I have written the most of my cover letter but struggling with the ending. I just finished the main paragraph and now want a sort ending saying something like this (roughly)

I am keen to work for a company with a great reputation and high profile like XY.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely XZ

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely

Your 'looking forward' example is not a full sentence so I wouldnt recommend that in a formal communication.

Similarly 'Sincerely' feels too informal. Yours sincerely is what I'd expect to see as a potential employer.

THEsonofaBITCH · 16/08/2018 14:03

Not a lot to add but the more specific the better so they know its not a scattershot application - even though it might be as you only need to change the company name and position which can be quickly done with "find and replace" in Word, Best of luck! :
In summary, I am very interested in working for (Tesco's Limited) due to the excellent reputation and care for their stakeholders I have learned of and admire coupled with the outstanding match between my skills and the position of (CSR) I am applying for.

Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Dear Sir - yours faithfully

Dear Mr Smith - yours sincerely

FermatsTheorem · 16/08/2018 14:03

What display said. Also, did you start the letter with the person's name? If so, sincerely is right. If you started it "Dear Madam/Sir" then it's "yours faithfully."

FermatsTheorem · 16/08/2018 14:04

Cross post!

THEsonofaBITCH · 16/08/2018 14:05

Posted too soon, meant to say to close with something like:
Best Regards, XYZ

I agree that looking forward to hearing from you is a fragment, too casual and needy, IMO

Mumminmum · 16/08/2018 14:06

"I hope to get an opportunity to discuss my career options with you."

Otherwise google "cover letter". There are plenty of ideas on the internet.

Mynamesjohnnyutah · 16/08/2018 14:07

I look forward to hearing from you to discuss the role in more detail.

And you shouldn’t end it ‘yours sincerely’ as you technically and grammatically cannot be sincere to someone you have never met. The correct sign off is ‘yours faithfully’ in this instance.

Teaandcrisps · 16/08/2018 14:10

Or 'I do hope that you found my application of interest and would welcome the opportunity to discuss with you further'
Yours faithfully etc

PavlovianLunge · 16/08/2018 14:16

Dear Name - Yours sincerely.
Dear Madam/Sir or Sir/Madam - Yours faithfully.

I would end with something like ‘I look forward (rather than I hope) to having the opportunity to discuss my suitability for this role with you.

Good luck.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 16/08/2018 14:17

No, really don't use Best Regards in a formal covering letter.

If your letter starts Dear name, then end Yours sincerely. If it starts Dear Sir or Madam, then end Yours faithfully. Johnnyutah is completely and utterly wrong, Yours sincerely has been correctly used for decades.

curiositycreature · 16/08/2018 14:22

As someone who has recently had to recruit to a few vacancies, important to stress that I couldn't tell you how people sign off cover letters. As in, I can't remember ever reading an ending that was terrible or the opposite. (Would like to think you've already made an impression by the end!)

So don't stress too much about it.

Checked through the latest ones I've sent:

Thank you for your consideration. I would love the opportunity to meet with you and look forward to hearing from you.

And

**
Thank you for considering my application; please do let me know if you require any other information. I would love to discuss my interest further at interview.

Good luck!!

Mynamesjohnnyutah · 16/08/2018 14:26

... aren’t we saying the same thing? Yours faithfully for someone you don’t know, sincerely for someone you do.

senua · 16/08/2018 14:27

"I enclose my CV and look forward to hearing from you."

PeridotCricket · 16/08/2018 14:42

All I'd say is make sure in the cover letter that they know why you are interested in the job and that you have read about the role. I can't tell you how many times I've received a generic covering letter and CV giving me no clue as to why someone wants the role.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 16/08/2018 14:45

... aren’t we saying the same thing? Yours faithfully for someone you don’t know, sincerely for someone you do

Not quite. You said we must have met the named person to use YS. Actually we often know the name of someone without having met them.
