To feel like I have to defend my employment choices

This has been bugging me for a while now, but met up with a group of long standing friends at the weekend.

I am the only person out of the 4 of us that is employed by a company. The 3 of them
are self employed.

I constantly feel like I have to defend the fact I’m ‘employed’. I hear a lot of ‘oh, I could never work for someone else’; ‘I’d hate having to be at an office every day’; ‘I’d hate having a set amount of holiday’; ‘I couldn’t bear being in a corporate environment’...the list goes on.

The same people call me ‘lucky’ regarding things like the fact I don’t have to worry if I’m off sick as get full sick pay; have a company pension; can turn my phone off and not worry about stuff out of hours/when I’m on leave.

FWIW I love my job, have a fab team who i belly laugh with every day, I like the structure, security and benefits of being employed by a fairly large organisation.

AIBU to think they should quit with these comments? I end up feeling like I have to defend my choice to not ‘go it alone’. I also don’t feel like they should call me ‘lucky’ day it’s regards the benefits. Surely it’s all about the fact there’s pros and cons of both set ups and people should respect what works for one may not work for another..

That's odd. I wouldn't put down someone who works for an employer. Horses for courses. Where I work is huge & roughly 50% are contractors. Just say it works for me & change the subject. Do they like getting a rise out of you perhaps?

Maybe, doesn’t feel like that though. It’s almost like they need to justify their own decision to themselves?!
