Reuse cot bed mattress for 7mo; yay or nay?

Dc1 is moving out of the cot bed to make room for dc2 who is now 7mo.

Do I need to buy a new mattress? 7mo currently in a crib which was bought brand new, but is getting too big for it.

I know the advice for newborns is new child = new mattress, but don’t know if the same is said for older babies.

Technically yes, practically? No.

I would use it and have done so with my two because the mattress never went into a garage or loft or anything it was always in the bedroom as mine have an 18 month gap. I think the advice is more related to mound. Up to you though but I wasn't worried at all, especially as your younger one is 7 months now.

SleepingStandingUp · 26/08/2018 10:07

Theoretically older child could still be using it for a while yet so is say
Is it still firm?
Is it clean? No vomits on it etc?

If so it should be fine

dementedpixie · 26/08/2018 10:08

I reused dd's mattress for ds as it was waterproof and could be cleaned and had a removable washable cover.

stillnotTheDoctor · 26/08/2018 10:08

Er all three of mine used the same cot, same mattress. Wouldn't have occurred to me to change it.

DianaTheHuntress · 26/08/2018 10:26

Thanks all. It has a washable cover which I’ll put through as hot as the label says I can. It has always been in a warm, dry room with dc1 in it. Dc1 has never been very sicky (unlike dc2) and has never wet the bed. I don’t mind paying for another one, but it seems rather wasteful if it’s unnecessary...

I would reuse

MyDcAreMarvel · 26/08/2018 10:28

If a mattress has been stored it must always be changed. If you are just swapping one child for another it’s fine.

DianaTheHuntress · 26/08/2018 10:44

It can be common to use a second-hand mattress either from friends and family, or from your previous children. There is some research that found an increased chance of SIDS when using a second-hand mattress brought in from outside of the family home, although the link is not yet proven.

So I think the main concern is secondhand from outside the home..? Maybe like secondhand car seats, because you don’t know where it’s been stored etc.

Reuse. You know the condition and where it’s been stored.

stillnotTheDoctor · 26/08/2018 10:53

@MyDcAreMarvel why?!

MeyMary · 26/08/2018 10:54

I would reuse/simply swap the mattress.

Wash the cover and you should be good to go.

ProseccoPoppy · 26/08/2018 11:10

I bought new crib mattresses for each of mine because those were used for the newborn stage. I’d probably (in theory) have been ok using DC1’s cot bed mattress for DC2 assuming, like your DC, that DC2 was over 6 months (but in practice that doesn’t logistically work for us so have needed to buy a second).

LondonElle · 26/08/2018 11:16

10 years... 4 kids... same mattress... 🙈🙈🙈

BeauDeau · 26/08/2018 12:43

Mine all used the same mattress... and then it went on to be used by Dniece.

Reuse.

DuckPie · 26/08/2018 13:05

I used the same mattress for all of mine. I say this as someone who lost a child to SIDS. The pp above posted a link to the lullaby trust who advise against a second hand mattress from outside the home - I suspect due to not knowing how it was stored. If it is clean, dry and good condition there is no evidence to show it will cause any harm.
