Builders asking to move car

PPPMA · 24/08/2018 10:42

We have some builders next door who are doing some work on the neighbours house. They've just knocked and told me I need to move my partners car which is parked outside our house. My partner is not in and I haven't driven a manual car since my driving lessons (I drive an automatic). I don't feel comfortable even moving it and can't remember what I'm doing. WIBU to say I'm not moving it and they should have let us know beforehand? If I wasn't in they wouldn't have had a choice in the matter. Or should I ask one of them to move it for me even though none of us are insured and it's not their car to drive?

I'm nearly 30 weeks pregnant and do not trust myself driving a manual car even if it is just across the road...

@hellsbellsmelons I can't watch them drive two streets away though. I wouldn't even know where they'd parked it. He's also absolutely filthy and covered in silicone!

They just want the spot to park their van 😂😂

Lauren83 · 24/08/2018 12:06

I would let them move it if it's not far

Rm2018 · 24/08/2018 12:14

Not to be rude but it is a no brainer...No one is insured to drive the car so it us illegal to do so therefore no one moves it. All those saying do so for neighbour would they really willingly break the law????

MuddlingMackem · 24/08/2018 12:14

@ohreallyohreallyoh

You will piss off your neighbours if it means the builders can’t carry on with their work today.

So what? This is not the OP's problem.

Exactly. Her neighbours don't seem to have any concerns about pissing off OP, if they did they would have warned in advance or gone over themselves and asked nicely if the car could be moved.

OP. Just tell them the car can't be moved and if they can't wait or protect the car adequately then your DH will be making a claim on their insurance. And if they have a van with a business name and number take a photo of it or at least make a note of the details.

Reaa · 24/08/2018 12:17

I can't find the keys, DH must have them with him, can't get hold of him until tonight

Makemineboozefree · 24/08/2018 12:19

I wouldn't let the builder move it to two streets away while he's already covered in silicone! Can't they throw a tarpaulin over it?

PPPMA · 24/08/2018 12:20

I've told them the truth. I'm not driving it and nor are they. They need to give notice and I'm not at liberty to allow them to drive DPs car 2 streets away with no insurance. They're covered in silicone and blue paint and I don't want the inside of the car ruined. Told them to give us a list of dates they need the car moved and we will try and find somewhere else to park it.

All sorted.

Thanks!

They have to pay if they damage your car. I wouldnt give someone the keys whos not insured and you cant drive it. Explain this and ask them to cover your car. Hope you feel better soon x

bingbongnoise · 24/08/2018 12:29

Glad it's sorted now. Smile

AnneWiddecombesHandbag · 24/08/2018 12:36

I've had lots of random people move DH car when having stuff done as I can't drive! They generally don't mind. I've only had an issue once and I just asked my neighbour to move I instead!

I think it's only a small thing and although you're feeling shit and they should have given notice it's not the end of the world. You never know, when your baby is born you might need a favour from your neighbour!

PPPMA · 24/08/2018 12:39

@AnneWiddecombesHandbag I've already said no to them moving it. It would have to go two streets away. They're covered in filth. They're not insured. They're not doing work for me. It's not my car, it's DPs. If neighbour won't do me a favour down the line because of this then so be it!

hellsbellsmelons · 24/08/2018 12:39

I thought they just wanted it moved back a bit.
2 streets away is not OK.
You've sorted it for now so well done.

PPPMA · 24/08/2018 12:39

Sorry. I should've added in my post that we don't have on street parking!

I've had the same issue before. Dh has 2 cars - one wouldn't start at the time and he had the keys to the other one (parked behind it) with him and was at work.

Next door had a sky engineer round to put up a dish and they wanted me to move both cars so they could put a ladder up on our drive.

They were most put out when I couldn't move either of the cars off my own drive. This was not well received.

If they had not been so entitled in feeling that they could use my drive for access on a whim and given us a bit of notice we would definitely have been more sympathetic.

They've just knocked and told me I need to move my partners car which is parked outside our house

You don't need to move your car. If they damage it, they pay for it! Their choice...
