to think that Hannah Gadsby: Nanette is essential viewing

So I've checked the archives (from my phone, which isn't always reliable but it's what I have) and I've not seen a major thread on here about her. She's been mentioned on AIBU but not the topic of it.

The show is on Netflix and I've not seen anything on stage - and without doubt never ever by a comedian - more powerful.

I've never had a stand up comic make me laugh and then be in floods of tears.

I'm only half asking if IABU because I don't really believe I am. If IABU then please list someone who did something more amazing than that, because I'd be very interested in watching.

Wow. That last bit was something else. It's hard to even express how I feel

PositiveVibez · 13/09/2018 07:29

Looked for a thread on this as I watched it last night. All I can say is WOW.

I laughed at the start, but I ended up absolutely sobbing. I was emotionally drained at the end. It was AMAZING.

I will be watching it with my daughter when it is age appropriate and I think it is something EVERYONE who is old enough, needs to watch.

My DD is still too young! That's why I started this thread (and posted all over FB about it!!). I want to watch it again, but I'm not quite ready yet.

Would also love to see it at the cinema!

I've had Nanette on my watch list for about a month and just got round to finishing it tonight (I'd watched the first half hour having heard only that it picks up in the second half) and now I kind of just wish I could be around some people who know about this stuff and understand it. She is fantastic, isn't she? I watched the end bit with her with the tea and the dogs and I thought how brilliant she is just being herself. She carves out a space that it's easier to breathe in. It's like, by treating herself as worthy of attention, by treating her own story as important, she gives the rest of us permission to do it for ourselves.

NotNachoing · 19/09/2018 23:27

Yes I think you're right about that @toomuchtooold . I felt I could breathe after I watched it and it's a feeling I get now thinking back to it. She's really don't something quite incredible.

Yanbu. I watched it after seeing a mention here on mn and now I keep forcing people to watch it if they haven't already.

@Wearywithteens although Hannah is a stand-up comedian, Nanette isn't a stand-up comedy show, and isn't trying to be. Its brilliance is not to be measured on a laughometer. The question is not whether it's funny (though it is in places) but whether it is important - and omg yes it is that.

NotNachoing · 20/09/2018 17:56

@Wearywithteens go back and watch the next 20-30 mins. If you want to turn it off then you'll have more of an idea of the show, but like a pp said, it's not a comedy show as such..which isn't apparent until later...

OP posts:
MQv2 · 20/09/2018 18:03

Another who turned it off

I know it's meant to get important and powerful but I just didn't find her funny and how think the powerful and important element has been hyped so much they I don't really have any appetite to revisit

badasscafe1 · 20/09/2018 18:06

Those with teenagers - what do you think is a suitable age? I have a mature 14 year old....

inquiquotiokixul · 20/09/2018 23:23

There are references to rape and drugs and physical violence. I think a 14yo is borderline but probably OK if she is reasonably mature.

Squidgee · 20/09/2018 23:26

if you gave up, you NEED to go back and stick with it, you really, really do.

I cannot stress how important it is that you watch it to the end. Please.

theWarOnPeace · 20/09/2018 23:56

It was electrifying, it turned me inside out and made me feel like I’d been kicked in the stomach. I honestly felt like it took me a while to process it. Totally agree on it being essential viewing.

I can see it may be lost for some people. There are plenty of excellent reviews though, so I think overall people probably got it.

ShowOfHands · 23/09/2018 18:56

I thought it was astonishing. I wanted to applaud her at times and sat in stunned silence at others. I have made everybody I love watch it. It's a very important piece of work.

Pumperthepumper · 23/09/2018 19:00

I think it gains much more than it loses by being marketed as comedy. The show is all
about breaking down barriers and seeing familiar things in different ways - I actually can’t think of a better way than presenting it as stand up. She’s a genius, the show was so clever.

Pumperthepumper · 23/09/2018 19:02

That should have said ‘seeing familiar tropes in different ways’.

ChattyLion · 28/08/2019 20:39

Good grief, she is brilliant. Just watched it again.
