To have complained about smelly colleague?

The person who I sit next to in my office has odour issues, which are generally unpleasant (sweaty/unwashed smell). Today the smell was so strong that I could not tolerate sitting next to them and have made excuses to go and sit elsewhere (need to work closely with another colleague today).

I have raised this with thier line manager who has in turn had a word. This is not the first time that this has been an issue and was previously raised by the person who sat next to them in our old office.

Apparently they did not take this news very well and is now rather aggressively bashing around at thier desk being a bit of an arse. Caught this person staring at me at few times since the chat and I can almost feel them burning holes in the back of my head.

I feel a bit bad, it cannot be easy to hear, but to be honest I don’t think it’s fair that I have to put up with it to spare someone else’s feelings.

it cannot be easy to hear - for the second time. I guess the stinker in question assumed that the previous complainant was just too damned fussy, and didn't bother dealing with it. Hopefully they'll start to get the message now.
It's a desperately awkward situation, OP, but FWIW I don't think you should feel too bad.

You did the right thing, it’s unfair on you or whoever else to sit next to this smelly colleague. Don’t understand how they can slam about and stare at you when they can’t sort out their own personal hygiene. They sound gross, YANBU.

I work in HR and have had to deal with this issue before. Initially the Line Manager had a quiet word, then when things didn't improve, I went with the LM and we had a formal meeting with the guy. Still no improvement so I took it to disciplinary and he got a formal written warning. He sorted himself out for about 6 weeks, but then started coming in stinking of BO again. Eventually, I referred him to Occupational Health to make sure there wasn't an underlying health issue going on, but eventually I had to dismiss him.

You are entitled to work in an environment free of offensive odours, and I strongly suspect that your Organisation's Code of Conduct will have a paragraph about acceptable dress and hygiene standards.

Don't feel bad about it, he or she needs to have a wash - it shouldn't be your problem!
