Let's reclaim the five syllable word. University. It grates to read MNers talking about their DC going off to "uni" or even about their own time at "uni". Just call it what it is: university.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 23/08/2018 15:39

@rosewhitetips have you any evidence for this? I think my undergraduate students and my fellow academics would wholeheartedly disagree.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/08/2018 15:40

Clearing is like a safety net. There was a time when there was no such thing.

Probably... there was a time when there weren't all sorts of things; sometimes we call this 'progress'. I know someone who had a summer job doing clearing at UCCA, as it was then, in 1980. Obviously not such a large scale operation, they used shoeboxes full of index cards and phones, but it's not exactly a new phenomenon. (And back then good universities would give students they wanted very low offers, tantamount to unconditional)

DarthLipgloss · 23/08/2018 15:42

I work in a Uni :)

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 23/08/2018 15:46

Eh? I'm heading for 50, always said uni, as did my mother, And you want me to CHANGE?!!! (so wish I could say that in my mum's voice!)

Charolais · 23/08/2018 15:51

There are some that grate on my nerves such as;

Sat Nav - we say GPS here.
Air Con - we say AC or air conditioning.

KateMcD451 · 23/08/2018 15:52

It must be nice having nothing else to worry about

MissConductUS · 23/08/2018 15:55

In the US we say college, so perhaps that's a compromise everyone can live with.

HortenseTheHousecat · 23/08/2018 15:56

It’s college in Ireland too Miss, but in England college is where one does A levels.

HortenseTheHousecat · 23/08/2018 15:57

I think that’s right^^

DontCallMeCharlotte · 23/08/2018 15:58

YABU OP

But so am I, as I agree with you.

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 23/08/2018 16:00

I agree, colleges are usually (not always) post 16 places, might be where you do A levels (Sixth Form college) or other non-degree qualifications (Further Education colleges).

Stupomax · 23/08/2018 16:02

Stupomax - what English accents do you like. You're ok - this is a safe space

It's AIBU! It's anything but safe Grin

Nagaram · 23/08/2018 16:05

Blame the Ozzies. We travelled round there for several months and now there are some terms I say that are so shortened I don't even know how to spell them. For example, instead of saying 'doing a U-Turn' we say ' do a ewey'.

ChuffingNorah · 23/08/2018 16:05

Totally agree OP, but I am aware it's inexplicable and totally irrational. To my 1980s University educated ears( we called it College), it just sounds unbearably TWEE.

BlackberryBramble · 23/08/2018 16:10

RoboJesus that made me chuckle. If only we could uptick I'd have saved myself a post!

BlackberryBramble · 23/08/2018 16:10

Do a ewey in the Ute.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/08/2018 16:11

Much shorter words and university get shortened. In all sorts of ways. It doesn’t generally bother me. Uni certainly doesn’t.

For what it’s worth I went to university in the nineteen eighties doing a Bachelor of Arts degree. Except I spent more time in the discotheque and public house so only came out with a second class degree upper division degree.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 23/08/2018 16:12

I say university when i am talking to someone

I type uni because i am very lazy

BlackberryBramble · 23/08/2018 16:13

I love the word discotheque. I'll try that in the kids when I get the oppo.

BlackberryBramble · 23/08/2018 16:14

"try it on the kids." Natch.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/08/2018 16:19

Obv

RoseWhiteTips · 23/08/2018 16:20

Don’t you mean kidz?

SillySallySingsSongs · 23/08/2018 16:22

The bums on seats obsession extends even to good unis. Clearing is like a safety net. There was a time when there was no such thing. I find these things depressing; the word uni not so much.

Clearing has been around for a very long time.

TriptychTwins · 23/08/2018 16:27

I'm studying at U.N.I at the moment Grin

Don't have time to say the whole word.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 23/08/2018 16:28

Ever say 'hi'? Fuck You, say 'hello'.
