AIBU dog owners?

I’m afraid of dogs. Not hysterically so but I don’t like it when large dogs approach me/jump on me/bark at me.

I’ve taken up jogging which I’m really enjoying.

I use a local park which is popular with dog owners as well as everyone else.

Today I had 4 large dogs jump on me and bark while trying to complete my run. It was unpleasant, I had to stop as they were chasing me and the owners were miles away.

Once I can cope with but repeated and with different dogs was just a bit miserable.

I don’t know where to go to run in peace.

What is the etiquette among decent dog owners? Is it fair to let them jump on strangers? Is that normal? Is there anything I can do to stop it?

I don’t make eye contact and I just run in a straight line but they seem to think I’m playing a game.

Lots of responsible dog owners seem to be able to keep their dogs back either verbally or remain close enough to bring them to heel so I know it can be done.

I’ve never had a dog so genuinely worried that I’m being unreasonable but it’s bloody miserable!

AIBU to expect to run without enormous dogs jumping on me?

My dog is a reactive idiot and an asshole at times

That’s my problem and so I have to take steps to stop him impacting on others or at least keep him at a distance where the extent of the impact is just being annoying

It’s not someone else’s problem to accommodate my snowflake dogs intricacies

Have a Snickers prescious. I was joking about the bone.
Seriously, maybe you’re just unlucky. You’re best ignoring them. Maybe they’ll help. I think it’s ok for friendly dogs to be off lead. No one knows you’re afraid of them if you don’t tell them I guess.

OP, don't you know that dogs appear to have more rights than us mere humans nowadays? Ridiculous that you should be told to modify YOUR behaviour when out in a public space. I'm now disabled and on crutches, hence a bit unsteady, and there are many places I can't go as I cannot cope with dogs running at me and jumping up etc. . but hey as long as the dogs can run about without a lead, then that's far more important Hmm

Singletomingle · 17/08/2018 23:01

I find almost the opposite, there is a seemingly endless number of dogs beung walked on extendable leads. Almost always the owner on one side of the path and the dog away on the other, the leads are difficult to spot and a massive trip hazard.

DollyDayScream · 17/08/2018 23:03

This is not acceptable and owners need to take responsibility. People are more
Important than dogs. If you can't keep your dog under control it needs to be on a lead in public.

Too many people thinking they are entitled to hop, skip, jump and run anywhere they like and not have to encounter any other species.

Well, tough. This planet is for sharing.

Be tolerant and don't wind up other animals with strange behaviour like running when there's nothing to run away from.

mustbejokingright · 18/08/2018 23:57

They shouldn't be off their leads if the owners cannot recall them before they approach someone.

I love dogs but totally understand that not everyone does.

I have a small dog and always keep him on the lead in public and shorten it and bring him to my heel when we're passing people on pavements etc, he is very friendly so I'm happy for people to approach him if they want to but don't allow him to jump up or approach them first.

IceCreamFace · 19/08/2018 08:28

YANBU. People should train their dogs or keep dogs with poor recall on the lead.
