I follow a friend of a friend online they are a gay couple (both men) . He just put a picture of an adorable newborn with the caption on august the 22nd my boyfriend gave birth to .... blah blah

what does that mean ? That they had a surrogate and his boyfriend is the father ? Is the the "politically correct" way to announce it ?
I find it very dissrespectful

They sound confused, entitled and deluded. Poor kid. Will the baby have any contact with its mother?

Would you say that if a straight couple adopted a baby from a surrogate.. Hmm These threads always bring out the closet homophobes...

RosiePosies · 24/08/2018 15:27

As above PP said, who cares. Maybe it's a joke only their actual friends would get.

Also maybe stop judging people you don't know on social media and go outside.

Sparklesocks · 24/08/2018 15:29

It sounds like a tongue in cheek remark he maybe didn't think through.

confusedimmigrant · 24/08/2018 15:30

Lol of course someone would scream homophobes !

I'm far from being a homophobe but it's definitely weird to say that your male partner gave birth 😆

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 24/08/2018 15:34

I took it as tongue on cheek. Dads often post birth announcements saying their partners gave birth to x at y time, it was just mimicking that. He clearly wasn't trying to imply his boyfriend actually gave birth

Yes, that.

The disrespectful bit was getting a woman to make a human for him.

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 24/08/2018 15:36

Yes, literally that gets said on all surrogate thread most of which are about heterosexual couples.

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 24/08/2018 15:36

That's because a lot of people have real issues with women being seen as rent a wombs.

Sparklesocks · 24/08/2018 15:40

Just playing devil's advocate here but my sister had chemo when she was little and the doctors say there's a slim chance she won't be able to carry a baby. She's a bit too young to start trying yet but if that were the case, and I, or one of her friends, offered to be a surrogate, would that make me a rent a womb?

BlueBug45 · 24/08/2018 15:41

@IDontEatFriedTurtle if the women didn't want to do it then they wouldn't.

Nesssie · 24/08/2018 15:44

According to mumsnet all surrogates are only in it for the money, it is demeaning to the woman, and the child will suffer.

PurpleDaisies · 24/08/2018 15:45

if the women didn't want to do it then they wouldn't.

You don’t have to look very far to find out that that certainly isn’t always the case.

I'm not a closet homophobe thank you but I do stop to think about the child. The baby has a mother.

It's concerning hearing two parents with penises declaring they 'gave birth'!? Wtf.

I just wonder 20 years down the line how these surrogate children process all this.

upsideup · 24/08/2018 15:50

How many threads have we had in the last few weeks bashing surrogacy and gay parents?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 24/08/2018 15:52

Would you say that if a straight couple adopted a baby from a surrogate

Yes.

JazzAndCat · 24/08/2018 15:54

I don’t think it’s disrespectful. I think it’s lovely that they are excited about their new baby and sharing their excitement with family and friends. The ‘giving birth’ bit is ott but I don’t find it offensive. Good luck to them.

Nesssie · 24/08/2018 16:06

The baby has a mother. not everyone grows up with a mum. Two dads will do just fine, as do single dads.

Nowadays families are completed mixed and matched and having 2 female parents or 2 male parents isn't the taboo it use to be.

angelolsen · 24/08/2018 16:09

It sounds like a joke.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 24/08/2018 16:10

Im in a whatsapp group & one of my friends has declared we're between 12 to 14 weeks now
So both you AND your husband are carrying the baby Hmm
Call me a pedant but i cant bear that phrase, irrelevant of sexuality.

BewareOfDragons · 24/08/2018 16:11

OH FFS. You know what he meant. He's probably very, very excited about become a dad with his partner.

And they are going to be parents. So if they're truly your friends and you love them, wish them the best and congratulate them on their new family member.

If you can't do that, de-friend them. No one needs judgemental jerks in their lives.

confusedimmigrant · 24/08/2018 16:12

Ok i didnt mean this to be a debate on surrogacy . I am sure the woman wanted to do it and was not forced .
I was just curious if this is a new "phrase" used now

BewareOfDragons

I agree

Smallhorse · 24/08/2018 16:23

I suspect it's a modern day extension of the dreadful " we're pregnant "

ReanimatedSGB · 24/08/2018 16:29

Congratulations OP. How very righteous of you not to let a little thing like this being absolutely none of your business prevent you from sounding the anti-gay/anti-trans klaxons. Now they can all come bellowing onto the thread, shitting themselves with rage as usual...
