Aibu to ask how much water you drink?

I suspect I'm a bit dehydrated as I don't drink much more than 3 mugs of water per day. Downloaded an app to track my water intake and it recommends 2.25 litres per day. I struggle to drink 1 litre. I tried yesterday and had to stop 5 times whilst out and about to use the loo. So how does anyone drink 2.25 litres?! I'm sure I get a lot of liquid from fruit and veg, so maybe I don't think I need to drink anywhere near 2.25 litres. I'd be permanently on the loo!

Lots, but I consider myself a modern day Jesus, instead of water I magically convert mine to Wine.

Tiredmummy06 · 23/08/2018 13:44

none. just drink tea throughout the day. if I feel thirsty I'll have a drink of water but I don't and have never set myself a target for drinking water. there is no scientific evidence that drinking extra water has any health benefits. tea, coffee, fruits and vegetables all contribute to your water intake

BrazenFox · 23/08/2018 13:46

Game0fScones same here I guess. I just drink when I fancy a cup of tea or when I actually feel thirsty. However, reading up on it I saw that feeling thirsty means you are already dehydrated. Hmm. I look at my wilting plants when I forget to water them and wonder at what point I'm actually wilting!

You're right, you aren't supposed to wait until you are thirsty to have a drink. I carry a bottle of water with me everywhere, and have a bottle for my bedtime too. You don't have to have a big drink at a time, I tend to just have regular mouthfulls throughout the day and it soon adds up. Doesn't feel like drinking much either if you are just having regular little bits. I always check the colour of my urine as well as it is a good indicator of how well hydrated you are. The darker it is, the more dehydrated you are

I'm a kidney stone maker possibly (probably) due to being a lifelong drinker of not enough fluids every day. I've only recently had proper advice on this. My first surgeon told me that I (everyone) should be aiming at 2 litres a day - mostly watery fluids, not so much tea and coffee. I then came under the care of a surgeon who specialises in kidney stone patients and got a lot better advice, the principal piece of advice being that 2 litres is not enough and I must drink 3 litres a day. It took some getting used to (I don't like water much!) but adding a squish of Robinson's (or other) fruit concentrate to each glass has made it much easier. I have become expert at knowing how much each mug/glass can hold and so can estimate how much I'm drinking. I can also guzzle down a 400 ml glass of liquid quite quickly now. I actually feel better in myself (more awake and alert) now I'm drinking more and at my last check up I had the all clear on the stone front.

As someone else has said, I was told by first surgeon that urine colour is all - his phrase was "Lemonade, not Lucozade" as regards colour.

I thought that that 2 litres of water thing was a myth and that it included water contained in food? So you don't have to actually drink 2 litres a day.

Anyway, I usually have a cup of hot water with lemon in the morning, maybe a pint of water during the day at work, and a couple of cups of herbal tea in the evening. Plus a couple of coffees during the morning. That seems to suit me fine! If I exercise, I'll drink more, especially in the warm weather and I'll make an effort to drink more water before I exercise as I feel better if I do.

I thought this too...and I eat a lot of fruit and veg, so never felt there was a problem.

People at work are constantly guzzling water out of chilly bottles and they're constantly in the loo. It's bloody annoying on both counts.

Peoplemaynoticeus · 23/08/2018 16:05

Ooh I'm tempted to buy a chilly bottle

shumway · 23/08/2018 16:08

I drink too much water. People comment on it.

wink1970 · 23/08/2018 16:18

;-) me too. Actually, like a PP, I make a point of drinking about 6-8 pints a day to make up for my wine consumption. My liver is surprisingly good.

Plus, it stops you overeating.

Sandstormbrewing · 23/08/2018 20:58

Pre-pregnancy it was about 6-8 pints (I drink from a pint glass) but now I'm pregnant I'm lucky if I manage 4 as it makes me feel sick!

Game0fScones · 23/08/2018 20:59

And same but more recent: www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/health-nutrition/water-myth

Camomila · 23/08/2018 21:03

At least 2l but probably more
Not just water, also diluted OJ, coffee and decaff tea.

I'm always thirsty (deviated septum so can't breathe through my nose)

Jaimx86 · 23/08/2018 21:03

4-5 litres with a couple of cups of tea of top. I’m very active and speak a lot for my job though. I do my first 2 litres by 2pm at the latest, earlier if the weather is warm.

Floaty2018 · 23/08/2018 21:08

This is why you're probably a tired mummy.

TillyMint81 · 23/08/2018 21:13

NOT. ENOUGH. (I'm rubbish)

MustBeThin · 23/08/2018 21:25

Over 3ltr a day. I have minimum of 6 x 350ml glasses of water and 3 x 350ml glasses with a little squash. On top of that I have 3 mugs of tea or coffee a day.

I never used to drink ANY water and would probably only have 3 or 4 drinks all day. I got into the habit of drinking water when I was losing weight. As soon as I finish a glass or bottle of water I refill it, that way I know I'm drinking enough. I've noticed now on the rare occasions when I'm out and about and don't drink enough my wee gets really dark when normally it's almost clear. Blush

BonnieF · 23/08/2018 21:27

About 1.5 litres, plus the same again of tea.

Mynamesjohnnyutah · 23/08/2018 21:30

Three litres minimum.

HildaZelda · 23/08/2018 21:34

@AnnieIOH1, 9 LITRES a day? Shock

ourkidmolly · 23/08/2018 21:58

These water guzzlers also spend copious hours refilling from a communal water cooler. Has the smallest little drizzle for the tankards they're all toting. So that's another 10 wasted productivity. And do not get me started on the infusion of lemon and cucumber etc.

Babybearsporij · 23/08/2018 22:00

At least 2-3 litres a day, plus endless teas, coffees, usually soup etc.
