My sister and I were just discussing shopping. It sounds embarrassing but we don't know how! So what's in your weekly shop? What's in your cupboard that you don't need to buy because it's always there?

OP posts:

In the cupboards I always have:

Rice
Tinned tomatoes
Tinned chickpeas
Sweetcorn
Dried herbs and spices

Sugar
Jam
Marmite
Peanut butter
Pesto

Things that I buy regularly in my food shop:

Milk

Diet Coke
Bagels
Crisps
Apples
Peaches
Avocados
Cheese
Tomatoes

And then I buy whatever I need as ingredients for that week’s meals

sheepsheep · 21/08/2018 17:33

Well you do need to buy it to ensure it is always there, unless you just buy stuff and never use it.

It depends what kind of cooking you do. I have a spice cupboard that is always stocked with herbs and spices, stock cubes, soy sauce, cider vinegar, sesame oil, sunflower and olive oils etc.

I am well stocked with pasta and rice. I buy larger packs not the 500g ones. Spaghetti I buy the 1kg pack, penned the 3kg pack, rice 2kg.

Dried lentils, tinned pulses, baked beans and passata are always there too.

I do a larger shop once a month that lasts two weeks of meals plus the stocking of the above as well as dog food/cleaning products/toilet roll. Then I do a second top up shop for fresher items and the second two week period of meals.

I can do this now, it was harder when I had less money.

sheepsheep · 21/08/2018 17:35

OP do you meal plan?

I menu plan and do the main shop based on that - mostly ingredients and packed lunch items.

Other than that it's the usual suspects of bread (and other bread products), milk, juice, cheese, cereal, yoghurt, eggs, bacon, fruit.

I tend to write down anything we've run out of or I see is running low - butter, herbs and spices, cleaning/laundry products, tissues, etc.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 21/08/2018 17:41

Weekly:
Food for Sunday breakfast (bacon, sausages, potato scones - we have our hens so no need to buy eggs)
A meat for Sunday roast (chicken or gammon - leftovers of which will form basis of at least two more dinners)
Fruit and veg - bought with the pets in mind, but will use for the humans as well
Milk, cream, bread, meat for lunches
Cheese, butter (cheap salted, unsalted, naice salted) if needed

In store cupboards:
Baking stuff, including various types of sugar, flour etc
Herbs and spices, stock cubes, stuffing mix, cornflower
Teas and coffee, hot chocolate etc
Dried Beans and pulses, fajita kits, various pasta shapes, rice,
Pickles, jams, marmalade, Marmite, various sauces (eg Ketchup, sweet chilli,) honey
Tins - esp tomatoes, sweetcorn, fish, corned beef
Oils - olive, extra virgin olive, vegetable
Various vinegars, soy sauce, sesame seed oil, Mirin

Then lots of stuff in freezer: packs of meat, bread, pizzas, chicken carcasses to make stock with

Occasional beef mince for bolognaise or chilli
Salmon filets

Cheddar cheese in various forms + bleu cheese to make salad dressing

Occasional cream cheese or sour cream
Quite a lot of milk

Ocado:
Crisps, cookies, crackers e.g. Ryvita, monster munch, tinned beans/tomato/tuna, loo roll, soap nuts, Warburton's bread, onion bagels, diet coke, sugar free squash to make my SodaStream, frozen hash browns.

Walking up and down the market or Waitrose: All produce

Oh, and we also have cereals in, and plain oats, oat milk and UHT (for yoghurt making)

RoadToRivendell · 21/08/2018 17:44

Eggs. Smoked salmon. Small amount of bacon.

notyourmummy · 21/08/2018 17:47

I do a menu plan for the week and write a list based on that. Things I buy every week are:
Bread
Lettuce
Tomatoes
Cucumber
Fruit and dried fruit (normally raisins)
Sliced ham
Cheese
Yoghurts
Crisps
Biscuits
Fruit juice
Squash

Always have in cupboards:
Plain, SR and bread flour
Eggs
Caster sugar
Custard
Pasta
Passata
Baked beans

Lynne1Cat · 21/08/2018 17:47

I've always got the staple things:
tea, coffee, sugar, cordial.
tinned tomatoes, baked beans, tuna, peas.
jars of sauces for curries, spaghetti bolognese, casseroles.
pasta, rice, flour.
frozen stuff - chicken portions, fish, fishfingers, pizza, oven chips.

I have these things all the time, then buy fresh fruit, veg, meat, fish, dairy stuff.
I buy household stuff each week - laundry capsules, toilet rolls, toothpaste, bleach, shampoo, shower gel, things like that.

MellowMelly · 21/08/2018 19:15

So always in my cupboard are rice, a couple of curry sauces, pasta, pesto, olive oil, chopped tomatoes, couscous, teabags, coffee, sugar, Toblerone and Cadburys Fruit and Nut Grin), two tins of soup, cereal, part baked baguettes, stock cubes and plenty of herbs and spices.

Always in my freezer are chicken thighs, mince, salmon fillets, a couple of pizzas, spare loaf of bread, frozen veg, onion rings, chicken dippers, roast potatoes and

Fridge staples are cheese, butter, ham, eggs, yogurts, milk, chorizo, plum tomatoes, milk, strawberries, melon, salad cream, mayonnaise, ketchup, onions, marmalade and cordial.

I kind of feel that if I was ill and couldn’t get shopping (and Tesco grocery deliveries didn’t exist hehe) that we could survive easily for a week.
