To live in my car/camp full time??

28 and live in a shit area surrounded by drug users, alcoholics and the unemployed. I’m by no means judging but I just don’t fit in here at all and I begrudge spending a fortune in rent for somewhere I hate.

I’m actually debating living in my car/camping full time.

Slept in my car many times before and while it is small- it would be comfortable with bedding. I’d find safe areas to park up that wouldn’t cause nuisance for anyone else.

I’d cook my meals at work, charge phones/tablets at work. Shower when I go to the gym and do my laundry when I visit my parents every weekend.

I’d do it for a year or two which means I can save enough money for a house deposit

Sounds like an utterly miserable experience. Can you move home with parents for six months or flat share to keep costs down?

Snickerdoodles · 19/08/2018 14:52

Would you be able to move to a different area that you prefer instead?

RabbitsAreTasty · 19/08/2018 14:54

Wouldn't it be a problem to be person of no fixed address?

Have you looked at living in other areas?

PeanutButterCheesecake · 19/08/2018 14:57

It'd be grim but doable now - in November it wouldn't. What about a cheap house share (assuming you don't already) enabling you to save, but not as quickly?

AbsentmindedWoman · 19/08/2018 14:59

How would you pee in the middle of the night? Or make a late night hot drink?

What job do you do that you can cook meals at work?

It would grind me down in about two weeks.

NoSquirrels · 19/08/2018 14:59

Caravan park?

I don’t think living in your car FT is a great plan. Far too risky - there are limited ‘safe places’ where you won’t eventually draw attention of one sort or another.

Sitranced · 19/08/2018 15:00

Do it in a van a car is too cramped. Check out the Indie Projects on YouTube, loads of people showing their self built homes on wheels.

Nancy91 · 19/08/2018 15:01

What if you lose your job?

Fatbelliedgirl · 19/08/2018 15:02

What if your car breaks down or gets written off?

thousandpapercranes · 19/08/2018 15:04

I think it’s doable as long as you have a decent van type vehicle to begin with. Not sure I’d be able to deal with it especially in the winter. An old friend of mine travelled around New Zealand and Australia whilst living in a car.

RoseWhiteTips · 19/08/2018 15:04

No. That sounds like an awful way to live.

Whatsthisbear · 19/08/2018 15:06

Imagine waking up in the middle of the night to a face pressed up against your window.
You could end up with hyperthermia in the winter.

ImAIdoot · 19/08/2018 15:07

I have done this.

My advice is do what you have to do to get away from the shit area, but never bank on being able to sleep in your car the next night, let alone 2 years.

mimibunz · 19/08/2018 15:07

Definitely could do it in a van but make sure you stay in safe areas.

HoleyCoMoley · 19/08/2018 15:08

It's not going to be safe is it, you could get disciplined at work for charging your mobiles. Do your parents know you are in this position, you would be making yourself homeless which can cause all sorts of issues. Could you afford to rent a roomshare somewhere or move In with your parents. What sort of work do you have.

jay55 · 19/08/2018 15:10

What if it gets broken in to or stolen?
You’d be very vulnerable.

ThatchersCold · 19/08/2018 15:10

A car would be shite but yes totally doable in a van. Doesn’t even need to be a particularly big van. Join the group self build campervans on fb for ideas.

ThatchersCold · 19/08/2018 15:13

And a lot of campsites do cheap rates for people living there long term - I know of one which a few of my mates have lived at which was £30 a week in the winter. Then you’d have access to showers, washing up facilities etc.

Asdf12345 · 19/08/2018 15:13

May very well be workable depending on your job.

infact depending on your line of work it could be advantageous if you spend lots of time on the road or cover lots of sites, whilst opening up options for extra work.

EmpressOfSpartacus · 19/08/2018 15:13

If you're sleeping in your car what would you do for a toilet? And you'd still need an address - would that be your parents' house?

Poisongirl81 · 19/08/2018 15:13

rent on a caravan park?

Poisongirl81 · 19/08/2018 15:14

or tent

PurpleTigerLove · 19/08/2018 15:16

Go home to your parents .

LeftRightCentre · 19/08/2018 15:20

YANBU. I'd research it. Use your parents' address for a fixed abode.
