If you are stupid enough to go hiking wearing flip flops and carrying no supplies - not even a bottle of water, and get lost!!

Or climb up mountains unprepared.

Elementtree · 16/08/2018 15:29

Lost for six days, in this country? Surely if you walk for a couple of days, from any point in just about any direction, you'd hit at least one maccy ds?

HoleyCoMoley · 16/08/2018 15:30

Did he give the rescuers any money, a donation or offer to pay. Loads of people get into scrapes they need rescuing from because they went out ill prepared, it is irresponsible. Was he just taking a stroll and got lost.

Confusedbeetle · 16/08/2018 15:31

He ate bees_ How?

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 16/08/2018 15:33

Well it's in America so chances are he will have to pay. Can't imagine his medical insurance company will pay out for stupidity.

Soubriquet · 16/08/2018 15:33
Confused

How weird....how unprepared can you be to be that idiotic and go hiking.

I understand how he got lost though. America is a massive place

ShatnersBassoon · 16/08/2018 15:34

A colleague was once rescued off Snowdon with a broken leg, wearing sandals. I'm sure he paid for the Mountain Rescue, or at least was encouraged to make a big donation.

ilovegin112 · 16/08/2018 15:35

People go out ill prepared , get lost and die in this country as well

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 16/08/2018 15:40

Yes, possibly via some sort of extreme sports type insurance cover that pays out to the rescue charity that saved you.

wink1970 · 16/08/2018 15:46

Every summer there are stories of ill-prepared 'yachties' and /or people getting stranded by sea tides, and I think they should pay the RNLI, especially as they risk their lives in bad seas to rescue the idiots.....

WhiteCoyote · 16/08/2018 15:54

Yep. I live in a seaside town very popular with tourists. There’s massive signs about saying if you park on the beach the tide will catch you... I’ve lost count of the amount of cars that have been flooded since I moved here.
Also many signs saying how dangerous and fast the tide is. People still choose to swim in it and the RNLI gets plenty of work unfortunately.

TooTrueToBeGood · 16/08/2018 15:57

It sounds like a good idea but......

WHo defines exactly what counts as adequately equipped/prepared?

If you start charging for rescues would people in need of assistance be reluctant to call for help or leave it longer than sensible for fear of incurring costs?

Most outdoor rescues in the UK are performed by, or have significant assistance from, volunteer organisations like Mountain Rescue and RNLI etc. Having seen numerous discussions on this topic on outdoors pursuits forums my understanding is both the organisations and individual volunteers are very much against introducing charges.

PeridotCricket · 16/08/2018 15:58

How do you eat bees...?

crunchymint · 16/08/2018 16:00

The problem if you did that OP, is that people would not ring for rescue when they needed it.
I was abroad when someone in another hiking group had got seriously lost. A helicopter was dispatched to find him. When the helicopter arrived he waved it away as he thought he would have to pay. The pilot had to tell him clearly he would not have to pay, before he would get in.
Those most likely to need rescued are young fit men. Would you be happy for them to die rather than be rescued.

PlatypusPie · 16/08/2018 16:03

My dad was involved in a rescue group and had some eye rolling stories of people setting off in dressy sandals, inappropriate clothing, no maps or compasses ( pre mobile days) and showing little gratitude when they were rescued to people who had interrupted meals or family leisure to go and save their thoughtless backsides.

LeftRightCentre · 16/08/2018 16:03

The problem if you did that OP, is that people would not ring for rescue when they needed it.

That's their lookout then. If you take chances like that.

Do bees taste like honey? Is there any nutritional value in bees??! Bees? Confused

Dyrne · 16/08/2018 16:09

Surely you’re better off following the bees back to the hive to find honey, rather than eating the bees themselves?

crunchymint · 16/08/2018 16:11

leftrightcentre If you would be prepared for your son or nephew to die because of that, then fine.

Butteredparsn1ps · 16/08/2018 16:16

Gets sidetracked> Surely you’re better off following the bees back to the hive to find honey, rather than eating the bees themselves?

Looks for like post button Grin

Ginorchoc · 16/08/2018 16:20

The bees kept chasing him so he killed them and ate them, he sounds a dick. An unprepared dick who should pay.
