Worried about holiday

Summertimehaze · 22/08/2018 14:45

Hello

AIBU to worry about my first holiday with my LG. She will be 9 months and we are going abroad. I’m so worried about her routine ... she has a great one at home. Also worried about the evenings and her sleep. And the fact I’m mucking up her routine for a week. My husband says I need to chill out. Any words of wisdom?

I'm with your husband. Try to relax. Babies' routines change so often with developmental leaps anyway, so you may find it's all different in a few weeks no matter what you do.

You need to chill out! Can you follow her routine whilst on holiday? What about the evenings is worrying you? Are you self catering or in a hotel?

Summertimehaze · 22/08/2018 14:49

Thanks for the replies. We are in a hotel. She has 30 min nap in morn and 2 hour at lunch and sleeps very well overnight. I guess I’m just worried about it all going out of the window. If I’m honest, I’m scared of the sleep deprivation of the early days coming back

So yabu BUT I sympathise! I had this with our first holiday with dc1. She was 7mo, wasn’t sleeping well at all and I was dreading the holiday as I thought we would have a miserable time. But it was lovely! One of the best holidays we’ve ever had. Dd slept till 8 in the morning on two of the nights we were away Shock and everyone made a big fuss of her and said how cute she was. Now she is an energetic 3.5yo (as well as a now 7mo dc2) it’s a lot harder tbh. We haven’t actually been on holiday as a family yet though, so maybe it will be lovely when we do!

SaoirseTheSeahorse · 22/08/2018 14:52

We were also in a hotel. Was lovely.

Summertimehaze · 22/08/2018 14:54

That’s made me feel so much better seahorse !!! Thank you

Unless you are going half way around the world, try to stick to UK time for food, naps and bedtime etc.. a couple of hours later meant that we felt we were getting a later night and a lie in. Take a travel black out blind.
I went on a long weekend to Spain recently without my girls. There was a couple with twin babies flying for the first time. They (babies) were absolutely fine. Take a boob/bottle/dummy for take off/ landing though. Oh and new (to baby) toys so she’s only interested in them.
It’s hard not to worry about a change to routine when (your) sleep is so precious at that age.

TroubledLichen · 22/08/2018 14:58

She’ll be fine! Just loosely stick to her routine but do naps in the buggy. I’ve taken mine on a few holidays around that age and it was lovely, it’s when they’re waking that the relaxing truly goes out of the window.

user1471459936 · 22/08/2018 14:59

I've just remembered that when we went for a holiday with our son when he was 13 months old he actually slept for a whole 12 hours. Which he hadn't done before or since (he is now almost 4 years old). The only problem with hotel daytime naps is that you are then stuck in the room with them in the dark. Lots of Mumsnet!

AtlantaGinandTonic · 22/08/2018 15:00

We went to the US when DD2 was four months old. I worried about how she would travel, and how it would affect her, but in the end she was fine. We were all fine. Have a lovely holiday!

Summertimehaze · 22/08/2018 15:38

This makes me feel so much better!!! Its the sleep thing but think I can be obsessive with this

Try and not fret over it. The first time we took my daughter away she was a baby and she slept a lot, more than normal in fact. Straight back into her routine when we got back.

TroubledLichen · 22/08/2018 15:52

If it’s somewhere hot I always find mine sleeps more!

Icantgetnosleep000 · 22/08/2018 15:54

Even if it goes out of the window, you'll get it back again, along with lovely memories of time well spent as a family. In years to come I guarantee you'll remember the holiday, and not any sleep/routine issues surrounding it. I also find it personally better to "mix things up a bit" for my own sake, in order to not become so set in my ways I get scared of doing anything and upsetting the perfect routine

Summertimehaze · 22/08/2018 16:08

Such good advice here. I am definitely neurotic with routine and I do think I just need to adapt. I think it’s because we are getting good sleep finally that I’m terrified of us regressing back to the no sleep days

Deffo take blackout blinds. I just got a roll of fabric from John Lewis and took some pegs.
Bin liners on windows work well.
See if you can do buggy naps.
At nine months you might be able to start bedtime in the buggy, go for a drink and then transfer to cot when you return to your room.
Good luck Smile

ajandjjmum · 22/08/2018 16:24

It really is one of those things you'll look back on, and laugh at yourself. I was paranoid about routine - I loved my DC having naps. I used to get worried when the clocks went forward or back, thinking that I'd never get them back in to routine. But you do.

I remember driving home from my parents one night, and knowing it was too late for then 6/7 month old DS to have a bath before bed. I was really worried he wouldn't sleep all night without his bath! Grin

DC are now mid-20s, and don't seem to have suffered unduly from my paranoia!

Enjoy your holiday!

Summertimehaze · 22/08/2018 16:41

I think it’s the perspective you lose when you’re in the thick of it! Will probably look back and laugh

The sleeping in the buggy is hard because she’s just not used to it ... she’s always in her bed

OP posts:
ajandjjmum · 22/08/2018 17:07

Maybe start trying her in her buggy for some of her naps?

Summertimehaze · 22/08/2018 17:55

@ajandjjmum not sure I’m brave enough 🤦‍♀️. Sad as that sounds

I was exactly the same when DC2 was 6 months but it was fine. Take lots of dark pashmina scarves as pp have said. I would stick losely to the routine so she gets enough sleep but don't worry too much. I then did not go away for another two years as toddlers are really not holiday friendly like small babies. All fine again now though. Be brave 😀

Roussette · 22/08/2018 18:15

'Summer I was JUST like you and I remember it well (even though my DCs are now adults!). I was petrified of my DC1 regressing because it had been a long journey getting to the point of a good night's sleep and I couldn't bear to think of going back. I promise you, no one could've been worse about routine than me!

Yet, she slept in the buggy and we went out for a meal! She was so exhausted from all the fresh air, and being in the pool, she just slept! We did do the bath routine thing though and just put her in the buggy instead of bed. On the nights she was particularly difficult, we just put her to bed and sat on the balcony and drank DH got a takeaway for us to munch on.

Go for it, I am sure your DD will be fine and to be honest if you keep some sort of routine, she will just slot back in when you get home

TroubledLichen · 22/08/2018 18:25

Try a buggy nap in the garden or walking round the block when it’s a nice day? If it’s a total disaster and she won’t nap after 30 mins then you’re at home and can pop her into her cot.

If it helps I had this exact arguement with DH who was convinced DD would not sleep in her buggy after going out for dinner on holiday and then wouldn’t transfer to her cot. We went anyway as it was a family thing we couldn’t get out of, she slept just fine and no issues whatsoever!

Summertimehaze · 22/08/2018 18:40

Thank you all for taking the time to reply. Some great tips and it’s good to know I’m not the only one obsessed about routine. My DH says I’m uptight (in the nicest of ways honestly!) but he’s also happy he’s got his evenings back and a good nights sleep. He can’t have it both ways!

Will def do routine and then put her in buggy to sleep.

If I’m truthful, I think I’m a bit scarred from the newborn days. Really didn’t cope all that well.
