To have no idea what to do with all the stuff that comes back from nursery

I mean all the artwork etc. Feel like I'm drowning in it. What do people do with it? I feel bad to chuck it straight in the bin but it's not sustainable to keep it all.

My two both have Big see through boxes (several!) for all their special ‘stuff’ and this includes some artwork-always keep the Christmas/Easter/mother’s day Stuff (and try to remember to date it on the back!) and I keep a few special bits- the rest is binned.

cardibach · 24/08/2018 19:38

I think it’s traditional to store it in the attic/wardrobe/other space until the child is in their 20s then bin the lot.

Urubu · 24/08/2018 19:46

I keep it for 2-3 month in a pile then go through it with the DC to identify the ones they really like, these it keep in the pile the others are binned.
I like the photo book idea!

OutPinked · 24/08/2018 20:01

I’ve had to bin lots of it. We are moving house so I’ve had to let go of lots of things I was clinging onto. It made me sad but they hadn’t been touched for years and I know they never would be, they were just sitting in a cupboard somewhere!

giveitfive · 24/08/2018 21:16

My kid is about to leave home and we have finally agreed that it's time to get rid of the lovingly constructed castle with bog roll turrets, lollipop stick drawbridge, moat with glitter glue squirted to look more realistic and match stick architecture inside...

It was a work of fucking art... and took so long to help him build it that no one had the heart to chuck it.

As a result it has sat on top of the piano gathering dust for 10 buggering years.

Be ruthless. I like the suggestions to take photos....

twoundertwo54321 · 24/08/2018 21:17

Bin. Keep one or two every now and then.

Parker231 · 24/08/2018 21:21

DT’s are now at Uni but we have two big trunks in the basement with all their school stuff from art work, reports, sports and music trophies, school projects, school uniform - no idea what to do with it!

whatwouldkeithRichardsdo2 · 24/08/2018 21:22

Save some. Display some. Rotate it. Bin a lot of it. 🤫

cathcath2 · 24/08/2018 21:33

Hahaha, just bin it (take photos of it if you like it). Why do you think nursery send it home - because they would just have to bin it otherwise!

Stompythedinosaur · 24/08/2018 22:14

Good art initially goes in our display gallery (a string with pegs on in the living room). Less special stuff is hidden for a bit in case the kids ask for it then recycled.

After a bit I sift the art in the gallery and the most and most noticeable bits get the child's name and age written on the back and then into a section of a really useful box I have for each child where there is a section for each school year (and other sections for school books, reports, photos and certificates).

A4 folder with clear plastic pockets for best ones. Frame a couple for their room or playroom. Bin rest. (not into covered fridge door look)

Xmasbaby11 · 24/08/2018 22:22

Dd are 4 and 6. I seriously bin about 50 pictures a week between them. And about a carrier bag of creations.

Some for wall, fridge, photographing etc. But mostly straight to recycling.

redshoeblueshoe · 24/08/2018 22:25

Photo - bin

User2284995711 · 24/08/2018 22:44

We have a big black box in the garden where we store most of this stuff! Handily, once a week some nice men come and take the box away to store the artwork elsewhere making room for more! The kind men give us back an empty box to fill with more great creations :)

(We do frame the good stuff, or photograph some bits before the black box storage if we can/have time/etc...)

kaytee87 · 24/08/2018 22:45

Save some and give some to grandparents?

redshoeblueshoe · 24/08/2018 22:58

Kaytee as a grandparent that is a good idea, but still -photo then bin

LaurieMarlow · 24/08/2018 23:06

Our nursery loves a bit of craft. We get tonnes.

First DS hosts a mini exhibition to talk through the latest batch. Lots of cooing is expected.

The best examples are displayed proudly on the fridge/playroom. Granny is allowed to take her favourite pieces. The rest is quietly binned.

Eventually the stuff on the wall/fridge is moved up to the big box in the attic to make way for more masterpieces.

I'm not sure what happens when the big box in the attic gets filled.

Derpy84 · 27/08/2018 21:45

I take photos of the work and put the pics in a file on the computer so i can look back on her progress and enjoy the kids work without having piles of it everywhere. Really good pictures (where i can tell what it actually is) go on the fridge or in the memory box but the majority goes in the bin after photographing it.

parkermoppy · 27/08/2018 22:03

a friend of mine scans them all, and then puts together a photo book at the end of each year. Bins most of them but keeps the odd one

bridgetreilly · 27/08/2018 22:13

Operate a strict one-in, one-out regime. Every new thing that comes goes up on the fridge or wherever, only for as long as it takes to be replaced by the next thing. When it comes down it can go in the bin/recycling unless it's a particularly special thing in which case it goes in a storage box under the bed. But most things go in the bin.

BlackberryandNettle · 28/08/2018 08:37

Go through the pile, pick the best things to display (fridge/stick to cupboards if your kitchen is old like ours/noticeboard) recycle the rest. Rotate every now and then when more comes home. Almost everything is eventually binned, barring the one or two very sweetest/best/landmark first writing/drawing which I file. Although having read this could photograph Shock!! Good idea but I'm never organised enough to actually make a photo book!!

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 28/08/2018 08:51

When they were little dh took junk modelling 'to the office' shredder

Topseyt · 28/08/2018 14:06

Bin it. Put up a few strategic bits to display. Bin the rest. Seriousl, or you will be buried under it.

DailyMailFail101 · 28/08/2018 14:13

Put it on the fridge and then bin it after a week or so but keep anything amazing!

Maryann1975 · 28/08/2018 14:18

I’m a childminder and the children I look after go home with so many pictures/paintings that they would have to extend their homes to keep them all. I honestly don’t judge at all if I find out they’ve chucked them. It’s the process of creating that’s important, not the finished product. Obviously don’t tell the child you are chucking them and do keep a couple of bits every now and again, but no need to keep them all. There will be hundreds over their childhoods!
