Sorry re posting here for traffic

Just looking for a bit of advice please. Is it too early to see a gp ? Should I continue to try treat it at home ?

Been bathing im dettol, as well as putting germaline on it. Also been keeping a plaster on it to try keep skin soft. NHS website says to try push the skin back but it hurts like hell.

Anything else I should be doing ? Its only been like this a few days.

I can’t see the picture but the only thing that cured mine was to cut a V shape in the centre of the nail - the nail will then try to close the gap therefore pulling away from the sides and taking the pressure off the toe. It won’t provide immediate relief but it works! Hope that makes sense!

BloodyDisgrace · 22/08/2018 10:59

I don't think it's unreasonable. You must be in pain, can't walk properly, so of course the doctor should see it and help.

Have you thought about making a Chiropodist appointment.

My DDad had an ingrowing toenail recently- it was a quick appointment and they solved it in one visit. About £30/35.

Can’t see the pic! But if it’s causing pain, you can just get a chiropodist or podiatrist to treat it. They can either do a partial wedge resection or a complete removal - it takes 5 minutes under local anaesthetic.
Most ingrown toenails are caused by the angle of the nail plate, and are nothing to do with what type of shoes you wear etc, so there's not a lot you can do in the way of prevention or non surgical treatment.

I'd see a chiropodist/podiatrist rather than a GP - when I visited mine with an ingrowing toenail I was basically told to do just that! They have the right tools and the expertise. A GP with a 10 minute slot won't have either I don't think.

Purplepinkpurple · 22/08/2018 11:19

@loveglee its far too short for that at the moment no way i could do that without damage.

Unfortunatley no extra £££ for podiatrist - last month of mat leave and skint :(

The photo (that doesnt seem to.be showing) is from last night. However this morning it looks allot worse. I could only get a nurses appointment but thats not till late this afternoon :(

Is there such a thing as an nhs podiatrist? You could see them for free with you nhs exemption if you're on maternity leave.

Purplepinkpurple · 22/08/2018 11:41

Thanks @janek I presumed all podiatary services were private. Did a quick google and spoke with the department in my area. I can self refer or the nurse can refer me. For non urgent appointments the wait time is 6 weeks .

My daughter has had one that was very inflamed and pussy, the doctor showed her how to pull it out with a cotton bud after soaking in Epsom salts. She is prone to ingrowing on her big toe, but has managed not to have it taken off. So it might be worth you going to the docs.
