does this really solve most things ? it seems to get suggested al ot.
i understand that lots of people like this kind of thing but the thought of a complete stranger massaging me [bleugh] it would be as relaxing as listening to nails being dragged down a chalk board.
am i billy no mates in disliking the idea ?

I wouldn't find it relaxing either, just uncomfortable and boring.

ShotsFired · 20/08/2018 14:39

Well no of course you aren't alone. I can't even stand baths so the idea of spending a whole day at one big bath with lots of strangers in borrowed dressing gowns is baffling to me.

But horses for courses. Some people think it is a cure for all ills - the probably wouldn't think much of what I would do to relax

liz70 · 20/08/2018 14:43

No, I'd hate a spa day too. I'd be happy to spend a month or two day and night in a nice hotel, with a pool, with just myself to please, where I could read, watch films or programmes, knit, crochet, travel about the area, take a dip etc. But I'd hate the thought of a massage - no thank you.

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 20/08/2018 14:45

My idea of hell having strangers touching me all day! I can kind of see the appeal for other people but it's not for me

MaryShelley1818 · 20/08/2018 14:46

Oh I love a Spa Day - one of my favourite ever things to do. Massages are sheer bliss, love jacuzzi bubbles/sauna/steam etc

Can understand why people don’t like them though - we can’t all like the same things.
Seems a reasonable suggestion though as mostly they’re seen as a relaxing activity.

Gnomesoftheglaaxy · 20/08/2018 14:49

For me a spa day doesn't usually involve massage (can take or leave it) but lots of relaxation. In and out of the different rooms/areas, heat, cold, meditation, maybe a bit of reading and swimming, but most of all total disconnection from the outside world. Bliss Smile

QuoadUltra · 20/08/2018 14:52

I always wonder about this. Not cos it wouldn’t be nice, but because it is quite expensive to go to spas.

Lightsonthewater · 20/08/2018 14:53

I’m with you OP. Only did it once with a friend, felt compelled to try all the facilities and most just felt gimmicky. The treatment I chose was a mud Rasul chamber and my skin and hair did feel good after that. But if I wanted one again I’d book only that and literally be in and out in between the tip run and the supermarket shop

kaytee87 · 20/08/2018 14:55

I love a spa day.

Tbh I see more threads like this and people joking about it than I do people actually seriously suggesting it.

drastard · 20/08/2018 14:55

A 90 min massage and a mani pedi is all I like.

You don't like the "thought" of it but have never had a massage? Try new things, or don't.

It's up to you.

I agree with you the DH got drunk = have a spa day replies are stupid.

BarbaraofSevillle · 20/08/2018 14:56

You don't have to have a massage at a spa day. You can have no treatments at all. It's all about the hot bubbly water for me.

I had one a few weeks ago when the weather was gloriously hot. They have several indoor and outdoor bubble pools, various steam rooms, inside and outside lounging areas, you get a nice lunch with wine and there's a dark relaxation pool and sleep loungers for a snooze afterwards.

I also spent a good few hours lazing around in the sun with a book, interspersed with a swim or two. It was like being on holiday abroad in a 5 star resort for the day.

Kleinzeit · 20/08/2018 14:56

does this really solve most things ? it seems to get suggested al ot.

It's just shorthand for "go spend a day doing whatever you want to do instead of looking after other people, and leave your DP to do all the caring for once". If your idea of fun is going out on your bike at 6am and cycling through mud til 10pm then that's your personal MumsNet "spa day".

BlairWaldorfsHeadband · 20/08/2018 14:57

I like them but you’re perfectly entitled not to!

Hazardswan · 20/08/2018 15:03

I don't think I've ever seen anyone on MN suggest a spa day as anything other than a puss take. Threads like this is the usual attitude.

Shame. I love a spa day! It's like a mini holiday away from it all.

Rainbunny · 20/08/2018 15:09

Wow, I didn't know people who hate being massaged existed until now! Really?

Massages are wonderful, especially after particularly gruelling physical exertion. I've enjoyed spas in Japan (Onsen) and South Korea (jjimjilbang) and even Russian bathhouses/sauna (Banya). I live in California now and spas are numerous and cheap, they range from Korean day spas (no fuss, brutally efficient massages and scrubs) to luxury hotel resorts and I love them all. If you don't like massages you should at least try saunas and steam rooms, my favourite place has a parilka and a cold plunge to use in between - it's heaven.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 20/08/2018 16:23

I just love lying by a pool with a book. The rest of it I can take or leave! But it's whatever floats your boat!

paintinmyhairAgain · 20/08/2018 16:44

dh does a good massage but that is the only person i'd let do it ! Smile,

hazard i get it now the have a spa day piss take is up there with phone 101 and ltb - i'm sooo innocent Grin
