Breastfeeding in a swimming pool

A story has come out about a woman been told that she can't breastfeed IN a public pool. AIBU to think that's actually fair enough?

I think women should be allowed to breastfeed wherever they need/want to. We have a massive issue in this country with women feeling uncomfortable breastfeeding in public and I agree that needs to stop but IN a pool? This isn't pleasant is it? The water is meant to be clean and if there is milk in the water isn't that a bit...off?!

Fully expecting to be flamed here but really interested to see what people think about it.

@Artichoke18 Well I've always managed to time feeding around swimming even when they're teeny - just feed a bit earlier then go! Then feed again in cafe afterwards, baby is definitely ravenous & knackered afterwards ☺️

Saw a woman on Instagram bf her toddler whilst she was go-karting. It was the only way he would settle apparently.

Grin

Just get out and sit on the side. We don’t eat in a public pool there is just no need

If your baby isn’t settling in the pool then take them out it’s not a necessity they do

Why do so many women make such a big fuss over bf in this country (and the US) so many of of us get on with it with out demanding everyone takes note and pats us on the back for bf everywhere possible

Why does anyone else care apart from the woman breastfeeding? When I bf during the baby swimming class nobody cared, the class carried on, I kept to the side, a bit away, and then came back when I was done. It worked well as the water was low and warm (gym swimming pool). I would have attracted a lot more attention by going out and sitting by the side. Worked for me and surely that's all that matters!

CripsSandwiches · 21/08/2018 22:27

Who cares? Any lactating woman is likely to leak a bit in the pool anyway. AT least if she's feeding the milk is going down the baby's throat rather than floating off into the water. I wouldn't do it myself personally but couldn't care less if someone else did.

Some people just take things too far in the name of breastfeeding rights.
It’s very simple, if you can’t bottle feed in a pool you shouldn’t be able to breastfeed in a pool. There is no discrimination. *

It takes 10 seconds to get out and feed at the side, if you have another child unsupervised I’m afraid that’s your problem, they’ll have to get out too.

Momo27 · 22/08/2018 08:47

Not this again.

Stupid attention seeking twat wanting her moment of ‘fame’ in the papers. Of course it’s not acceptable for anyone to eat or drink anything in a swimming pool. So you just get out and do it poolside.

Madmarchpear · 22/08/2018 09:21

I don't think there's much chance of an 18m old posseting. And a tiny bit of sterile breastmilk is the least of your problems in the human soup of a public swimming pool.

Mamawingingit1234 · 27/08/2018 13:20

We took our 2 to the pool recently (2.5 yr and 5 months). Luckily my hubby could stay in the pool with our toddler while I got out and fed the baby at the cafe (open cafe area just off from the pool) but if it was just me I would have totally got all of us out the pool to feed! Sure we should be allowed to feed anywhere but would you really want to! I loath ragging on other mums but 18months!!! There is no reason she needed to feed there and then.

BamBamDoDo · 27/08/2018 23:30

... I guarantee that there are copious amounts of pees, bogies, leaky milky boobs and sick in all pools .... popping a boob out for a bit of boobie juice is the least of your worries!!

WanderingTrolley1 · 27/08/2018 23:32

It’s unacceptable.

Lethaldrizzle · 27/08/2018 23:47

What about pool bars on holiday? Are you allowed to breast feed in them? Or will the awful breast milk pollute the water? Hmm

AllesAusLiebe · 28/08/2018 01:10

Just no. Silly, lazy woman desperate for her 5 minutes of fame. Just get out of the pool.

I also don’t see any reason why an 18 month old can’t wait. It’s a life lesson - you can’t always get what you want immediately when you want it.

AllesAusLiebe · 28/08/2018 01:12

Lethaldrizzle why are you at a pool bar with a baby? Are you both enjoying a margarita?

onetimeposter · 28/08/2018 01:16

I breastfed 3 but I think she should have got out. I also think that with babies over the age of 6 months more modesty should be used-not that there is a problem with breastfeeding but people feel awkward around feeding older infants and I think everyone should behave in ways which keep others comfortable.

MakeItStopNeville · 28/08/2018 01:29

I breast fed all 4 of mine but absolutely no way would I breastfeed in a pool. All that chlorinated pee in a bowl?! Why would you want to feed your child in that?!!

PS I have a pool and know how quickly the chlorination changes. If it’s on the turn, ewwwwww!
