I know this sort of thing is a big deal to teenager so need some help!

What sort of pencil case is your 13 year old girl having for September? Been tasked with buying my nieces who says she really doesn’t mind, but I know once term starts she will see others with trendy ones!

Dd not did!

LemonysSnicket · 21/08/2018 18:39

I had a clear one at that age - Muji. Or else try Skinny Dip for cool designs.

SummerStrong · 21/08/2018 18:40

Expensive....but Jack Wills pencil cases are desired by many Wink

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 21/08/2018 18:41

My daughter is about to start yr8 and a plain black one was requested. No fur sparkles or any other kind of embellishments just plain black. Found one in WH Smith that fitted the bill.

Complete opposite to be at school. I couldn’t find one sparkly and pink enough. I’d be in heaven in the stationary shops these days. (That makes me sound ancient!!)

ChairinSage · 21/08/2018 18:42

DD1 had a large pencil case which was actually a sparkly make up bag from New Look to carry her coloured pencils, glue sticks etc., and a small, slimline pencil case from Homesense for just a couple of pens, pencil and ruler so she didn't need to rummage at the start of a lesson.

DS has never bothered with a pencil case and just has a selection in his blazer with protractor etc in the front pocket of his bag...

My 13 year old daughter has bought this one....www.paperchase.co.uk/stationery/essentials/pencil-cases/cherry-blsm-square-p-case.html

Thanks everyone. I sent her a few pictures and she has chosen a tie dye print Hype one. Now just need to stock it up with stationary!

What a lovely Auntie you are!

SleepyMcEdie · 21/08/2018 19:06

She is a good kid. One of 9 living in severe deprivation and so deserves a little spoiling every now and again. She spends a lot of time with me but I’ve not been well so not been able to have her as much this summer as I usually would.

On top of
Mine used to carefully tear the lining of blazer pockets so they could fit everything in.

I was Angry till I tried it with my dog walking jackets Wink

SleightOfMind · 21/08/2018 19:17

They love good pens etc though. Sleepy, could you get decent basics then get her to come with you to choose some frivolous luxuries or is it a surprise?

SleepyMcEdie · 21/08/2018 19:19

I had hoped to take her shopping this week but haven’t been well enough so have ordered online.

I have absolutely no advice to offer but I just wanted to say that I love this post so much - it's so lovely after all the angst that seems to end up on MN.

Brings back memories of my kids going back to school 💖

I teach in a girls secondary. Your niece sounds lovely. My recommendation for stationery to fill it with is pastel coloured highlighters or zebra pastel mid-liners. They were everywhere this year. Good quality coloured gel pens (muji, frixion etc) were also much coveted whereas a couple of years ago gel pens were out and fineliners were the big thing. A lot of our older kids got into “studygramming” this year and this seemed to involve using brush markers to write elaborate, calligraphy-style titles and subheadings on everything. However that trend seemed to be confined mainly to years 10 and 11.

OriginalGeordie · 21/08/2018 19:35

My 13 yr old chose a clear see through one with a black zip because in her words “I couldn’t care less about stuff like that”. She cared about the school bag though, £50 from Pink!

SleepyMcEdie · 21/08/2018 19:43

Thanks Dumbledore! I am also a secondary teacher but in wuite a deprived school where most of the kids don’t own pencil cases or pens. I’ve just stocked up my supply of them to lend (give) out during the first term.

What a lovely teacher you are Flowers

SleepyMcEdie · 21/08/2018 19:51

Saladfingers if only I could afford the £5 each for a scientific calculator! Would make a big difference to some of my GCSE students.

I know how tight funding is but surely it would be in the school's interest to fund this in your area to improve pass rates.

SleepyMcEdie · 21/08/2018 20:08

Saladfingers- we have a policy that we will loan a calculator for the exam if the student leaves their phone or keys with the HOD as insurance. Sadly most of my students (bottom sets) would rather fail their exam than leave a valued possession with someone else!

I am working on it and this week managed to hand out some without HOD noticing, however several then didn’t get returned as if you don’t glue things down in my school they get nicked!

The ones I see most (secondary grammar) are Jack Willis, Harry Potter, Surfy brands and Hype. What a lovely thoughtful Mum you are Smile

toomanyeastereggsurghh · 22/08/2018 07:50

Also a teacher - most of the teenage girls I see are using make up bags as pencil cases.
A few have got fun slogan ones eg. Happy Jackson pencil cases

Mine have always used make up bags from topshop.

luluskiptotheloo · 22/08/2018 08:00

Another vote for typo here. My 14 yr old dd has just chosen one from them, and they are reasonably priced too.
