To want a tumble dryer in the bedroom?

We have a utility room with a (pointless) sink which means there’s only room for a washer dryer. It’s rubbish. Eventually I want to redo the whole thing and put a washing machine and tumble dryer in there.

The dryer bit of the washer dryer isn’t working. I’ve had a quote of £90 to come and have a look, that’s without any parts.

I think it would be better to get a tumble dryer now, a heat pump one, for £330, and have it in the bedroom for now. There’s space, and it’s a black one so will blend in with the dark bedroom furniture.

DH has said a flat no. He wants to spend less and fix the W/d. I’ve explained that even fixed it’s still shit, it only dries half a load and takes two hours so a one load of washing and drying takes the whole day. We have a constant backlog.

He also thinks the bedroom is a weird place to have it. I think it’s ideal as I can fold and put away straight from the dryer.

I am the only person in the house who does laundry.

WIBU to just order one? The idea being when the W/d inevitably packs up completely I can replace with a washer and then when funds allow rejig the utility.

V quick sketch but could you arrange utility room something like this? I would put a pull out shelf between washer & dryer as you will need more room for folding clothes etc.

That would definitely work!

I’m going to get someone out to quote. Just to see, like.

Deffo not in the bedroom. They're a big cause of fires.

Foslady · 23/08/2018 13:10

Are you attached to another house? We had a neighbour who did this and woke us up every morning at 6 drying that says clothes....

Foslady · 23/08/2018 13:10

Days

gamerchick · 23/08/2018 13:16

I have mine in the bedroom, we just vent it out the window. However they are a fire hazard so I can't leave it unattended and go downstairs. I clean the upstairs while it's on. It's not convenient having it upstairs.

Bellyscreen · 23/08/2018 13:18

You’ve got a music room? Put it in there, not your bedroom.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 23/08/2018 14:14

Detached house so no worries there.

I think I may have solved it. I’ve just rearranged the back room and moved DH’s crosstrainer to in front of the window so there is a perfect space for it. It’s out of the way, the crosstrainer is already a bloody eyesore so he can’t complain about that and it’s off the kitchen so I don’t have to traipse through the house with wet laundry.

Now I just have to convince him I need one. .

Washer dryers never work as well as proper dryers. My dryer can do a huge load in 40 minutes and never shrinks anything and has lasted 11 years so far without any problems.

headinhands · 23/08/2018 14:47

My tumblr drier is in my bedroom. It's great!

CrackersDontMatter · 23/08/2018 14:52

My tumble dryer is in the bedroom. Not the best of places but it’s the only space really. It’s a condenser so no vent or damp. I don’t understand about not going downstairs when it’s on. If it was in the kitchen would you not go upstairs until your stuff was dry?

No different than putting it on in the kitchen and then going to watch TV. There’s a smoke detector in the bedroom.

KickAssAngel · 23/08/2018 14:59

How much pipework is under the sink? Would you need to get some of it moved to fit in a dryer?

We have a washing machine & dryer and don't have a work surface above them - they are the surface. You need to be able to get down the back so don't put anything across the top of them.

OliveMin · 23/08/2018 15:01

Get a condenser tumble dryer so no need for a vent. I would place it in bedroom.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 23/08/2018 16:02

Loads of pipes under the sink, I just about get a bag of washing tablets and some animal food under there. So the whole thing needs ripping out eventually.

I’ve ordered the dryer now to come tomorrow, and it’s going to live in the back room at first. I still think I’d quite like to put it up in the bedroom but we’ll see.

Have you got a smoke detector in the room? I used to have a tumble dryer in the shed, went out one day and put some washing in to dry, switched it on, walked away and thought nothing of it, 10 mins later went back to get something from the freezer to find the dryer alight.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 23/08/2018 16:12

Oh blimey! Yep, new build house so smoke detectors in almost every room.

I think the best place for a washing machine and a tumble drier is in the bathroom - it's where we take off our clothes anyway!

gamerchick · 23/08/2018 19:38

How big is your bathroom like? Mine couldn't fit 2 hulking great machines in Confused

gamerchick · 23/08/2018 19:39

I don’t understand about not going downstairs when it’s on. If it was in the kitchen would you not go upstairs until your stuff was dry?

That's right. Those buggers need to be supervised.

Carboholic · 23/08/2018 19:46

I'd do it. Washer/drier combo is terrible.

Your bedroom will be nice and warm!!

missymayhemsmum · 23/08/2018 21:17

If you get a condenser dryer you have to empty the water every load or two. I don't think I could do that in the bedroom without leaving a soggy trail.

LemonysSnicket · 23/08/2018 22:03

If you're the only person who does laundry then I do t see why he gets to veto?

Lethaldrizzle · 23/08/2018 22:06

Never had a tumble drier in my life. I thought they were really bad for the environment

Rebecca36 · 23/08/2018 22:29

Can you not have a drier that goes on top of the washing machine?
Seems odd to have one in bedroom.

Apart from using electricity (which you may get from renewable sources potentially) what’s so bad?
