To sleep terribly in hotels?

Why can I not sleep in hotels? The whole point of hotel rooms is that you sleep in them. I always find:

  1. Too hot (or occasionally - too cold)
  2. Slamming doors all night
  3. Can hear conversations from other doors/corridors
  4. People's bathroom fans whirring
  5. Bed is usually too hard or too soft
  6. I get disorientated in the night
  7. Usually cramped and can't go into another room to read or prepare food to avoid disturbing who I am with so just lie there sleeplessly.

I always prefer Airbnb but then forget it have to go for wedding or similar then just lie there regretting it all night! Does anyone find the same? Am lying in a bed now hoping that it will be better than last night when I got about 4 hours broken sleep!

I struggle to aleep anywhere that isnt my own bed!

AgentProvocateur · 17/08/2018 01:12

I always sleep like a log in hotel rooms. Love them all.

PitchBlackNight · 17/08/2018 01:23

YANBU

You forgot
8) Being disturbed by the millions of little led lights on EVERYTHING. (Slight exaggeration maybe)
9) The stink of air fresheners or those smelly little sticks in perfume (Sorry can't remember the proper name). Ugh, I hate that type of fake chemical smell. I want my room to SMELL OF nothing.

I can never sleep well in hotel rooms. I sometimes sleep better in a quiet small B and B but not always.

My own bed is best.

Hope you've fallen asleep now OP 😴😴😴😴😴

Jelly67 · 17/08/2018 01:30

Yes to all of the above but particularly why are hotel rooms always boiling and they give you a big heavy 1 billion tog duvet all year round

Rebecca36 · 17/08/2018 01:36

You could get your doctor to prescribe a mild sleeping tablet for when you have to go away. I always take something then, sleep well and wake refreshed - and am not addicted. Nothing wrong with that for occasional use.

I stick sanitary towels over red lights on the ceiling.

drastard · 17/08/2018 02:15

Go to nicer hotels!

I always sleep like a log. Mind you, I'll get 55 minutes sleep on a 1 hour domestic flight. It's my super power.

Jelly67 · 17/08/2018 02:19

feltcushion Grin did you ever leave one behind by mistake? That would be confusing for the cleaners!

drastard but you're still awake now? Grin

Hotel bedding is often rubbish, and the damned places are far too hot. I take my own pillow and a light blanket, so I don't have to be under their ridiculous giant suffocating 110-tog synthetic bloody duvets. I loathe hotels.

drastard · 17/08/2018 02:50

@Jelly67

I'm having a lovely breakfast overlooking the Chao Phraya at the Shangri-La in Bangkok.

I had an amazing sleep!

Jelly67 · 17/08/2018 03:00

drastard lovely!

GoldenMcOldie · 17/08/2018 03:23

Hotel bedding is the devil's work. Once you have used a crowbar to release the bedding from the mattress - it will weigh you down, you then have to navigate the huge often rock hard pillows (thank goodness for pillow menu).

My husband hates it but I go nowhere without my own pillow now.

My other pet hate is noisy minibar fridges.

AnalUnicorn · 17/08/2018 04:11

It’s the noise from other rooms doors being slammed, or thoughtless guests talking in the corridors that usually wake me up. I think hotel rooms should have a second door inside the room, between the main room and the “lobby” where the toilet usually is, to isolate the corridor noise better.

RebootYourEngine · 17/08/2018 04:29

I struggle to sleep in hotels if I am with someone else because the duvet just makes the bed too warm. If I am alone it's fine.

Arcadia · 17/08/2018 08:31

Last night wasn't as bad. I am sleeping with a very wriggly child (Dd8) in a double bed - not ideal but last minute booking - slept ok as took sedating antihistamines! Tucking into the breakfast now which is the upside. I can't eat breakfast at home but suddenly in a hotel can manage 3 courses!

Jealous of you drastard I am nowhere remotely as exotic!

FatherDickByrne · 17/08/2018 09:52

Just had 3 nights of hell in a Hong Kong hotel. Tiny room, sink attached to desk outside bathroom, small dbl bed meant DH & I were cramped next to each other with me against the wall. Air con was either too cold or horribly clammy. Staff’s heads swivelled as soon as the lift doors opened as lobby was equally tiny. I’m now back in the UK & DH has moved to one that’s even worse apparently. The upside is that when we first arrived, we were in a suite on the 70th floor overlooking the Kowloon hills. We weren’t paying for that one though! 😂

LeftRightCentre · 17/08/2018 09:56

Use an eye mask, use silicone ear plugs, take a powerful fan for white noise and to cool the room, use a chillow and take Nytol One a Night. I take my own blanket as the duvets are always too warm.

ginghamstarfish · 17/08/2018 09:57

Yes, hate it, especially the slamming doors - can't believe this is not given any thought! It's surely known that folks will be coming and going at all hours, particularly at airport type hotels, so a little attention to noise reduction would be a idea.

Mommybearx · 17/08/2018 09:58

I find holiday hotels like most 5*s in abroad cities aren’t bad, in England I find these things though. And what I hate is when I wake up all congested like my sinuses, like there must be a lot of dust.

LucilleBluth · 17/08/2018 10:03

Ugggg, airport hotels are the absolute worst. The banging of doors, loud talking, overheated rooms. They are so depressing....yes Crowne Plaza Manchester airport, I'm looking at you! I'm meant to be catching a flight to an exotic location and looking forward to it, now I'm just depressed in this concrete monstrosity.

ALemonyPea · 17/08/2018 10:07

I’m the same, especially in budget hotels. The only hotel I managed to sleep in was the Disney Hotel in Paris.

I usually don't sleep well in hotels, but two years ago I spent a night at the Pullman in Berlin. It was like sleeping in my own bed, I didn't wake up once and I could not hear any noise from the corridor.

ineedwine99 · 17/08/2018 10:27

First night for me is usually bad but once i've got my bearings i'm fine, my toddler however seems to dislike any room/bed that isn't hers and wakes early as a result
