To ask about dummies for breastfed babies?

Looking for recommendations as I'd like to try one. My LO wakes frequently and gals back to sleep as soon as my nipple is in his mouth...hoping a dummy will help settle him back to sleep as nipples are getting sore!

Just try any, I don't think there are any specialist ones for BFing. I used Avent ones whilst BFing but all my babies have only ever accepted dummies for a matter of weeks/a few months anyway.

My first loved a Tommee Tippie and my second loved a Mam. But to be fair, they will take anything if those makes aren't available.

ThePinkOcelot · 19/08/2018 19:29

I used the orthodontic dummies on my BF babies. I think they sometimes used my boobs as comfort only and a dummy combatted that.

Aprilshowersinaugust · 19/08/2018 19:29

Ds was 4-12 and had the MAM 0-2 size for months!!

Fireworks91 · 19/08/2018 19:29

I always had luck with Avent when little, as they got bigger they'd take any.

Birdsgottafly · 19/08/2018 19:29

My DD used Mam for both of her children, at the start, but they moved onto Tommy Tippee.

snackarella · 19/08/2018 19:30

Ah ok! Thanks. I assumed the shape of the teet might matter ...but thanks I'll try a few x

Watching with interest... I can't take mine to take any for anymore than a second or two..

WeeM · 19/08/2018 19:31

I was told the old fashioned cherry teat ones are best for bf babies as they most resemble a nipple shape but my dc wouldn’t take that or any other I tried! Just spat them out-if it wasn’t a boob, wasn’t interested!

stressedtiredbuthappy · 19/08/2018 19:32

Good luck, my daughter is still bf at nearly 2 1/2.
She loves a dummy too, but no way will she take one over a nipple.
Start them young I suppose get them used to it.

WeeM · 19/08/2018 19:33

When I say best, I just mean more likely to take it and not spit out, but didn’t work for me

KathrynOfArrogance · 19/08/2018 19:34

My son will take mam and nuk, he's very fussy will only take a dummy if overtired but those two go down well x

Pompom42 · 19/08/2018 19:35

When I breastfed first DD there was a silicone NUBY one that was recommended for breastfed babies. It pointed upwards into the roof of her mouth intending to mimic the nipple when you feed as it points upwards in the mouth slightly when first latching. Not sure if they still sell them

snackarella · 19/08/2018 19:39

Thanks all - off to the shops tomorrow - wish me luck! I'm fairly sure he won't take one but worth a go

MAM dummies are the ones I used. He had one in the hospital, bf for 13 months.

TheLette · 19/08/2018 20:33

We tried a few but the only one that worked was a Nuk latex one - apparently they feel a bit more natural than a silicon one.

Goldmandra · 19/08/2018 20:37

Alternatively, you could cut your little fingernail short and let him suck on that instead. Once he's settled you gently break the suction and remove your finger without disturbing him.

BunsOfAnarchy · 19/08/2018 20:48

Following. Ive tried;
MAM 0-2
MAM 0-6
NUK 0-6
NUK 0-2
Nuby
Avent
Tommee Tippee
Dr Browns

She still wont take any (ugh)

Ive given up now though.

mehhh · 19/08/2018 21:04

My dd loves avent... she hated tt as a newborn but will use avent tt and mam now x

PersisFord · 19/08/2018 21:07

My amazing friend who used to foster newborns got my tricky baby to take one by giving it to him warm from the steriliser. Worked a treat. I think they were avent ones

knowledgeofnone · 19/08/2018 21:18

Both of mine liked the Tesco own brand ones with the full circle like nib

Sparrowlegs248 · 19/08/2018 21:25

Dc2 has a dummy and is bf. He has the cheap tommee tippee ones, with the round yellowy course teat. Dc1 would never take one. It does help hugely, no issues with nipple confusion and he only has it for sleep or in the car sometimes.

Mum2jenny · 19/08/2018 21:26

Never did dummies as my dc didn't accept any substitute

KathrynOfArrogance · 21/08/2018 16:28

@PersisFord really wish you had put "worked a teat" Grin
