To say 'No' to this viewing?

Renting a holiday cottage and we've just had a message from the owner asking if we would mind an estate agent bringing people round tomorrow for a viewing.

I don't want this to happen as I feel like I'll need to stay in to keep an eye on our stuff or lock valuables in the car. We had planned to be out at the time the viewing is taking place.
I also don't want to have to pack all of our clothes into the cases. There aren't any wardrobes here so we've got clothes on chairs in the bedrooms.

When we arrived and saw the 'For Sale' sign we did ask if there would be any viewings and were told no but the owner is saying the viewer can't do any other time.

AIBU to refuse to let them do a viewing. Can I actually refuse to let them?

No way would I agree to this. You are on holiday!

ohgodnotyouagain · 16/08/2018 19:26

Absolutely not! I wouldn't do it either, just tell them no - you don't even have to give a reason.

KellyBailey · 16/08/2018 19:26

I'd let them have the viewing but I wouldn't be going to any effort to tidy or clean for it, they can take it as they find it. I would take any valuables with you in the car when you go out though.

PositiveVibez · 16/08/2018 19:26

Sod that!!! Tell them no.

If they really want to see it, they will come back another time.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 16/08/2018 19:27

Just say no. Ridiculous of them to even ask you.

Nicknacky · 16/08/2018 19:28

kelly Not a great idea having to carry valuable in the car around with you. Why would you say yes?

ellendegeneres · 16/08/2018 19:29

I’d only do it on the proviso that half of my rental fee is refunded in advance in recognition of the inconvenience and upheaval it will cause.

If they say no, whatever, they don’t get to do the viewing- their sale is not your problem

TomHardysNextWife · 16/08/2018 19:29

Not a cat in hells chance. That's really intrusive and you've paid for the use of the cottage for the week.

BiggerBoat1 · 16/08/2018 19:30

Definitely say no. Cheeky feckers!

SuperSuperSuper · 16/08/2018 19:32

I'd say yes, for a sum of money off the price of the rental to cover the inconvenience (but I'm mercenary!) I wouldn't go to great lengths to tidy up. Is there a lockable drawer for valuables such as iPads etc?

Wildboar · 16/08/2018 19:32

Why can’t they just view? Just insist on the agent being there at all times.

Sleepyandtired21 · 16/08/2018 19:33

Ask for a percentage refund for the inconvenience, I suspect they’ll managed to rearrange..that’s absolute CFery

KellyBailey · 16/08/2018 19:34

Why would you say yes?

I don't really see it as a massive deal if I was going to be out anyway. I don't tend to take many valuables away on holiday anyway, a couple of electronic devices maybe.

Singlenotsingle · 16/08/2018 19:35

Just say no. You've paid for the week so it's yours for the week. CFs!

DoWhatWhen · 16/08/2018 19:36

Thank you for all your replies. We're going to say no but I guess there's nothing to stop them coming in anyway if we are out.

Really annoyed that we've been asked as I feel like our stuff will need to be packed away now, just incase.

OP posts:
isadoradancing123 · 16/08/2018 19:37

Absolutely no way

Nicknacky · 16/08/2018 19:37

I would say no especially as the op had no idea it was for sale and specifically asked if there were any viewings.

Cel982 · 16/08/2018 19:40

You're obviously well within your rights to say no. If we were going to be out anyway I'd probably say yes, but I wouldn't tidy up. I don't think they're likely to steal your stuff.

Dungeondragon15 · 16/08/2018 19:47

I would say yes if they would be happy to refund for the inconvenience of having to move your stuff out into the car for the day. If they won't give refund for the inconvenience then refuse.

LeftRightCentre · 16/08/2018 19:49

Fuck no! I'd have ripped him a new head. Cheeky fucker. I'd get a trap, too, like sprinkle powder around the door way as you leave and film yourself doing it. If it's disturbed when you return you'll know he just took advantage of you. Bastard. I'd leave a shitty review, too.

CarlyJayne1987 · 16/08/2018 19:50

yeah - fora huge discount or refund!!!!

JuneDonnelly · 16/08/2018 19:51

Yes ask for a refund of whatever a days rent is because you've not been able to enjoy a day of your holiday. Due to the inconvenience of having to tidy up etc.

Because after all like you said - they could just come in anyway.

LeftRightCentre · 16/08/2018 19:52

Why on Earth would you tidy up, either? Nope. You've paid for the cost of hire of the space for a week, not to help this cheeky git sell his holiday home.

SubtitlesOn · 16/08/2018 19:52

Tell them you were planning on staying in bed for the day "reading" WinkWinkWinkWink

But if they refund the total amount of the rental beforehand you will go out for the day SmileSmileSmileSmile

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 16/08/2018 19:55

I would say no AND ask for their assurance that no-one will enter the property during the period you are staying. You have paid for its exclusive use. I’d ask by email so that you have it in writing.
