9yo watched JAWS on sleepover

I've just picked up my DD from a sleepover, she's just 9 and a gentle, fairly sensitive sort. First thing she says to me is "I really didn't like Jaws mummy!" And the dad is like "oh yeah that might not have been the best choice of movie ..."

I'm fewwwmin! Jaws is a horror film. I watched it recently and jumped out of my skin a few times. And I'm not bloody well 9. There's a shed load of claret and kids being eaten alive and realistic limbs being severed and we are - to cap it all off - going on our ONLY holiday of the whole year (cos we are skint) camping at the beach tomorrow. She's already told me she won't be getting in the water when she normally loves bodyboarding. CHEERS FOR THAT!!!

The kid who's house the sleepover happened at is a child who can't have sleepovers at anyone else's cos she gets anxious and stressed if she's away from her own home so how the effing chuff have they managed to show MY kid a horror movie while she's there!!!??? Grrrrrrrr

We have had a talk about there NOT being great whites around the UK and that the film is just pretend but she just recounted the part about the little boy getting eaten and burst into tears.

What would you do?

I wouldn't do anything, except not send her again if I was genuinely unhappy. This is one of those things that occurs as a problem to some people and not to others.

It's an awesome film. My dd watched it at 10. Bloody brilliant direction.

Apart from the head falling out of the boat you don't see anything really.

@GerdaLovesLili I know - but whether or not it is rated PG we know it's a horrible gorefest and I wouldn't show it to kids that young.

Nothing you can do, that ship has sailed. I watched it about that age I think. Still scares me as an adult! I don't go near the sea for at least 6 months after watching it, way too scared.

I saw it at the cinema when I was 11 (snuck in). It did scare me a bit but I survived. Honestly don't make a big deal out of it. It wasn't a porno.

Rent the movie. Point out every single fake shot and poke fun at it. It’s not at all realistic these days.

If one of my dc get scared or upset by a film I try and find footage of how the film is made and what the actors are up to now to show them it isn't real.

Its a PG though, they did nothing wrong.

We were that family. 6 yr olds would come to us, watch Dodgeball
and go home asking "Mummy what's a muffdiver?"
Everyone survived.

When we has kids on sleepover I'd ask their parents what films to ban/watch.
All kids are different and get upset by different things. DS1 loved horror and sci fi films, but I couldn't let him watch anything weepy like ET or Free Willy, it would have been too much for him.

I wouldn’t have thought this was suitable for a 9yo either but I suppose it is a PG and the parents maybe judged it by their own kid who may have been fine with it? I don’t think there is much you can do now except keep reassuring your daughter. Maybe she would like to learn more about sharks and how rare shark attacks are, even in places where they are common? It might make her feel better.

It’s one of ds2’s favourite films and he’s only 7.

There's the severed arm on the beach (roughly 3 seconds)
Bllod in the water
Head falling out of boat (yes that is a jump scare)
Robert Shaw blood in mouth when he's being munched.
There might be a leg as well.

It's superbly directed and hasn't dated much. The special effects of the shark were pretty crap even then.

I agree with you, I’d be upset too. I saw Jaws around the same age as your DD and I have been terrified of the sea ever since. It’s a great film but I don’t plan on letting my children watch it until they’re teens!

It really isn't a gorefest and most definitely not a horror movie, there's not much in it and definitely no realistic looking severed limbs, I watched it with my DCs recently. Very dated and fake looking. However different things scare different kids, my 10 yo gets scared at the end of Harry Potter but is fine with stuff like Ghostbusters or Gremlins.

I think if you are a bit more relaxed then maybe she won't feel so stressed about it, nothing you can do now except not to make a big deal about it and hopefully she'll forget about it.

I must say though, there is no way I would show it to 9yos on a sleepover, I always check with parents about films before they watch them at my house.

She's not "sheltered" I just don't tend to show little kids movies with loads of blood in regardless of who directed it.

I wouldn't have shown it either OP but seriously it's not that bad.
