Anyone else's dental hygienist say this? Anyone know what it means? I find it so so annoying but that could be cos my dental hygienist is beyond patronising, really puts me off going! Can anyone relate? Also what does it mean? 1, 1, 1 and tick the box, 2 and tick the box, 2, 1 what does it meeeeean???

Ask them?

I'd assume it's instructions for the dental nurse/whoever to fill in the online form about the state of your teeth.

cinnabarmoth · 16/08/2018 19:26

My dentist does something similar, I think they go round your teeth in a particular order and grade the state of each. No idea what the grades equate to though...could the tick the box refer to missing teeth? I had a few teeth removed when I was in my teens and my dentist notes these as part of the check

Louiselouie0890 · 16/08/2018 19:59

I'm taking a guess it's a mark on your teeth 1 good 3 bad something along them lines?

Louiselouie0890 · 16/08/2018 19:59

Or 6 filling 1 healthy 2 plaque?

bsbabas · 16/08/2018 20:07

Its a map of your teeth.

ferrier · 16/08/2018 20:10

I thought they were numbered 1-8 within each 'quadrant'. And lettered a-g or something similar for baby teeth.

pastapestoparmesan · 16/08/2018 20:12

It’s the size of the gaps between the teeth and gums. Between 1 and 3 is the target, 1, is the best score.

noCISinSister · 16/08/2018 20:17

It's the way they now score your plaque levels and risk of gum disease. My dentist prints off a score chart at the end of the session with the score for each quadrant. 1 is the best score - no plaque visible or sign of gum disease, 2 is minimal plaque and so on. Especially good for kids.

FadedRed · 16/08/2018 20:19

There are two ways that dental charting is done. One is about your teeth, start on your upper right and goes eight (missing, type of filling, need for treatment, absent, space filled or not if absent, unerupted etc) and goes from tooth eight to tooth one central incisor, then goes to eight on your upper left, then the lower two quadrants.
The second indicates gum health and 'pocketing' - spaces where the gum has 'come away' from the tooth. The lower the number, the better your gum health.

FadedRed · 16/08/2018 20:24

Btw, however 'snooty' your hygienist appears to be, it is your dental health that is important to you, and she is paid to do her job properly. So ask her to explain what she is finding and how best to maximise your dental hygiene to maintain your optimum dental health.

kokay · 16/08/2018 23:16

Thank you to all of you who have shed some light on this. That definitely makes sense (though some of these answers are slightly different) that it's a grading. Bit miffed I've been getting 2s tho. 😠Guess I'll have to work on that one. Cheers all!

oh god i know it aint half intimidating when the dentists speak in a different language and ur there with ya gob open lol x

PullUpsAreTricky · 16/08/2018 23:23

actually, 0 is the best score
1 means marginal bleeding - indicating gingivitis
2 means calculus, hardened plaque
3 means 35-5.5mm pockets, which can indicate active periodontitis ( gum disease)
4 means >5.5mm + advanced periodontitis

  • means furcation or recession
kokay · 16/08/2018 23:27

Ooooh k. What does tick the box mean? Sometimes it's just a number, sometimes it's with a tick the box.

maybe a ( - ) Which means not enough teeth to score
