am i being unreasonable to expect a double pushchair to last longer than 5 months!!!!!!!

theUrbanDryad · 04/06/2007 22:25

double or tandem?

doubles tend to collapse in the middle, IME (i have a few friends with twins!) unlucky either way. what make is it? is it still under warranty?

chickenlegs · 04/06/2007 22:43

sorry to keep you, 5 month old has woken and is demanding attention.
it is a hoxton, tandem from mothercare and although it is still under warranty apparently the wheels are not covered?! which of course are the problem.

5 month not settling, i'll try to come back later.

baby is back in bed and my fingers and toes are crossed, so now back the matter in hand.
i choose the pushchair as it was quite conpacked for a tandem, what i didn't relised was that the wheels are like bike wheels and therefore, pucture and go down often, which is fine but i have rode a number of bikes in my time and none of them have needed repairing every other day so i have taken the THING back to the store and been told that the wheels are not under guarentee, they can send the THING back to the manufacter but if the wheels need replacing it will cost about £30 each! there are 8 wheels!!!!!!!
they lent me a loan pushchair which my toddler was able to escape from then called me back about a month later to say that there was nothing wrong with the THING.
as soon as i got it home again i took it for a spin and no sooner that i was round the corner one of the wheels had gone down again!!!!!!!! aarrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!

Having the same problem with our costto duet lite. Wheel fell off after 4 1/2 months use. Got it repaired and the same wheel broke 10 days later.
Have no faith in the pushie's reliabilty now and we had to fork out £60 at argos on a twin to tide us over.
Am not impressed - not having a working double wrecks our day.

mylittleimps · 05/06/2007 00:04

get a Mountain Buggy double terrain absolutely fantastic and tough and durable and you'll never want another make

WinkyWinkola · 05/06/2007 07:58

Or Phil and Ted's sport. Brilliant but big so you need a big car to put it in.

thehairybabysmum · 05/06/2007 08:44

Why dont you take it to your local bike shop to look at the wheels...sounds liek you are just prone to punctures...you can buy stuff for bike tyres that lines the inside of the tyre to stop punctures.

theUrbanDryad · 05/06/2007 10:20

i presume you've replaced the inner tubes etc?

we had an Urban Detour Mothercare travel system on which the front wheel kept going down, we replaced the inner tube and it was fine. however, this had 3 wheels, not 8. sympathy...

adath · 05/06/2007 10:47

I looked at this one when I was having ds and never bought it mainly because of the tyres. They are tiny stroller sized although air filled so not a normal size to get inner tubes from.
From experience mothercare customer service is worse thatn poor to say the least.

imnot27 · 05/06/2007 11:02

We filled our tyres with some foam repair stuff from halfords, so even if they get punctured they don't deflate. Is called flatmate, I believe.

madmarchhare · 05/06/2007 11:06

Yes, had this with urban detour 3 wheeler. Some of the larger mothercare stores have a 'technician' on site, I just took mine there and they sorted it out for a couple of quid. Agree that bike shop, repair kit/foam is the best way to go. Afraid that is just the nature of tyres.

helenhismadwife · 05/06/2007 16:47

YANBU someone else had a similar problem with something else they had bought for a baby, have you tried contacting trading standards? it sounds like it is not fit for the purpose it was bought for, I would ring them up or try going back to mothercare and saying that if you dont get any joy from them ie a refund then you will be taking the matter to trading standards, do it on a busy day preferably a saturday and in the middle of the pushchair section talking loud enough about their crap customer service so that people close to you can hear from experience they cant get you out of the store quickly enough

chickenlegs · 06/06/2007 07:52

Thanks for all your comments.
To Helenhismadwife, yes i have taken it back again and i was thinking about trading standards. i've just got to the stage where i don't even want to look at it anymore let alone fix AGAIN.
the worse thing is i have brought another one from Preciouslittleones.com last week and i'm still waiting for it to arrive so i don't have one at all now!
oh well today is another day, hopefully it will come today. As for Mothercare, i am very suprised that there customer service is so bad and that adath has discovered that too, i will be emailing them again and i will keep you informed.
thanks again for your thoughts.

mothercare cust services is poor. the woman just sort of shrugged when i asked about mine.

another place to try is mobility scooter repair/sales place. for inner tubes, anyway.

hope you get some joy soon!

helenhismadwife · 06/06/2007 14:16

keep us posted how you get on but a pushchair should definately last for more than 5 months

bookwormmum · 06/06/2007 14:19

The guarantee is probably only for six months anyway - my dd's stroller broke after about 8 months - the seat became detached from the chassis - and they offered to get it repaired for £50 but it wouldn't be covered under the guarantee. I bought a new stroller (which was actually a better model) for about £99 and left the old one in the shop for them to dispose of. I wasn't too happy though as I had to go through the rigmarole of taking each stroller out to my car to see if it fitted in my car boot plus I was £99 down.

nearlythere · 06/06/2007 14:20

hows about giving cosatto a ring (i'll go and find their cust serv number)? they make the hoxton on mothercares behalf. if had been the duet lite they would have sorted it out by sending a new one to you by next day courier (they are very good at customer service).

Here lies a lesson about mothercare- at least you didn't buy it online!

chickenlegs · 07/06/2007 22:21

giving cosatto a ring? thay sounds like a good idea.

things have been a little hectic round here and i'm still waiting for mothercare's response this time. the pushchair is back with them, so the ball is in their court.

on a much happier note though, my new pushchair arrived, a day late, but is fab.
it's a hauck sun duo from preciouslittleones.com. it's lightweight, narrow, padded, folds down easierly and small and bright red and yellow, still haven't decided whether that last point is a good one or not. but it's great, even though we have only had it a day and a half it's had a good run out to make up for all the lost time.

i will keep you posted on the other matter but for now i'm going to rest my aching feet.

night night
