Caterpillar in broccoli

I found a green caterpillar in my broccoli a couple of days ago and put the beautiful little cabbage white in a jar with some cabbage leaves. It's now turning into a crysalys!

I always thoroughly wash and inspect my veggies because you know... they grow out of the ground and bugs and critters are noticed by them. If my veg has the odd critter, I see it as a sign that the veg are grown without pesticides.

Am I being unreasonable to find this acceptable and should people suck it up if they want vegetables not filled with vile chemicals?

Picture of critter for attention

Ah lovely post! I thought it was going to be a post moaning about finding a critter in your veg Smile

I agree with you.. but I'm still never keen to see slugs in my cabbage.

I found a caterpillar in my blueberries at work. I released him on to the plant on my desks

When I was a child all fruit, veg and salad had to be scrutinised for wildlife.

Many a lettuce leaf made it on to the plate with caterpillar still in residence.

I had that once, but sadly he'd been steamed for 15 minutes and it was too late to save him.

Dogmatix34 · 25/08/2018 10:03

Unfortunately I found a dead caterpillar in my broccoli as I’d already steamed the veg. He had turned completely white. Is that possible through the heat? I felt bad for it as I love 🐛

Slugs are unwelcome but at the same time, I don't begrudge the slug for finding food.
I grew up on the allotment and my mum also always used proper green grocers. Locally sourced food, straight out the ground. It's our job to thoroughly check and wash veggies. I dunno, I prefer my food to be "natural" in shape. Soil on means they're fresh. The odd critter is not an issue for me.

I once cooked some cauliflower, ate it, and then found a boiled caterpillar in the veg water. I felt very sick.
Poor little fella though.

Lindy2 · 25/08/2018 10:13

It's all part of nature. Insects and bugs live on plants.
I'd say you had a nice piece of brocolli with a healthy catterpillar on it.
Be warned though we had some cabbage whites at the end of last summer and put them in a jar where they turned into crysalysts and then promptly went into hibernation until Spring. We had them until April/May this year when they finally became butterflies. They were practically part of the family by then 😂.

I got a deep fried wasp in with my fish and chips once.

Mammyofasuperbaby · 25/08/2018 10:19

I had this the other day. I found one caterpillar in the broccoli and released it into the garden, checked the rest and then roasted the veg. Found a small one on my plate while I was eating. I still feel bad for it, such a horrible way to die.
It was put in the garden so it won't go to waste

Knittedfairies · 25/08/2018 10:29

@Boofay - it would have been worse to find half a caterpillar!
Nice post OP; I was expecting a complaint that vegetables are grown outside, in the open air...

“Caterpillar in broccoli”

Sounds like a survivalist recipe Grin
