About my lodger snoring!

snoopydogg · 19/08/2018 23:27

My lodger sleeps two floors below me and I can hear him snoring!

This happens a lot. Usually I will go down and bang on his door which is presumably enough to wake him up. Have already tried that and the snoring has just started again!

Is this enough of an offence to justify kicking him out?

Update: lodger and I have spent time together this evening, I have replayed the recording of the noise to him and tried to insist he gets a doctor appointment but he flat out refuses. Seems to think it's funny and normal for a man to snore so loud.

So now I'm at a loss - do I evict him and potentially get someone worse?

I'm just getting into bed and the snoring has started again!

Evict him and find someone else

LeftRightCentre · 20/08/2018 23:18

You need to evict him. Your sleep is precious.

Potentially get someone worse?
Worse than someone you can hear snoring through 2 floors? I’d say that chance is very slim!

snoopydogg · 20/08/2018 23:21

Also he doesn't remember me banging on his door at all, really I don't see the problem with this!? It's not to threaten him but just to disturb him enough that he changes positions! It quite often works.

Give him notice if you want. But I agree with Pengggwn that banging in his door in the night really isn't on. (Neither is recording him or demanding he see his GP btw).

NoSquirrels · 20/08/2018 23:23

If he thinks it’s just hilarious to keep his landlady up by snoring and isn’t prepared to even pretend he’ll try to sort it, I’d give him notice. He’s showing you contempt.

snoopydogg · 20/08/2018 23:25

FWIW we are also friends (known each other for about 6 years) so whilst on the one hand I can be a bit more honest with him about seeing a gp or being annoying, on the other it might be awkward if I ask him to leave.

Of all the issues I tried to foresee this was not one!

Because we are friends stuff like recording the noise is a bit of a joke - maybe the point I was making to him got lost. Obviously I'm just recording the sound from my room and not actually recording him asleep.

Your next talk with him needs to include a date, within the next 7 days. That is the date he can expect you to give him notice, unless the snoring is sorted.

Because he’s young, I’d also hand him a list of snoring ‘solutions’ for him to work through. I’d also point out to him that the hassle of finding new digs and moving all his stuff (and risking not finding such a reasonable landlord again) is far worse than getting it sorted. And far more expensive.

Sounds like laziness might be a motivator for him...even if consideration for others or his own health aren’t.

OakElmAsh · 20/08/2018 23:30

Bloody hell it's hard enough putting up with snoring from a DH or partner, having sleep disturbed by a lodger is more than I'd be willing to put up with

NoSquirrels · 20/08/2018 23:57

Ah, OK. If you’re friends it puts a different slant on it.

He’s just not realised you’re properly serious. Be serious. Tell him you are sleep-deprived and upset. That you’re considering options if he can’t address it. That it’s your home and you’d rather manage withit the money than without a good night’s sleep.

But please do also reconsider the ear plugs. You’d still hear a fire shark etc it just takes the edge off enough that you can falls asleep.

NoSquirrels · 20/08/2018 23:59

A fire shark? Ooh! Not sure if you’d hear them- sharks are silent, I guess? But a fire alarm would be OK Grin

Please can you tell me what antisnoring aids are available?? I want to stab my DH most nights.... 😰😳

eniledam · 21/08/2018 11:23

@SmiledWithTheRisingSun Snoreeze do a whole range of antisnoring aids for all types of snoring, nasal, throat and sleep apnoea! My DH used to use the throat spray (which was fab) but then got diagnosed with sleep apnoea so he uses an oral device now and I don't hear a peep out of him. The aids are in Boots and on their website.
