Would you prefer this? (4 day working week)

If you could have a longer working day mon-Thur (say 8am-6pm) but it meant you could have fri-Sun off work each week, would you prefer it?
Some European countries do it such as Norway and Denmark and its proven to be a huge success in lessening anxiety and depression.

I'm a teacher, do 8-5:30 with 20-mins lunch break most days, 5 days a week. Can't wait to try and go part-time after maternity, going to be bliss!

I can see why some of the scandanaivan countries are classed as the happiest places to live because of their shorter working weeks and higher salaries.

I love doing compressed hours! It’s standard for everyone in my team and it was a huge attraction to coming into the team tbh. Some people have a fixed day, often for childcare, others have a rotating day off.

wendz86 · 16/08/2018 09:56

I would prefer it but wouldn't work with childcare. I work 9-5 mon to thurs and means i drop off my kids at 7.45 and pick up at 6.

chocatoo · 16/08/2018 10:06

I would have loved this (work for myself now so different), however most companies seem to require 8.30 to 5.30 minimum now anyway sonot sure how it would work. Good luck to you if you can get it!

HicDraconis · 16/08/2018 10:08

8-6 is my normal working day, 5 days a week.

EdisonLightBulb · 16/08/2018 10:09

I would love it.

My FT role is 36 hours so 7.2 or 7 hours 12 minutes a day excluding lunch.

8-6 with an hour lunch over four days also gives me 36 hours.

Oldraver · 16/08/2018 10:09

Ive done it in the past and would do again. My OH works 4 on 4 off...gives us lots of time together, though the pattern can mean a few weekends of him being at work

Raglansleeve · 16/08/2018 10:35

DH does 5 days in 4 with Mondays off. It is brilliant, he's been doing it for 5 years, we regularly go away for the night on a Sunday when lots of places have cheaper rates.

He has an 80 mile round trip for work so haves quite a bit of petrol each week, and his hours have changed very little anyway - he was having to leave the house at 6.30am to beat traffic when he was working 5 days.

Raglansleeve · 16/08/2018 10:37

Also, DH's work place has noticed a huge drop off in sick days being taken now so many people work condensed hours - suggesting quite a lot of 'sick' days were more 'sick of work' days!

Disfordarkchocolate · 16/08/2018 10:40

I've just moved to a 9 day fortnight. Hopefully when the school holidays have finished I will get to appreciate my Friday off. My husband is thinking of doing the same in a year or two.

RedDwarves · 16/08/2018 10:43

Wouldn't be possible in the industry I work in.

But yes, I'd do it if it were an option.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 16/08/2018 10:44

Apart from the fact that I usually work 8.30 - 6.30 /7pm. I would do this. I would really like the option of a 9 day fortnight.

notacooldad · 16/08/2018 10:45

We kind of do this.
We work shifts including weekends. The weekends are set and with good reason but we are rotated for long days e.g. 12/ 10pm or 8/6pm so that we can have 3 days of a week. We don't have a lunch break as such so the hours are inclusive and we take a break when it's appropriate to do so.

It's a really good system.

NerdyBird · 16/08/2018 10:51

I would do this if I had no commute, or say only a 10 min one. To do it now would mean husband having to do all drop offs and pickups and I wouldn't really see my dd. I'd be out of the house 6.45-7 as a minimum with my current job and commute! And we'd have to buy a second car or a bicycle so I could get to the station.

I do 9.30-5.30 Tues-Fri and husband does a 9-day fortnight. Means we can share drop offs and pickups and get to see dd. My commute is an hour if all running ok.
Loads of people did compressed hours when I was in the civil service and my current workplace is very flexible too.

Hogtini · 16/08/2018 10:52

Yes please, 7-4 Mon - Thurs would be perfect.

DroningOn · 16/08/2018 10:55

I used to do a 9 day fortnight with every second Friday off. Now back to 5 day week full time and I really miss it.

Extra long weekend worth the midweek effort every time!

Stompythedinosaur · 16/08/2018 10:57

I did this for a bit, it was good. Then I went to 3 days a week but with long hours, which was great too!

allthgoodusernamesaretaken · 16/08/2018 11:04

It's called compressed hours, it's been possible in the UK for some time. However, I know a few people who have been turned down, on the basis that, in a professional role, you would routinely be expected to stay until 6 PM anyway

Asthenia · 16/08/2018 13:57

I work Monday to Thursday and my life is so much better. I hate the idea of a 5 day week! 2 days is just not enough time to relax, socialise, do chores, see family, anything else you might want to do.
