to use out of date pancake mix?

Braving AIBU, be nice :)

DB wants to use pancake mix (packet powder) which went out of date in September 2017.

Is this OK, or are we all going to die?

Of course it's OK! It'll probably be OK in 10 years!

MsVestibule · 18/08/2018 11:58

Just check it doesn't smell musty.

Tinuviel · 18/08/2018 12:00

YABU for using pancake mix at all!! Pancakes are just flour, eggs and milk/water.

I even saw a 'mix' once that said 'Just add an egg and milk'. So a very expensive bag of flour, then.

dementedpixie · 18/08/2018 12:00

It's a best before date. That means the quality may deteriorate but it's not dangerous to eat

DolorestheNewt · 18/08/2018 12:01

It'll be fine. Also easy to make from scratch if you are too queasy at the idea of a passed date!

Bubbaduck · 18/08/2018 12:01

I assume it's a "best before" date, not a "use by"? If so you'll be fine, it just might not take quite as good as one before the best before date.

Bubbaduck · 18/08/2018 12:01

*taste, not take

StorminaTCut · 18/08/2018 12:02

Fine, its dry.

RedneckStumpy · 18/08/2018 12:02

It’s fine probably powdered milk, eggs, flour and sugar.

All powdered ingredients that will last a million years

DolorestheNewt · 18/08/2018 12:02

Precisely! My stepson asked me if I make pancakes from scratch on one occasion when I was planning to do them for breakfast. I said yes. It transpired that "from scratch", to him, meant a bottle of premix that you fry yourself, rather than buying ready-made pancakes in plastic.

ploppymoodypants · 18/08/2018 12:03

Will be fine. I wouldn’t hesitate. But then I nearly ate some 2 day out of date chicken this week 😁

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 18/08/2018 12:03

What tinuviel said, YABVVU Grin

But no, if it smells/tastes ok you’ll be fine!

Oysterbabe · 18/08/2018 12:04

It will be absolutely fine.

AlpacaPicnic · 18/08/2018 12:04

I did recently, it was fine. Not the greatest pancakes ever made but they were ok!

Mymycherrypie · 18/08/2018 12:05

I wouldn’t eat pancake mix even if it was in date so yes yabu

Cornettoninja · 18/08/2018 12:06

Best before is the one you can use leeway on. For powders if it’s not clumped it solid I’ll give it a go.

Oh my, this is most successful thread ever! An AIBU as well ;)

Seriously, DB making pancakes from scratch involves every pan and cooking utensil in the house. Packet is cleaner.

If I never post again, we all died.

LoniceraJaponica · 18/08/2018 13:11

But you wouldn't use any more utensils with a mix than you would with flour, eggs and milk Confused

A mixing bowl, measuring jug, whisk, pan and spatula is all you need.

yousignup · 18/08/2018 13:14

You don't know DB... he is capable of making a mess whatever he does. I will get him to join MN so he can mansplain why packet is better :)

Seriously, I do agree with you. Same as Yorkshire puddings - it's really easy.
