To ask for help now that blonde highlights no longer cover white hair at front of face

Hi

Really hope you can help.

Am early 40s and up until now have been getting half a head of blonde highlights done approx every 8 weeks. I have long hair which is in reasonably ok nick.

My natural hair colour is dark blonde, but I have a fair no of white strands which the highlights have concealed until recently.

The main problem is the fine tufts of hair around my face/hairline - these are grey/white and the highlights don’t seem to do anything to conceal them.

I’ve walked out of the Aveda salon the past couple of times now wondering what the hell I’ve spent money on as the white bits are still glaringly obvious, even though the rest of my hair looks ok.

I don’t know what to do. My hair is my one big expense but it doesn’t look right and I’m so self conscious of these very ageing white tufts.

What should I be doing? Because asking for highlights is not the answer.

Please help.

Loving that, Ta1kin. I couldn't say that as my gran was pure white (by 30) and both my parents were grey but completely different shades to one another and I'm different again.

Great; thanks BlueRabbit, Kaytee, Stylist and DarthLipgloss - really appreciate.

I have my roots done every 4 weeks now & highlights less regularly. Ask your hairdresser to do a root touch up in your natural blonde colour.

I'm like you & have no intention of going grey ever anytime soon & if that makes me not being able to accept the ageing process, so be it!! Grin

Ta1kinpeace · 19/08/2018 19:25

willow
How much does that cost ?
Genuine question as I have long grey hair so avoid hairdressers Grin

Ask your hairdresser to do your roots in your blonde colour and if it grows out too much in between appointments use a DIY root touch-up in blonde/mid-blonde. I’m 67 and am I going to go grey naturally? - hell no! I KNOW it makes me look older, I’ve tried it briefly and it added decades.
A good hairdresser will advise on the best colour and highlights for your complexion and these will change as you get older. A harsh dark dye job against older skin is an obvious no-no but it doesn’t sound as if that’s what you would do anyway.

any photos OP?

I get asked about my hair quite regularly but ladies my age (40s). So I assume I must be doing something right. I have naturally curly hair that’s a medium brown with huge amounts of grey/white. I have three colours put through my hair four times a year. Brown, caramel and peroxide blonde. This somehow seems to give me quite a natural look.

I’ll see if I can find a photo.

Ah, sarahsiddons A legend in my town

I still struggle to understand why light hair makes women look old
but makes men look established
women moan about ageism and then stride straight into it
we look fab with silver hair
our hairlines do not recede like the men
our hair stays long and shiny till our 70s
why mess with it ?

I have some grey around my temples which I treat with Grecian 2000.
If you apply it regularly it returns your hair to its natural colour. It's marketed at men but works for women too.
It's much cheaper then hair products marketed at women of course.
I have no intention of going grey, ever! It puts years on you!

Brummiegirl15 · 19/08/2018 19:52

I completely get it. Totally.

I'm 41 and have exactly the same problem, I'm coming through White on the regrowth and I hate it. Absolutely hate it.

For my appointments I have highlights and a root tint done, so the grey is covered, but the highlights stop it being blocky and disguises the re-growth.

In between salon visits, I used to use L'Oréal magic touch but find it quite yellow as I'm a very pale blonde now. I've now chamged to Color Wow root powder in platinum and it's fab!

I agree with some others though, you have to be careful with some blondes as you can look brassy and too yellow and that does scream aging. I use a purple shampoo every now and again to tone it down

But ignore the comments about embracing the grey, I think it looks fab, but the silver grey I've seen looking fab are usually out of a bottle. So why bother?

This is as depressing as the botox thread. Women could change the world, but we're too busy painting our hair and faces with chemicals, injecting toxic shit and dieting.

CSIblonde · 19/08/2018 21:00

I'm with you OP. I'm never going grey, my hair is the one thing I like about myself. Go to your hairdresser & ask re the white bits. My highlights are a nice natural looking mid blonde & cover the few greys which I always make a point of saying I want to not show. If my hairdresser can achieve that & yours can't, maybe you are better getting a consult elsewhere.

Boulshired · 19/08/2018 22:03

I have dyed my hair well before going grey, not seen my untreated natural hair for 30 years. judging by the amount of women in the salon I use many of the women embracing grey are embarrassing grey from a bottle. If I went Philip schofield grey I’d probably go for it too, not just uneven random clumps.

justilou1 · 19/08/2018 22:48

I’m 46 and starting to see some grey sneaking through into the front of my dark blonde hair which (ironically) I finally stopped bleaching about three years ago when I realized that I liked my natural color better. My hair is naturally a dark, beige-blonde (rather than gold) so I hope it will blend, otherwise I’m going to have to get foils again, aren’t I? Meanwhile, was whining about it to my best friend who looks like Snow White at 50 yrs of age told me off because her hair has been white since she was 15.... The dilemmas of modern life.

MaybeDoctor · 19/08/2018 22:56

Well, this thread has saved me some money as I am 43 and had been thinking of treating myself to a trip to my local Aveda salon and a half-head of highlights!
