To firmly resist dh's plan to carry all the camping equipment on the three day hike he has planned for the BH?

Dh has planned an adventure for this weekend. He wants the family to walk a three day 34 mile trail, camping for the two nights, carrying all the stuff. Dh is strong and fit. Dd1 (14) has just done bronze Dof E so she is up to the task. Dd2 (13) is used to doing long walks but hasn’t done a two or three dayer carrying her stuff. The dog (8) will be fine. I am reasonably strong and fit, I walked for seven hours last BH but I've got a dodgy back, a dicky hip and two crunchy knees.

I can do this walk but I'm not sure I can do it carrying a back pack of stuff.

I just packed my rucksack with the two man tent, a sleeping bag and roll mat, put it on and thought FUCK THIS IS HEAVY.
I’ve got to threedays of approx six hour walks carrying it, holding the dog and I haven’t added water, pants, snacks and deodorant in there.

Do you think it would be unreasonable of me to insist that we transport the camping stuff by car (ie use two cars and there and back drop of thing in the morning)?

If he doesn't want to do your suggestion I'd wave them off and have a lovely weekend at home.

ohhelloitsyou · 24/08/2018 09:50

I would talk to your husband and say this doesn’t sound enjoyable to you plus you have several health concerns for yourself. Also 8 is getting on a bit in dog years depending on breed I’d be careful of the dogs hips and legs too. When was the last time he had an mot at the vets? I’d do that before you go

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 24/08/2018 09:52

Youth hostels on the route?

Still get to do the walk but your hip won’t complain.

ScribblyGum · 24/08/2018 09:52

Dog had mot last month and is fighting fit. She'll be fine. I'm more worried about being a miserable moaning grouch for the whole walk because my bag is heavy.

Sounds like a lovely bonding exercise for your dh and kids.

I'd be home with wine, books and boxsets.

ScribblyGum · 24/08/2018 09:54

Campsite’s are booked and I'm fine with the sleeping on the ground camping aspect.

It’s the bag. The damned bag.

Why are you carrying the tent??? His idea, he's strong and fit, he carries the tent.

MrsMoastyToasty · 24/08/2018 09:54

The weather report for Sunday is very wet.....just saying.....

ScribblyGum · 24/08/2018 09:56

I want to do the walk. I like walking. I like camping. I like pub lunches and dinners.

I do not like the heavy bag of doom and misery.

God it was so heavy, or maybe it was not so heavy and I am an absolute colossal drip. Will it get lighter the longer I carry it? Snort. Don’t answer that.

depending on where you are going you can get sherpa vans to take your stuff to where you are staying overnight. We live on a major walking route and see them in the village all the time.

ScribblyGum · 24/08/2018 09:57

We have to take two tents.

A two man for the dds and a three man for dh, the dog and me.

DrWhy · 24/08/2018 10:00

Give the two man tent to the 14 year old DD, she’ll have to carry her own for DoE?

listsandbudgets · 24/08/2018 10:00

If you are taking the tent which presumably ypu will share with your DH then what is he taking?

ScribblyGum · 24/08/2018 10:01

OMG, I’ve just seen the forecast for Sunday 😱 bloody bloody hell

I'll google sherpa vans thanks Scowry.

Yes the forecast is terrible.
I would not go :)

ScribblyGum · 24/08/2018 10:04

I was going to give dd1 the poles and pegs for the 2 man, sleeping bag, mat, snacks and water + sundries.

Dd2 has got sleeping bag, mat, dog food, haribo and er sundries (only has a day pack)

Tbh I haven’t got to their packs yet. I got to my pack, was defeated by weight, slid to the floor and came on MN seeking a way out Grin

What's the forecast?
Sounds like a nightmare.
I only like my caravan, with its big double bed and wine fridge, in good weather!!

Nanny0gg · 24/08/2018 10:10

It's going to pour.

Seriously, where is the pleasure in any of that?

Juells · 24/08/2018 10:12

Nightmare. I'd stay at home.

tinytemper66 · 24/08/2018 10:12

Sod that!!

ScribblyGum · 24/08/2018 10:14

The pleasure apparently Nanny0gg (cool username btw) is in the completion of the adventure and the great sense of achievement we will all feel when it is over, or something.

Walking is good though. I like walking, just not so much in the rain bent over by a hateful bag of despondency.

ScribblyGum · 24/08/2018 10:16

I've sent him a text about the weather. I'm going to ease him into the idea of making some adjustments to the plan.

Walking is fun. It's even more fun when you return to your camper van that's dry and warm, parked on a lovely site with toilets and showers.

ScribblyGum · 24/08/2018 10:18

Not helpful LeftRightCentre. Really not helpful AT ALL.

MrsMoastyToasty · 24/08/2018 10:18

Nah, don't do it. Wet kit will be heavier than dry kit. If you really want to get wet then book into a hotel with a spa.
