Why do people have to check their phones in the gym?

This happens all the time at my gym - someone settles down on a piece of kit, takes out their phone and just sits there for ages, like they're in an armchair, looking at their screen. Or does a bit over exercising, but then goes into their phone. Half the people in the gym were at it today. I 'n just thankful that you can't text and swim. Seriously though, what's wrong with people that they can't do an activity without having to look at their phones every few minutes?

Music, training app etc

I have my workout listed in an email on my phone, so I need to check sometimes to see what I've still got to do.

Teenagemaw · 18/08/2018 07:41

My workout is on there and I rest 1 min between sets. I prefer to have a wee stretch and look at my phone and stay put because if i get up the guy standing staring at the side of me will steal my machine.

Of course the gym is ghastly (my dear, the smell, the people)
so don't make it worse for everyone by occupying a machine for
minutes on end while procrastinating electronically.
Oh and put your fucking weights back in the rack.

Well clearly they are posting they are at the gym on all social media apps silly.

Come on, most people on their phones are not working hard, they are pissing about. It is easy to tell the difference. I’ve never seen a bodybuilder at our council run gym as they don’t have the weights or equipment for heavy lifting so there is no need longer rests. Living semi rurally it is a small gym with one bench, one bar and very little room in the free weight section so if someone is pissing about there is little option but to stand staring at them seething. Luckily I get to go mid morning or afternoon so can avoid most of the entitled buggers, my poor husband has it a lot worse in the evening.

Treaclepie19 · 18/08/2018 09:44

Definitely so they can check in... if you don't then did you even go to the gym?

lucydogz · 18/08/2018 13:25

It's the equivalent (to me) of 2 women swimming in tandem, heads well out of the water so they can chat non stop. If you're going to exercise why sit around faffing with your phone. One guy was sitting for 10 minutes plus. JFDI!
