Free white fillings if you breast feed

But will cost you if you formula feed your baby (apparently) due to new dental regulations introduced.

Just keep that in mind when, if you need a filling and you've just had a baby, the dentist randomly asks you if you breastfeed or formula feed your baby.

OP posts:
MoistCantaloupe · 18/08/2018 06:32

Isn’t it because your only option is a white filing when breast feeding?

NoProbLlama78 · 18/08/2018 06:48

breast feeding can affect the mother's teeth so it may be because of that.

NicoAndTheNiners · 18/08/2018 06:52

Is it because the mercury in the black fillings might pass to the baby in breast milk?

I remember when I was pregnant I needed a filling and reading the mercury ones might not be safe. Could have one of those for free with my matb1 form but had to pay £80 for a safe white one. Which I was cross about.

Biologifemini · 18/08/2018 06:54

I think it is due to the mercury rather than aesthetics!

Jinglesplodge · 18/08/2018 07:13

Oh FFS it'll be because of concerns about it affecting the baby, not some sort of favouritism. OP you sound like you've got an axe to grind.

BlueBug45 · 18/08/2018 07:16

It's due to mercury.

My dentist has always given me the option to pay for white fillings if I need any of mine replaced. The mercury is actually worse for her and the dental nurse's health who have to work with it daily, than for any patient.

Oh and I was reading some newspaper reports a while ago that the government doesn't provide enough funding for every adult to have NHS dental treatment - so if you can get some you are lucky.

Vitalogy · 18/08/2018 07:17

The mercury fillings should be finished full stop!

restingbemusedface · 18/08/2018 07:19

Of course they aren’t going to give mercury fillings to women who are breastfeeding. I know women who have had them removed before TTC.

FiestaThenSiesta · 18/08/2018 07:21

“due to new dental regulations introduced.”

Can you link?

This reads just like that other thread... post on mumsnet about dental fillings and start a breastfeeding/formula feeding controversy. Be outraged, etc that you spend more money if you breastfeed.

FiestaThenSiesta · 18/08/2018 07:22

Didn’t breastfeed

InfiniteSheldon · 18/08/2018 07:22

Is that you Debbie?

BikeRunSki · 18/08/2018 07:28

I had an NHS white filling when I was pg. it’s to do with mercury affecting the baby. Presumably the same with bf mothers, not some kind of reward for bf mothers!

TigerBreadAddict · 18/08/2018 07:31

New regulations bda.org/news-centre/dental-amalgam-new-regulations-from-1-july-2018

LillyBugg · 18/08/2018 07:36

It's obviously for safety rather than aesthetics. And presumably white fillings cost the nhs more than metal ones. So if you want to waste precious nhs resources by lying in regards to how you feed your baby then you carry right on.

I can not believe that even fillings are being used to bash breastfeeding mothers. I know it's not been explicitly said but this is clearly the intent of the OP. Ffs can we not all just have our dental treatment and feed our babies however we wish guilt free??

LillyBugg · 18/08/2018 07:36

Oh and you didn't actually ask. But yes. YABU.

Rednaxela · 18/08/2018 07:38

Amalgam has been banned in other countries because it is toxic.

This change for breastfeeding mothers just exposes the reality of that toxicity. It should be banned full stop.

Fluteytootey · 18/08/2018 07:40

I’ve just paid £100 to have a white filling even though I’m breastfeeding an only 9 months post partum. Should I not have had to pay?

Billben · 18/08/2018 07:41

Are you trying to shit stir OP?

A simple google search would have educated you about this matter.

jarhead123 · 18/08/2018 07:41

It'll just cause people to lie - how do they prove how you feed your baby?

pinkmagic1 · 18/08/2018 07:42

They only do white fillings for children as well now. My dentist told me it is a recent ruling.

Helloisitteaurlookingfor · 18/08/2018 07:43

Fluteytootey

No, dental care is free for (approx) a year after the birth of your child with your medical exemption card. Plus the info above about white fillings and breastfeeding means you didn't have to.

Dmacka75 · 18/08/2018 07:44

@Fluteytootey the regulations came in on 1st July, so if it was an NHS dental practice you shouldnt have had to pay

Helloisitteaurlookingfor · 18/08/2018 07:44

LillyBugg

Completely agree with everything you just said.

Oysterbabe · 18/08/2018 07:46

Fluteytootey Don't you have an exemption card?

Nice attempt at shit stirring OP.

Dmacka75 · 18/08/2018 07:48

@jarhead123 the breastfeeding question should be added into the medical history questions you are asked before beginning an exam or any treatment so that the dentist has that info before the question of which type of material to use for a filling comes up, people would then be less likely to lie
