To think there must be a medication to alleviate extreme tiredness

I feel like I want to gouge my eyes out I'm that tired and I hate having to go to sleep during the day. This has been going on for years. I would give anything for medication to make this go away.

No no no. There is no quick fix to this. You really must see your gp and any specialist that is necessary. You need to find out why you are so exhausted all the time. Having a daytime kip isn’t so bad

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 22/08/2018 20:22

Have you been checked by a GP? I was like this, I eventually gave in and went to my GP and was sent for blood tests as originally thought it was thyroid issues. I received two phone calls from my GP telling me to contact them urgently, turns out I had a severe vitamin D deficiency and needed high doses of it to rectify the problem.

I was sleeping 8 hrs a night, then dropping off at work, was fatigued when driving, getting home and nearly sleeping through school runs because I'd dozed off in the middle of the afternoon when I got home from work. My DH confiscated my car keys at one point. And I had to have half hourly alarms set on my phone all day, every day to keep waking me up. After 12 weeks of treatment I was fine.

jasminemaya · 22/08/2018 20:24

I was going to suggest floradix as it may be iron deficiency / anaemia but definitely see your GP.

Hamandcheesebaguette · 22/08/2018 20:29

Are you on the pill?

I was dog tired all day every day for years. Eventually just accepted that was my life.

Came off the pill for other reasons and feel like a new woman!!! No more almost falling asleep at my desk, napping as soon as I get home from work

glintandglide · 22/08/2018 20:30

I’m dog tired. It comes over me like a wave about 7pm. I don’t think it’s medical- just a busy life- but would love drugs to cure it

EvaHarknessRose · 22/08/2018 20:31

Adding to the list of things to exclude - Menopause?

agnurse · 22/08/2018 20:32

Definitely see your provider for a checkup. Fatigue this bad is not normal. You would probably benefit from iron, vitamin B12, blood count, and thyroid tests.

Rarfy · 22/08/2018 20:33

Just popping on to suggest vitamin b12.

bluerunningshoes · 22/08/2018 20:35

do you sleep/rest enough?
7 hours uninterrupted? do you snore?

but I agree with previous posters. being so tired during the day is not normal and a checkup by gp might be a good idea.

gendercritter · 22/08/2018 20:41

I've had M.E for nearly 15 years and nope, no pill. The medical profession have left me to rot.

There is an increasing amount of research happening though. My exhaustion is so extreme I can hardly get out of bed sometimes.

JesusPerezWept · 22/08/2018 20:43

Thanks everyone for your input. I guess this is a drip feed but anyway

  1. I have hypothyroidism which is under control
  2. I'm on medication for ADHD which can cause tiredness
  3. I have haemochromotosis, a genetic blood condition which causes issues with iron levels
  4. I'm on the pill, Cerazette (sp?) but haven't had a period for two months now. I'm not pregnant
  5. I'm early 40s so menopause is possible

My husband gets cross when he finds me sleeping. I hate sleeping - I only do it because I can't go on!!!

Which is why I want medication to wake me up!

JesusPerezWept · 22/08/2018 20:44

I shall try Vitamin B12, thank you

JesusPerezWept · 22/08/2018 20:45

@gendercritter I'm sorry Thanks

OP posts:
Sleepyandtired21 · 22/08/2018 20:46

Rest is the only solution - why does your husband get cross when you’re sleeping?! You’ve listed several factors that could explain it so I think you just need to make allowances. Speaking as someone who works 50 hours a week with chronic fatigue syndrome and shingles atm so I’ve experienced my fair share of tiredness. Fighting it isn’t worth it. Have you tried b12 jabs?

JesusPerezWept · 22/08/2018 20:47

@bluerunningshoes I do get enough sleep at night and enough rest during the day. And I don't snore, I dribble Grin

6triesbuttingout · 22/08/2018 20:48

Second Vit D and poss calcium levels, ask docs for blood test

JesusPerezWept · 22/08/2018 20:49

@Sleepyandtired21 I think you are amazing. I'm sorry you have shingles on top of everything else you're going through. I haven't heard of the jab. I'll look into it now Thanks

I'm like this. Most days by the time I'm up & dressed I could easily go back to sleep again. I often have to nap just to get through the day. I've had blood tests & everything came back normal. I am menopausal though so that could be why. If you find a magic cure OP please share

SugarandVinegar · 22/08/2018 20:54

Hi OP, I.m hypothyroid too among other things. You could try D-ribose supplement (a scoop measure in coffee 3 x daily but you can get it in capsules as well.) It's a simple carb that is accessible to the cells for energy.
Also Serrapatise (sp) is another - gives me energy though it's for joints.

CSIblonde · 22/08/2018 20:58

I'd up your vitamin c as it helps with iron absorption. And as pp said, add Vitamin D & B12. I changed my diet to more fruit & veg & felt so much better.

statetrooperstacey · 22/08/2018 21:05

There are plenty of drugs to alleviate tiredness unfortunately they are illegal . Not impossible to get hold of though and probably cheaper than prescription charges😁

IvorHughJarrs · 22/08/2018 21:28

The problem is that tiredness can be a symptom of many things and often cannot be pinned down to anything particular. DD1 has extreme tiredness at times, just as you describe, yet tests have shown up nothing. I have bought her all sorts of vitamins and supplements in the hope they will help but no change

ChocAuVin · 22/08/2018 21:33

This was me before I found I was gluten intolerant. At 28! I had thought I was just naturally lazy and needed daily naps / never wanted to get up Hmm

Stressedoverkids · 22/08/2018 21:47

@JesusPerezWept

I have been there with the tiredness and have had it sorted out.

I didn't go to the GP about it for ages because I had another chronic illness but actually that chronic illness had caused Vitamin D deficiency and folic acid deficiency.

Don't make the mistake of taking random supplements because you won't get accurate results when you get blood tests.

In addition no period for two months probably warrants a GP visit anyway.

I can't believe my life now that I am no longer tired. It really is worth sorting.

GlitterNails · 22/08/2018 22:31

I totally get it. I've had all the blood tests, have tried all sorts of vitamins.

I have a very painful illness, which can cause agonising pain at times - but it's the fatigue I wish I could get rid of. It stops me working. I only have a few hours to function each day - I have to sleep half the day.

I'd have sleep studies, all sorts. They just say I have to live with it. All these medications and research and nothing to get rid of extreme fatigue.
