Let's reclaim the five syllable word. University. It grates to read MNers talking about their DC going off to "uni" or even about their own time at "uni". Just call it what it is: university.

Yep to me Uni was cringeworthy unless from an Australian.

College it was.

BlackberryBramble · 23/08/2018 11:24

But language moves on.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 23/08/2018 11:26

onefoot that's brilliant! 😂

NaomiNagata · 23/08/2018 11:30

@CressidaEgg

I have written proof from the eighties of it being called uni. People did use that!

Sparklesocks · 23/08/2018 11:32

Language evolves constantly. It's part of what makes it so interesting!

FanWithoutAGuard · 23/08/2018 11:34

I don't recall uni being a thing until the days of Neighbours.

I came here to say this AuldSpinster.

Mind you.. Neighbours was 30 years ago (this is the sort of thing that reminds me of my age)

Brambleboo · 23/08/2018 11:35

I'm with you, OP. I used to work in student finance and always called it university or college whenever I spoke to students. I did this purposely as I'm not a teenager and didn't want to sound like one.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 23/08/2018 11:35

As a pp said pretty much everyone has a degree theses days.
Let’s be honest here there’s a world of difference between getting a 3rd in film studies at Bath Spa (for eg) and getting a 1st in chemical engineering at Edinburgh (for eg)
Maybe that’s why some people dislike the use of the term uni?

AprilLady4 · 23/08/2018 11:37

Saying university only occasionally is ok, but when you have to say it lots it's far too long (when your kids are there).

CressidaEgg · 23/08/2018 11:42

I hope you are ok?

Fine thanks, hun. You?

Poly is/always has been fine. Same with bra, bus, pub .... just not uni.

OP posts:
FuckKnuckle · 23/08/2018 11:42

@Grinspoon, I assume you typed that in Strine?

BlackberryBramble · 23/08/2018 11:45

Yes to using full words to sound adult.

I think it could give quite an easy psych edge if you are into that sort of thing. So along with the old advice to have good posture, make eye contact and deepen your voice, add "use full words." (..though sadly omnibus and perambulator are too far gone!)

Like Luke Wilson in Idiocracy.

Knittedfairies · 23/08/2018 11:46

I loathe ‘uni’ too.... but would never be brave enough to say it here. To add to MilkTray’s list, I would like to add ‘quote’. You didn’t get a quote from the electrician or whatever - you got a quotation.

c3pu · 23/08/2018 11:48

Stop saying OK, start saying All Correct Grin

BonfiresOfInsanity · 23/08/2018 11:49

I called it Uni in 1989. I blame watching too much neighbours in 6th form. Grin

CuckooCuckooClock · 23/08/2018 11:50

I went in the 90s and we called it uni then. Still do now.
We also called the ex-poly the 'university' (with air inverted commas and a head tilt) because we were academic snobs and pretentious teenagers.
Good times.

BlackberryBramble · 23/08/2018 11:51

I find myself saying "text message" as I just don't think text is sufficient on it's own. And as for "he text me" yesterday, I can't even ..

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 23/08/2018 11:52

Obvs lots of words r shortened eg bus, gym, pram, OK, bye ad nauseum, op’s Post was purely about the term ‘uni’
I agree, it well gets on my mammaries tbf

daintydaisies · 23/08/2018 11:52

mumsastudent · 23/08/2018 11:52

daffodillament · 23/08/2018 11:53

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 23/08/2018 11:54

God blind me = blimey 🧐

toomanychilder · 23/08/2018 11:54

Poly is/always has been fine. Same with bra, bus, pub .... just not uni

BlackberryBramble · 23/08/2018 11:54
