"Two lady owners from new"and the motor trade

Anybody else find the motor trade incredibly sexist? It really winds me up to read about "lady owners", when talking to sales people and mechanics the fact I know more about cars than my husband really seems to shock them!

And those 'two lady drivers' only ever drove the car to church on Sunday Grin
I wouldn't worry your pretty little head about it, Op.

Justanotheruser01 · 15/08/2018 17:53

Normally I get my husband to drive me to church tbh I am just a simple woman I cannot be in charge of an automobile

Does this still happen? LOL Grin

'Lady drivers' are no less likely to speed and run the car ragged than men these days.

This kind of line seems to belong in the first half of the last century!

I have to say that really isn't my experience. When I see a car speeding or driving recklessly it is almost always a man behind the wheel. Of course thats just anecdotal but I am fairly sure men are more likely to receive driving bans, drink drive, speed nd commit mst driving offences.

Santaclarita · 15/08/2018 18:23

Men are statistically more likely to have a crash, that's why insurance companies used to charge them more.

But anyone that has a car after I've had it is getting one that has been used thoroughly. I drive long distances and fast. Grin

I got really annoyed when I went with my girl friend to look at cars. She was trading in her car, she was buying the replacement but the salesman kept talking to me. Every time he asked me a questions I turned to my GF and she replied to him.
We have now been married for15 years and still talk about that male chauvinist salesman when we pass that showroom.

jemihap · 15/08/2018 18:30

Most of the lady drivers I know have zero ''mechanical sympathy'', harsh driving styles, riding the clutch, constantly in the wrong gear, not keeping their vehicles properly maintained etc

c3pu · 15/08/2018 19:31

I read "lady owner" as "will need clutch replacing soon".

There was a thread on here a little while ago, most of the mumsnetters who posted on it didn't know how to check the oil, coolant, brake fluid or tyre pressures and just left things alone between services.

Frightening.

dudsville · 15/08/2018 19:34

The "lady" bit is the problem. I wouldn't buy a car driven only by a "young lad". There's a reason why the pay more for insurance - check the stats!

Really? I do all of that, can't afford to be without a car.

nikkylou · 15/08/2018 19:48

It's quite amusing. It means nothing, just sounds sexist. Can't tell if they're trying to tell you the car is barely used, and pristine. Or as others have pointed out, that it's been badly maintained and "that noise is how it's sounded as long as I can remember".
Like the "one previous owner"
My car was a ex-rental - one owner. It was 2.5 years old, I had to pay for it's second service, due 6-7 months prior.
I also get to arrange recovery for rentals. How one burns a clutch out with less than 1000 miles on the clock I do not know, among many other examples.
