Petty Neighbours

My neighbours are very much ‘tit for tat’ people, meaning if I have to make any sort of noise for whatever reason they will try and make a louder noise. Whatever I buy they have to do bigger and better etc.

This morning, whilst getting up at 6am for a conference call with business partners from a different parts of the world, I was greeted with loud classical music and their dog throwing toys against the wall. Baring in mind it’s a Sunday and I’m not sure who the hell thinks it’s okay to blast music at 6am regardless of what day it is but whateverConfused. I use my headphones while on call and I’m not a loud talker meaning they shouldn’t really be able to hear what I’m doing. The only thing they will have heard is me going down my old squeaky attic stairs (private rent, not my problem) and shutting the door.

Pressed enter too early! Was meant to finish with it’s not like I’m getting up and screeching at my partner or children as I don’t have any. It’s just me and no pets so as minimal as the noise can be. It’s not only rude but really off putting as I can hear their Beethoven over my conference callAngry

Can you ask them to turn it down?

flumpybear · 26/08/2018 07:55

That's why I live in detached - can't stand neighbours fucking up my home sanctuary Angry

BlueBug45 · 26/08/2018 07:56

They may actually be able to hear you talking quite clearly.

I suggest you go and speak to them about the noise first. Then make a note of when you have done so.

If you have no joy start logging when they play music before 7am and after 11pm. You can download noise disturbance sheets. Then report them.

Alternatively you can just move as you are renting.

purplewaters · 26/08/2018 07:56

They’re not approachable in the slightest, in fact the only time I’ve spoken to them is when they’ve whinged at me for noise. The funny thing was I had been in a different part of the country for the past year and the house had been empty so they must have been imagining itGrin I’ve complained to the council and enviromental health team by neither will take it seriously. They’ve said the anti social behaviour is for the police to deal with so just been compiling evidence ready to take forward to them. Their dog barks constantly, they have a child repellant device in their back garden on 24/7 meaning I’ve never used my garden as it’s uncomfortable. I’m slightly pleased I can still hear it at 35 I suppose! They’re the biggest hypocrites I’ve ever met. They make all the noise on the terrace yet sneer at everyone else for merely going about their daily lives. It’s crazy

Just waiting on a decent property to come on the market then I’m out of here! Still got at least 2-4 months of putting up with them though. I honestly fail to see how they would be able to hear me speak, I’m often being told I can’t be heard properly in my calls and I speak directly into a microphone so no loud phone voice. I can barely hear what they say when they shout at each other. The neighbours are 60+ years as well. I think what wakes them up is their stairs and door but I can’t not move around my own home at 6am? Most people are up and out the door for work at that time.

I’ve thought about soundproofing - for both our sakes but don’t want to damage the paint on the walls by sticking those foam squares up. Do you think they’ll do alright with those sticky bits that don’t leave a mark? Most need to be stuck up with industrial glue

My stairs* I don’t know what my phone’s up to today

Their dog can throw toys?

N0bodysM0t · 26/08/2018 08:11

What a child repellent device.
Im incompatible with my neighbours too. They are still ambling about at 1 am and their floors are si squeaky and im up at 6. Moving would be easier for them tho as they both work so 2 incomes.

BalloonSlayer · 26/08/2018 08:17

NobodysMOT you can get sonic devices that emit a sound that is uncomfortable for young people (whose ears can detect higher frequencies than older people). They are used to deter groups of teenage yobs from hanging around together in certain areas.

I would think it is more likely the neighbours have one designed to repel cats or foxes (sorry OP!) than young humans, unless the people the other side have teens. I'd have thought it would have upset their dogs.

N0bodysM0t · 26/08/2018 08:23

Wow. I have two teens but neighbours make so much noise letting their dogs in and out constantly. Their back door doesnt fit properly so when the close it they give it several good slams which reverberate around the house. I dont think they have any idea how loud i feeeeel this.

OP if it is a rented house id try and just live with it til u can move.

We have a similar problem with our neighbour the lady we are joined too is a total sweetheart but neighbour other side is bat shit crazy. She seems to think that our mere existence is offensive. She has slowly been escalating her shitty behaviour towards us since we bought the place last year. There been lots of silliness including calling the police because our builders were working on a Saturday morning! Lately everything has been very passive aggressive ie we jet washed our drive sweeping the water into our drain, some (clean) water seeped under the fence onto her drive, you would think someone had died the fuss she made! We went out for day came home to find our driveway soaking wet in some sort of weird retaliation (we don’t care it’s only water)

This week has been noise, DH finished work early and decided to clean his car inside, bat shit neighbour was not around, DH had radio on (low) in the garage while he worked. Bat shit comes home, opens door nearest our garage and turns her radio up as loud as she possibly can to drown ours out. DH ignored finished what he was doing and went inside, realised he’d forgotten something, popped out to get it and batshit has turned off music and closed the door!

I’m going to keep a diary of all her behaviour and have been looking into this a bit, apparently if their behaviour becomes oppressive ie you can’t feel comfortable in your own home then you can do something about it

Livinglavidal0ca · 26/08/2018 08:52

I read that as beeth oven

lynmilne65 · 26/08/2018 08:56

We're not all rich enough to afford detached madam

AnnieAnoniMoose · 26/08/2018 08:56

They’re indeed batshit. I can’t believe they’re in their 60’s and acting like a couple of stupid kids 🙄. MInd you, one of my neighbours is in his 60’s and is just as bad, but in a different way, Son shouldn’t be surprised I suppose. You just tend to think people should have ‘grown up’ by then.

Still, try to be positive, you’re renting, no kids....you can move as soon as something you like comes up without too much hassle. My neighbour and I both own ours, so I’m stuck with him for a good long while...😖😂 (though tbh, it could be much worse, so I’m ok with it).

underneaththeash · 26/08/2018 09:06

At least you didn't buy the place OP.

They sounds nuts...get out as soon as you can.

YeTalkShiteHen · 26/08/2018 09:10

I’m always a bit Confused by people who live in homes attached to other homes and expect perfect silence!

I’ve lived in flats, semi detached, terraced and now detached.

Our old neighbours were a really loud family, nice people like, just noisy. We got used to it!

You can’t have a house where you don’t hear anything at all unless you’ve got shit hot soundproofing or nobody attached to your house!

daisychain01 · 26/08/2018 09:36

purple it's a tricky one if you have to make business calls at home in that uncontrolled environment. I know how stressful it is, trying and failing to control background noise.

Are you able to schedule calls so you can be in the office when you need to run those meetings?
