to be over the moon with my son's average GCSE results?!

I am walking on air today! My son who is a sportsman, plays in an elite football squad and has a calm and wise character (also very handsome) has achieved Grade 5 across the board.

I feel so happy for him and he is grinning from ear to ear that he won't have to resit any. I was a high achiever at school and expected my children to be the same but over the years my attitudes have changed.

A huge well done to those academic ones, I loved studying. But a massive massive well done to those who achieved a scattering of passes or overcame obstacles to get a few good grades.

Well done to him!

My ds will be sitting his next year, I’d be over the moon with that.

Jeanclaudejackety · 23/08/2018 18:34

Wow good for him! Its not easy being at a very high level in a sport and also being super duper academic. Of course it comes easily to some but to get decent grades when it takes a bit of work on top of that intense level of physical exertion is incredible!! Is he pursuing football as a career?

buttybuttybutthole · 23/08/2018 18:39

I don't have expectations that he will eventually be a footballer but who knows and he has managed to get a place studying sports science and the solid grades mean he has so many more options for the future. He worked really hard to get the grades and never compared himself to the grade 8/9 students because he wasn't in their classes.

It would be nice to see on press releases the stories of the ordinary students. When I gave birth 16 years ago I assumed he would be a grade A student and never though we would be so happy about average grades!

YANBU at all, that's a huge achievement! Grin

And have these Flowers for being proud of him.

HettieBettie · 23/08/2018 18:42

Well done to him! I’m like you - never found it hard to get all a’s and thought my child would be the same. We’ve got a little while to go until GCSEs but I hope I have your attitude! X

DoYouLikeHueyLewisandTheNews · 23/08/2018 18:44

YANBU, what a lovely post. Congratulations to your son.

Honeyroar · 23/08/2018 18:44

Well done to him.

How do the numbers work? My friends have been posting grades all afternoon and I don't know what they mean.

buttybuttybutthole · 23/08/2018 18:45

Thanks. We have both been grinning from ear to ear all day!

A 5 is a good pass. so basically a C/B. A 4 is a pass. A 9 is an A*. 8 is an A, & a lower A, 6 is B plus etc. There are tables online.

In old money my son has 10 good passes C plus or B minus, whichever way you look at it!

Ditto op. My daughter is very proud of herself, as am I.
Well done to your son!

honeysucklejasmine · 23/08/2018 18:51

Well done! As a teacher, I always celebrate those who worked their socks off, no matter what grade they got in the end. It's a shame the local press etc only seem to care about the top achievers.

pointythings · 23/08/2018 18:54

YANBU to be proud, that is a massive achievement and a great reward for all that hard work. Hard work counts for loads and a lot of people don't realise it because they sail through GCSEs relatively easily. Then come A levels, and they hit the rocks. This has happened to quite a few of DD1's peers at the end of Yr 12. Having that great work ethic will set your DS up for life, whatever he wants to do with it. Brilliant stuff. Flowers

cardibach · 23/08/2018 19:00

Can I just correct the grade equivalences posted by butty?
9 is A*, the very top few. 8 is the rest of A, 7is A. She’s right about the rest as far as they can be matched.
All 5s is excellent. Well done your DS OP.

MyDcAreMarvel · 23/08/2018 19:00

It’s actually a 9 is an A* 8 an A and 7 an A.

MyDcAreMarvel · 23/08/2018 19:00

Congratulations to your son. These exams can be very stressful indeed.

We're celebrating DDs results today too.

RomanyRoots · 23/08/2018 19:14

Huge congratulations, it's good to see that he is consistent, this counts for a lot.
He worked hard and you have every reason to be proud, bless him Thanks

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 23/08/2018 19:15

YANBU - many congratulations to your boy!

NeverRed · 23/08/2018 19:16

This may help

to be over the moon with my son's average GCSE results?!
AmyRhodes · 23/08/2018 19:20

9 = A*
8 = A* *
7 = A
6 = B
5 = high C
4 = low C
3 = D
2 = E
1 = F
U

Well done to your son! Opportunity to specialise in whatever he wants at this point 🎉🎉🎉

AmyRhodes · 23/08/2018 19:21

That post should say:

9 = A double star
8 = A star
7= A

Phone auto corrects the stars!

Frenchmom · 23/08/2018 19:22

Congratulations to him.
