About the wine in the fridge

My lodger left a bottle of white wine, opened and half drunk in the fridge. He brought it back with him from a holiday abroad, half consumed. This was over six weeks ago. I remember the dates he was away as they are in my calendar and I know it was that exact bottle, half consumed as I said I thought it odd he had brought back an opened bottle from a holiday! Especially as to my knowledge, white wine doesn't last much longer than a few days once opened before it tastes horrible.

It's not an expensive bottle, just a regular Chardonnay from Tesco.

Last week he went away again. In the fridge door he left about 6 bottles; the wine plus 5 bottles of fizzy drink. Some opened and some not.

I couldn't fit my food in as it's a small fridge and whatever is in the door compartment takes up room.

So without giving it a second thought, as in I was doing him a favour by clearing out the fridge, I poured the wine away and binned the bottle. I genuinely presumed there was no way he was going to drink the wine after all this time.

I didn't throw out the fizzy drinks as I wasn't sure which ones were opened or how long they had been there.

Now, almost two months later he has asked me where his wine is. He has noticed it's gone from the fridge. I told him I had poured it away and he is demanding I buy him a replacement bottle!!

So who IBU?

Him do not buy him a new bottle and tell him he needs to empty the fridge regularly of half opened bottles as they take up room or you will.

Dfg15 · 16/08/2018 19:06

He is !!

HoleyCoMoley · 16/08/2018 19:06

He left 6 bottles of wine and 5 bottles of pop in a small fridge door? What happened to those.

hazeydays14 · 16/08/2018 19:06

I don’t think YABU at all.. wine that old would be rank.

However, when we were living with DPs parents I bought some bargain reduced humus that went off that day and the next day it was gone because MIL and I have very different standards when it comes to best before dates. I was a bit tamping about her throwing away my food tbh.

Munchyseeds · 16/08/2018 19:09

Just laugh at him!

scrabbled01 · 16/08/2018 19:10

Sorry he left 6 bottles. 5 were fizzy drink and 1 was the wine. Needed to sacrifice 1 to fit my milk in as I couldn't lay it down!

He's now storming angrily around the kitchen.

He's a twat. Let him live elsewhere. Lodgers should not be stropping round your house, cheeky sod. Give him notice and tell him to piss off.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/08/2018 19:16

If he's stomping around the kitchen, it may be time for him to be an ex-lodger.

Deshasafraisy · 16/08/2018 19:17

He needs to move out

Distancehelp · 16/08/2018 19:21

He’s obviously making a drama out of it, but if I was you I would have text him to say something needed sacrifing and which did he want you to move.

anonymousbird · 16/08/2018 19:21

Who the hell brings half a bottle of wine home from an overseas trip?!

It wouldn't lasted more than a few days let alone several weeks.

Taxi time for him for being an arse.

RoseAndRose · 16/08/2018 19:21

Wouidn't the wine be vinegar by now?

If he's otherwise a good lodger, get a replacement bottle, drink it with him, laugh, set the world to rights and set some new fridge rules whilst he's nicely pickled

heartshapedpositnotes · 16/08/2018 19:21

YANBU. How long has he been living there and how do you get on normally?

AutisticHedgehog · 16/08/2018 19:27

He sounds like a bullying twat. Get rid of him.

HoleyCoMoley · 16/08/2018 19:34

It would have given him terrible gut rot, maybe you should have left it for him, he sounds like a stroppy teenager, how old is he. Tell him to get a grip.

ChipsAndKetchup · 16/08/2018 19:35

Tell him to buy his own fridge and keep it in his room.

MagicFajita · 16/08/2018 19:43

Buy him a half bottle of wine and give him his notice.

YouTheCat · 16/08/2018 19:48

Buy a bottle of wine. Drink half of it and let the rest fester for him.

user1471517900 · 16/08/2018 19:54

You could have taken it out and left it on side but I agree he's being ridiculous.

Helloisitteaurlookingfor · 16/08/2018 20:20

Urgh, I hate the idea of this but there needs to be a fridge rule where any item left open for a certain amount of time gets chucked apart from the obvious stuff like sauces, mint jelly etc that's normal to be half eaten and in the fridge for a while.

Either that or chuck the lodger.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 16/08/2018 20:33

He sounds a ridiculous manchold - who on earth brings half a bottle of wine home from holiday and stomps around the house because it’s been chucked out.

But if it were me I’d buy a bottle of wine, drink half of it and give him the rest.
I’d also ask that he didn’t fill the door of the fridge with his bottles of pop.

scrabbled01 · 16/08/2018 20:35

I absolutely thought I was doing him a favour - at least I didn't think anything of it - I frequently chuck out his rotting food and anything of mine that's obviously past it when I do my weekly food shop. Never even crossed my mind to think he might actually want to drink it.

OP posts:
Bluelady · 16/08/2018 20:39

He was lucky it lasted that long, I'd have drunk it the first week.

Pengggwn · 16/08/2018 20:46

Even if he kept it for cooking, it is ridiculous for him to take up that much room in the fridge. However, that boundary should really have been established a long time ago.

BrazzleDazzleDay · 16/08/2018 20:56

Nevermind the rank wine, who needs 5 bottles of fizzy juice in the fridge at a time?
