To be a bit over Instagram fashion feeds

Musicforthemasses18 · 20/08/2018 23:36

I know there have been loads of threads on here about Insta influencers so apologies if this has been said before.

Its the Instagram fashion feeds- especially the ‘I’m still trendy over 40 ones’ (I am over 40)- how do people have the time and money to have a new outfit every day and to be bothered to keep up with it all? I literally could not be arsed. There are so many over 40 fashion feeds now and they all seem so self indulgent.
I like clothes- I like a new frock- but how does anyone have a new outfit 365 days a year? I just couldn’t be bothered to spend the time looking for clothes ALL the time.
Maybe I am being totally unreasonable here but it all seems like such utter pointless self indulgent nonsense.

Aibu? Maybe I am out of touch with it all and showing my age!!!!

Yep the long floaty pleated skirts, the slogan tops, the round straw bags, the golden goose trainers, the adidas superstars....all so predictable and boring.

HereForTheLaughs · 21/08/2018 08:57

YANBU. They're becoming so very boring, and not just the over 40 contigent, I feel this way across the whole spectrum. I've realised that I'm beginning to crave content with substance so I've gone old school and read books instead! facepalm

HushabyeMountainGoat · 21/08/2018 09:27

Yanbu. It's not just that bracket either, it's pretty much all of the instagram/youtube lot. When I originally started looking at this sort of stuff it was a hobby that they had alongside a real, normal life where time and money is precious. It was interesting to see what goes into looking good day to day and seeing if there were things I could adopt myself.

Now it's a job for them. They get constantly sponsored, get sent free stuff and some have stylists etc. So nothing like what it was originally. I'd be just as well aspiring to be Holly Willoughby or Kim Kardashian, believing the illusion that they're busy mums who just wake up like that.

YANBU

I’ve got a couple of the big 40+ fashion feeds on my instagram and I noticed the other day they all seem to be wearing the same thing.

They all seem to have been given the same stuff at the same time

I’ve got a couple of smaller feeds which I prefer as they don’t seem to be gifted so much

ElspethFlashman · 21/08/2018 09:42

In fairness, they return 99% if it. If its not a gift they only buy from places with free returns, you'll notice.

So they buy shit loads from ASOS or wherever, do loads of modelling shots at the brick wall at the side of their house, then pack it up and return it.

I also think there's a certain amount of "give them the on trend items" whether they like them personally or not. So they try on every bloody leopard thing they find cos their followers are into it at the moment. But they may not actually care to wear any of it IRL.

It's a business model, they provide links to everything which are affiliate links. Thus, they can afford to buy more the following week whilst waiting for their refund.

So if you regard them more as a try on session, it's probably more realistic.

Piffle11 · 21/08/2018 09:42

@Springersrock I've had this, where they all go to the same Hush/M & S/Lily and Lionel preview event, then my feed is clogged by the same clothes being cooed over by slightly different women.

Musicforthemasses18 · 21/08/2018 09:44

There has been a ‘sought after’ M&S jumpsuit that all of them have clearly been sent to promote it.
I dunno- it all seems really shallow to be so totally obsessed with how you look all the time.

I think it is pathetic and very self indulgent to spend your life stood in front of a mirror perfecting yourself for big fat juicy likes and followers every day. If you're into fashion, maybe share the odd pic but it's just ott now.

Springersrock · 21/08/2018 10:01

I enjoy fashion and I’ve got more cash to spend on clothes now than I ever have so I do like a mooch around Instagram or Pinterest for ideas - plus I live in the arse end of nowhere with a serious lack of decent shops

I’m just bored of seeing the same stuff worn by different people

And those bloody initialled basket bags are doing my head in!

curlywurlyupsydaisy · 21/08/2018 11:19

Slightly off topic but...I like midlifechic very much but she brands herself in the over 40s which, while not categorically wrong, now she has turned 50 and I feel this should be her angle. Over 40's could span 50+ years!

MakeItStopNeville · 21/08/2018 11:28

I’ve unfollowed loads recently. They’ve become more samey, more repetitive and, in one case, so filled with mind numbingly idiotic angst, I had to. Slowly getting my Insta back to what it used to be, laughing at my friend’s photos and comments.

Springersrock · 21/08/2018 11:59

I’ve just been and unfollowed a few

One I’ve followed for years, I think it was more a hobby thing when they first started but their style has changed and it’s not really me any more.

I actually prefer Pinterest for fashion, I pin a load of looks and styles I like without all the ads and crap that goes with Instagram

WipsGlitter · 21/08/2018 12:08

I agree the companies need to realise there's no point in sending them all all the same stuff at the same time because it just seems so fake. Seven Boot Lane was particularly bad for this.

thornyhousewife · 21/08/2018 12:16

YANBU. It's lame.

I can't imagine ever asking someone to take a photo of me in my outfit even once, let alone daily.

AtHomeInFrance · 21/08/2018 12:51

Yes. Another MidLifeChic fan here. She writes with integrity, intelligence and an understanding of her subject. Her taste is not necessarily mine but I look forward to and appreciate her posts. Oh and she manages to work full time, raise three gorgeous boys and all without banging on about how tough it is working one day a week and doing what everyone else is doing, raising the kids they chose to have. Far too much middle class entitlement rubbish floating around at the moment, hope the bubble bursts soon.
Also a big fan of PoppysStyle and A Life To Style - both of whom also have something to say beyond the saccharine bleatings and hashtags of insta fashion.

curlywurlyupsydaisy · 21/08/2018 13:33

Absolutely, I find her very credible with real substance behind what she says. Each post is well researched and a pleasure to read - no grabby hashtag crap. But I do think she needs to be branded over 50's rather than over 40's

sweettutu · 22/08/2018 14:08

If you like fashion, try to find fashion industry people who have accounts vs the influencers?
