To give our DD a name that me and her dad pronounce differently?

One of us pronounces it Vi-uh-lut and the other Vi-lut...

Can we still use it?

OP posts:

My friend is Elaine. Her whole family randomly call her EEE lane or e LANE depending on their mood, it seems.

ChateauRouge · 21/08/2018 11:40

So OP, are we talking something like Martha/Marta, or more like Sinjun/SaintJohn?
I think many people have their name pronounced differently by each parent. Everyone has their own twang, inflections etc. (One of the reasons I couldn't call my son Rory, his dad would have had to say "War-wee" Blush)

shumway · 21/08/2018 11:43

My mum says my name wrong. I'm named after her sister as well. She only calls me by my full name when I'm in trouble though so don't hear it often.

llangennith · 21/08/2018 12:11

Violet is a three syllabled name. Pronouncing it as two syllables is lazy speaking.

30hours · 21/08/2018 12:13

Stupid at best.

DorisDances · 21/08/2018 12:59

Violet is a lovely name - please don't be put off using it!

DonttouchthatLarry · 21/08/2018 14:17

My mum is Violet - most people say 'Vi-lut' but my dad's Welsh side of the family always said 'Vio-let'.

And to the pp who said it sounds like 'violent'- her middle name is Ruth so we used to called her Violent Ruthless Grin.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 21/08/2018 14:24

The uh/owe sound is a 'schwa' (sp?) so barely pronounced in many accents. Vi 'uh' let.

Feltcushion · 21/08/2018 14:26

Isn't is Vi o let?

So you are both wrongSmile

Feltcushion · 21/08/2018 14:27

Or vio let

It doesn't have an UH sound?

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 21/08/2018 14:48

The o can be a very short owe or uh sound depending on accent.

LittleKitty1985 · 21/08/2018 14:57

It would bother me. My Dutch DH and I are trying to decide on a name for our son which is spelt and pronounced the same in both Dutch and English - suggestions welcome!

HollowTalk · 21/08/2018 15:02

Introduce whoever says "Vi-lut" to dipthongs.

HesterMacaulay · 21/08/2018 15:13

You're talking about slightly different versions of the same pronunciation. Wouldn't bother me. It's not like Evelyn ( 'e' as in egg) vs 'Ee -vlyn'

00100001 · 21/08/2018 16:09

This is why my child is not called anything like the following

Mia
Tanya
Helena
Eva
Alexander

I went for something more like John. Mark. Emily.

no confusion!

tillytoodles1 · 21/08/2018 16:19

I thought Helene was prounounced Hel-aine, and Helena was Helen-a.

Senac32 · 21/08/2018 16:45

I like the name Violet too - good choice.
I had a friend when I was young and she insisted on saying
Glade -ies for Gladys.
and Penny-lope for Penelope.

halcyondays · 21/08/2018 16:50

yanbu to call her Violet but the person prouncing it as two syllables , not three is wrong.

birdofthenorth · 21/08/2018 17:32

Vi Oh Let or Vi Uh Let - def 3 syllables

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 21/08/2018 17:45

Those aren't really different -- it's just a matter of how much you run the syllables together. If one of you said Vi-uh-lut and one of you said Vee-uh-lut then it might (MIGHT) be an issue. Vi-uh-lut vs. Vi-lut isn't worth worrying about.

LadyFidgetAndHerHandbag · 21/08/2018 18:06

My parents say my name differently due to different accents, it doesn't bother me and never has but one of my friends is weirdly insulted by it.

foxtiger · 21/08/2018 18:31

I also have a name that some people pronounce with two syllables and some with three. My parents preferred it with three and so I do too, because it's what I was brought up to think of as the "right" way, but I think it's probably more usual nowadays to miss out the middle syllable. Left to my own devices I wouldn't make a big fuss about it now, but I've been known by a short form for most of my life so it's rarely an issue anyway.

For what it's worth I prefer Violet with the full three syllables, but my main advice would be only to use it if you can be relaxed about the fact that some people will pronounce it differently. It's not much fun being child who fears their parents will be cross with their friends for getting it wrong.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 21/08/2018 18:54

It's rather like Margaret. Hardly anyone pronounces it with 3 syllables.

MistressoftheYoniverse · 21/08/2018 19:33

my DD1' s name is Kaya we pronounce it Kay-a exactly how it's spelt but she is routinely called Kai-ya like Mai-ya (Maya)...I say go for it...although she might get the nickname Parma or Ham Grin

81Byerley · 21/08/2018 20:31

My nephew is Christian, any one who calls him Crishtyun is likely to get a punch in the mouth from his mum (joking). So if it would bother you that much, don't use it. Violet is my favourite name, and Vilut would irritate me.
