Cats and baby?

NotSoThinLizzy · 25/08/2018 20:59

So baby still sleeps in our room as there's nowhere else for him to go yet (moving next month) cat likes to sleep on my bed. We normally kick the cat out of the bedroom when baby is in it but the cats have absolutely no interest in the baby so I'm just so wondering if I could leave the cat asleep in the room.

Baby is 11 months nearly 12

I was brought up with cats. I'm sure you won't have any problems.

Peachpebbles · 25/08/2018 21:02

Could you forgive yourself if the worst happened? I couldn't, so my cats stay out the room.

Wolfiefan · 25/08/2018 21:02

With a child nearly a year old I wouldn't worry too much. The only issue could be cat waking you all up!

LittleYellowLifejacket · 25/08/2018 21:07

I would just leave the cats be but I think I may be a bit more lax than most on here.

One of ours has taken to sleeping at 2yo dd's feet for the last few months since she moved into a bed. It's ridiculously cute.

TabbyMumz · 25/08/2018 21:09

Someone once told me cats like sleeping on babies faces. I don't know how true that is, but our cat can't come upstairs at night as a result.

mycatplotsdeath · 25/08/2018 21:10

Always had cats and I've never had a problem

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 25/08/2018 21:12

5 cats here when DS2 was born and not one of them showed a moue of interest in him til he could crawl (and then it was "fuuuuuck, run" in their eyes rather than "sleep on it, steal it's warmth").

I've never let the cats into the DCs bedrooms but we've always had one or two on the end of the bed and not had any issue.

Ta1kinpeace · 25/08/2018 21:14

I'd love to know where the total myth about cats smothering babies started
its hogwash

NotSoThinLizzy · 25/08/2018 21:18

I wouldn't trust my mum's cat as she's a face sleeper on adults 😂

I have a nearly 1 year old DS (sleeps in his own room now). Cats used to sleep on the bed when he was still in his Moses basket next to me. He was about 4 months and I woke up one night and the cat had got in the basket with him and was asleep on his feet. Literally just his feet thank god and said cat is just a big softie who wants to cuddle up to everyone. Never let them in again after that though

OutComeTheWolves · 25/08/2018 21:24

I was told that cats like the smell of milk on babies and have accidentally smothered babies because of this.

I've had 4 babies and haven't seen any evidence of this at all; although we do have a particularly anti-social cat. I wouldn't think twice about letting her sleep in the same room as the baby as long as the monitor was on.

Greekyoghurt83 · 25/08/2018 21:27

Ok so my dad used to berate me about cats and the danger of them sleeping on babies faces. However one day I left my daughter's buggy in the garden, she put her baby Annabel in it, I looked out later and the neighbour's cat had sat down in buggy right on top of the baby doll. I just wouldn't risk it even though it probably is very low risk.

ememem84 · 25/08/2018 21:35

I was worried about my catface when we bought ds Home. He’s 11 months now.

Catface showed interest in him. She sat in the same room as him. Slept under his Moses basket. Slept on the bed in our room with me (him in basket me in bed). She alerts me when he cries. She’s slept near him once. He had a cold/ear infection and I brought him onto our bed. Dh slept in his room as I was still on maternity leave.

She snuggled up on my feet with her paws on the end of his sleeping bag. It seemed to calm him.

Now he’s crawling like a maniac she’s even more wary of him.

At present I’m in bed. She’s cuddled up next to me. He’s asleep in his cot at the end of the bed.

BlueBug45 · 25/08/2018 21:36

I heard they were a risk to young babies.

And as I've had a friends' cat sleep on my face in the past when I was buried under the covers - the cat farted - I wouldn't risk it until the child was older.

CheshireChat · 25/08/2018 21:47

The only thing I'd be wary of is if you have a history of asthma in the family as then card really shouldn't be sleeping in the same room.

I wouldn't be worried with an 11 month old, but you could always put on those cover things on? Or a big scarf even.

Lonecatwithkitten · 25/08/2018 22:16

I think once the baby can roll the cat is at great risk than the baby. My beautiful moggy girl slept with DD every night from DD being 6 months old till the day she died when DD was 8years old. I am sure she watched over my baby for me.

NotSoThinLizzy · 25/08/2018 22:35

I think the cat net would be a greater threat than the cat when he stands up pull it off ect. The nhs says you can use a pill after 12 months so I'm thinking it'll be the same idea?
