To think these radiators are ugly

whollyboloney · 20/08/2018 15:38

We need to replace some old radiators and I'm getting quotes from heating engineers. By default they're all expecting to install what they call "standard modern radiators" that look like this. I realise I can have whatever radiators I want, but before I challenge the "standard" I just wanted to check whether other people agree with me that they're ugly or whether I'm just being unreasonably precious.

OP posts:

I have that in my bedroom and it's great for drying socks and undies along the top.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 20/08/2018 16:18

The modern ones aren’t as pretty as older ones but they are more efficient so you don’t have to have a whole wall of radiator to get the same heat output.

cmlover · 20/08/2018 16:20

I have these and I hate them. they are sooo thick and long and take up room, all my rooms have to be in a set lay out because if them. they don't blame in ethier.

Jupiter9 · 20/08/2018 16:20

They look ok. ☺️

Oblomov18 · 20/08/2018 16:23

Agree. Seem to be the standard these days and I think they are pretty ugly.

PickAChew · 20/08/2018 16:27

We're looking to replace one of those that has begun to corrode with one like cloud tree posted. It would suit this house so much better. Additionally, we have an absolutely useless single panel radiator in a bay window in another room and it's completely inadequate for the size of room. We've found a few people who adapt column radiators to fit around a bay.

We'll keep the boring ones in the bedrooms, mind.

Livinglavidal0ca · 20/08/2018 16:30

What a weird thread Grin my mum has those radiators! They’re filthy inside, no idea how you’d clean inside all the little bits all the way through.

The ones the other user posted are the ones we had at school!

oreosoreosoreos · 20/08/2018 16:34

They look like bog standard screw fix rads.

DH likes to play 'spot the cheapo rads' in the £££££ developed houses - nothing wrong with them, but we think it's a bit cheeky to put the cheapest rads in a house costing £million +!

You can get some quite funky rads if you want a more modern look, but they do cost quite a bit more. We've just replaced ours with the more traditional style linked to above - it's a period property and they look so much better then the others that were in.

AllAtHome · 20/08/2018 16:38

I prefer them to the ones cloud tree linked to (they would just blend into the background and be forgotten about).ive never understood 'show radiators'. The cloudtree ones are definitely old school radiators.

NonaGrey · 20/08/2018 16:38

You can have any kind of radiator you are prepared to pay for.

They are quoting these as “standard” because they are, in fact, standard.

You can pay extra and get something else.

OllyBJolly · 20/08/2018 16:40

These are the ones I have (OP's pic) and yes they're ugly. The bit under the grille attracts dust etc and the grille itself is a bugger to get off. (and to get back on again if you do manage to jemmy it off).

I don't like the old-fashioned ones unless they're in an older property.

Might look at underfloor heating for downstairs. Radiators upstair are good for warming your clothes in winter. But not aesthetically pleasing!

TheresTheFlyingFuckIDontGive · 20/08/2018 16:43

We have a mixture of radiators in our house (there when we moved in) and, although I can't remember what the other one look like (as they're just radiators!), we have one like cloudtree linked to and, although it's really good at throwing out heat, it's awful to put clothes on. They just slide off unless you wedge them on it.

serbska · 20/08/2018 16:45

Personally I prefer Barlo Round-Top Type 21 Double Panel Plus Convector

lexer · 20/08/2018 16:46

OP - they ARE ugly.

These however are a thing of beauty and sophistication

It's the same as anything interior design related in that its entirely down to personal taste.

Some might never even notice their ugly radiators, others would prefer to spend a bit of money on something they find a little more attractive. Some might be happy with cheap builders grade metal door handles, some would want to upgrade to rosewood doorknobs. Some like magnolia trade paint others want nuanced whites from farrow and ball. Just tell them what you want installing and they will adjust the price.

Ginkypig · 20/08/2018 16:47

They are the ones Iv got.
I can't really care enough about them to worry, they are there to do a job.

Ultimately if your getting it done you can choose any you want.

Or get them and get some nice covers to put over them.

serbska · 20/08/2018 16:48

I just have a bog standard house though. No period features or super modern finishes to worry about.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 20/08/2018 16:53

My dad has the ones Cloudtree has linked to......horrendous dust traps!

I have the standard ones and they stay nice and dust free....

TatianaLarina · 20/08/2018 17:01

That’s radiator covers are for.

To think these radiators are ugly
cloudtree · 20/08/2018 17:03

radiator covers do block some heat though and by the time you've paid for a radiator cover on top of the cost of the standard radiator you could buy a radiator in the style you prefer Confused

Jillyjollyjandy · 20/08/2018 17:05

Ugly.
I removed the one in my front room and put a cast iron one in instead but it was £££ to do the whole house.

AllAtHome · 20/08/2018 17:07

I’ve never seen a radiator cover that I’ve liked Grin I would much rather see the radiator.

TatianaLarina · 20/08/2018 17:08

Not noticeably cloud, and there are no radiator styles I prefer - they’re all ugly.

AviatorShades · 20/08/2018 17:08

I painted ours the same colour as the walls. Chilli pepper I think it wasGrin

cloudtree · 20/08/2018 17:09

I have radiator covers on two (ugly) radiators and they definitely block heat.
