To only cook on the hob?

emdude · 25/08/2018 20:28

Just moved into a new house and the kitchen is SKANKY!!!! We're having a builder round next week to quote for ripping it out and putting a new one in. However until then I don't really want to unpacked my stuff into it.

I've scrubbed the hob, it's now passable-ish. I have unpacked 2 saucepans, 4 plates and 4 bowls. I have a container with a wooden spoon, spatula and cutlery in.

I have 2 DCs (4&2) to cook for, my DH has zero cooking skills. I also have no fridge/freezer until Tuesday!!

Please hit me up with some ideas of what reasonably healthy things I can can feed us between now and then in the hope we don't contract scurvy...

Do you have a microwave?

Nottotheirstandards · 25/08/2018 20:31

Omelettes, stir fry, soup, spaghetti and meatballs, pasta, risotto, fry meat and spices and add to top of rice. You can broil, or fry chicken and meat. Get a pressure cooker or a slow cooker as well.

Just a few ideas

emdude · 25/08/2018 20:31

Yes! Forgot but the plate got lost in the move 🙄 replacing that tomorrow!

kettle?
if yes couscous is your friend.

Essexmummy88 · 25/08/2018 20:34

Jacket potatoes, pasta, chilli con carne, soup.. do you have a slow cooker?

SheldonSaysSo · 25/08/2018 20:34

Pasta - pesto, tomato, cream cheese, bolognese, etc.

Chicken breast fried with mash and veg

Stir fry

Beef stew

Jacket potatoes in microwave with beans, cheese, tuna

Beans or egg on toast

emdude · 25/08/2018 20:34

Yes have a kettle!! What to put in the couscous though. Normally I'd roast veg.

Also should've mentioned DH is veggie - the other 3 of us aren't but I tend eat veggie most of the time!

Jacket potatoes 👍🏼 why didn't I think of that!

Have a slow cooker but it's packed and not intending on unpacking it just yet. Not sure my pans are big enough for stew.

Thank you for all the ideas!!

With cous cous - Ratatouille. Fried halloumi. Sundried tomatoes. Olives. Griddled asparagus. Chickpeas.

Pasta pesto.
Rice.
Marinated fried tofu.
Mash pots and mushroom and white bean stroganoff.

I’m veggie and cook almost exclusively on the hob.

emdude · 25/08/2018 20:39

@IsTheRainEverComingBack Thanks, I'm writing a shopping list as we speak!

Daal. Curries. Lentil bolognese.

DrWhy · 25/08/2018 20:39

Lots of Asian food (many of the houses we looked at in Malaysia didn’t have an oven!). Stir fries, fried rice, steamed greens and veggies, pan fried fish, curries and rice even naan breads can be heated through in a dry frying pan.
Then loads of sauce based type things like bolognaise (inc veggie versions) and pasta sauces, tortillas, frittata, risotto - we rarely use the oven on week nights when we are in a hurry aside from the odd freezer meal.

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 25/08/2018 20:40

How Skanky is your new home for you to refuse to unpack 😱

You could do a stew. Soups.

bridgetreilly · 25/08/2018 20:44

I really would unpack the slow cooker. It's perfect for this situation!

catsofa · 25/08/2018 20:44

Pasta, pasta sauce and cheese

Stir fry

Fried halloumi, root veg mash and salad

Veggie Spag Bol

All sorts of curries and rice

Fajitas

Fried veggie sausages, mashed potatoes and gravy

Omelettes

Fritters

Mezze plate hummous, olives, sundried tomatoes, salad, pitta bread, stuffed vine leaves, strips of peppers, etc

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 25/08/2018 20:47

Loads of different pasta things. Creamy ones and tomatoey ones. Get the microwavable rice and straight to wok noodles and do lots of stir fries. Egg fried rice. Curries. Kedgeree! Hash type meals with leftover potatoes etc all fried up with eggs. Also stews with beans and sausages etc can be done on the hob. Fishcakes and stuff in breadcrumb can also be shallow fried. Also 'pizzas' - tortilla wraps with pizza toppings can be cooked in a dry frying pan (like enchiladas).

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 25/08/2018 20:50

I have salady things in cous cous - fêta olives cucumber red onion chopped pepper tomatoes etc.

prettygreywalls · 25/08/2018 20:51

I managed for a long time without a kitchen , used a double electric hob and a contact grill , you can cook loads with those

dentydown · 25/08/2018 20:51

You can fry chips in a pan! I got this off a mumsnetter who said she only fries chips, and my god! They were so divine!

All day breakfasts, pasta dishes, curries, stews. Also sandwiches. Just buy the small packs of filling so you can all have the same thing and use it up.

purplecorkheart · 25/08/2018 20:53

Take a look on the argos website. It is back to.college/university time. A few years ago I bought a desk top.oven for very little.

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 25/08/2018 20:54

Oh do you have a bbq you could dust off!?

Shoobydooby09 · 25/08/2018 20:54

I'd buy a big stock pot (My first one was about £20 from argos) to tide you over for next couple of weeks that way you can do lots of stews, casserole and soups. One nights evening meal could do DC lunch next day. I'd also unpack slow cooker it will also help.

Bourbonbiccies · 25/08/2018 20:57

Minestrone can be made quite substantial and in one big pan on the hob-
Fry-
Chopped bacon
Onion
Garlic
Add-
Small chopped potatoes
Carrot chopped small
Tinned toms
Tom puree
Water depending on how thin/thick you want it.
Season- with pepper, lea and perrins bay leaf
Simmer- for 10 or so mins.
Add- finely shredded Savoy cabbage and broken up spaghetti.
Serve with grated parmesan.

You can also make this in advance and reheat when ready.

My other tip is to get an acti-fry or similar. We used ours for cooking sausages/ chicken nuggets/chips when we were oven-less.

I was in a similar situation for months. Slow cooker was great, but you can get creative too.
Buy microwave mash potato and make a pie filling in a pan then pop the mash on top, works for fish pie, veggie pie, cottage pie etc.
Spag bol is a hob based dinner.
We ate a lot of stir fries, things like bangers and mash again using micro mash for convenience, plus things like chicken chausseur/beef stroganoff in the slow cooker. Cooked whole chickens in the slow cooker.
Lots of shop bought soups, prepped veg, etc.
You can even cook jacket potatoes in the slow cooker!!!

(Sorry this doesn't help with veggies but I'm sure you get the gist!)

Loyaultemelie · 25/08/2018 21:05

Fried halloumi with kale and mushrooms and new potatoes
Stirfry
Macaroni cheese with crispy cauliflower topping
Scrambled eggs, mushrooms and halloumi on soda bread (I know these are a NI thing but co-op in lincs and yorks sell them so I suspect elsewhere too)
Pasta with broccoli and mushrooms in a creamy sauce
Mushroom stroganoff
