To wonder why some dog owners can't obey a simple rule

I am on holidays from work at the moment and have been out and about for walks in different parks near me. They all have signs up in several places specifying that dogs must be kept on a lead. But in every single park this is ignored by a large number of dog owners. I'm nervous of dogs and a couple of times have asked owners if they could put their dog on a lead and have been met with surprise, resentment or an incredulous laugh. Only one person apologised and immediately put the lead back on.

Why is it so hard for some people to obey a simple rule. In one park dogs are allowed off lead until 11 am and for the last hour before the park closes. But even there loads of dogs are running freely around in the middle of the day.

Because some people are dickheads and don't think rules apply to them. Am a dog owner, wouldn't dream of letting them off if the signs were there, its daft.

Bad luck OP.

knittingdad · 14/08/2018 15:38

Ignorance? Either of the rule, or of the reason for it.

They can easily see the benefit in allowing their dog freedom to run around.

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 14/08/2018 15:40

Because SOME dog owners are morons, they are, morons. And these morons that can't read, can't put a lead on let alone pick up the contents of their dog's bowel give the rest of us good dg owners a really bad name.

BackinTimeforTea · 14/08/2018 15:41

Can you contact whoever oversees the park to report flouting of the rules? I am a dog owner, there are no parks round me with rules about times dogs are to be on leads but if there were I’d respect them or use a different park.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 14/08/2018 15:43

We live in a society where some drivers appear to believe that stopping at a red light isn't a rule they have to obey, they are probably the same dog walkers.
I bloody hate the 'it doesn't apply to me ' brigade.

Disquieted1 · 14/08/2018 15:44

The worst is when it's been snowing. Too many dog owners cover the shit with snow, thinking they're being clever as they discreetly kick snow over the top of the turd.
Of course when the snow melts the pavement is covered in dog shit! It's like playing hopscotch as you dodge the turds.

adaline · 14/08/2018 15:44

The same reason some dog owners don't pick up poo, or some people ignore the speed limit, or some people shoplift. They think the rules don't apply to them. The fact that they're dog owners is by the by - they're just selfish fuckers.

OddBoots · 14/08/2018 15:45

Because some dog owners, like a proportion of people in all areas of like think they are so special that rules can't possibly apply to them and their prince/princess pooch. It's not a dog walker thing, it's a people thing.

EvaHarknessRose · 14/08/2018 15:46

Breakdown of society innit

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 14/08/2018 15:47

It's not just dog owners. I constantly wonder about the inability for certain entitled twats to follow simple and basic rules that are clearly stated.

Hoppinggreen · 14/08/2018 15:48

I was somewhere at the weekend where dogs are allowed in certain areas but not others.
There was a bit DH and the Dc wanted to see so I sat outside with the dog, next to ( but not obscuring) the NO DOGS sign
In the space of 10 minutes 4 people walked past us with their dogs.
I assume those people are entitles arseholes in other areas of their life too.

Lydiaatthebarre · 14/08/2018 17:02

It's so annoying and really ruins public parks for a lot of people. I would really love if someone could come on here and explain why they persist in doing this.

It’d be more productive to put in a complainer to whoever runs the park

Knowivedonewrong · 14/08/2018 17:23

Because unfortunately some dog owners are entitled arseholes. The world revoles around them and their dogs. They don't give a shit about anyone else, or anyone else's dogs.

I say this as a dog owner myself, who picks up after my dogs, don't allow them to ruin people's picnics and lead the both when I see other dogs on leads or signs to say they should be on leads. 😤

Mummyschnauzer · 14/08/2018 17:27

Because people in all
Walks of life think rules don’t apply to them. But are there spaces nearby where dogs can run free. What I have seen recently is so many spaces not allowing dogs or only on short lead, beaches, parks etceither the places that do allow dogs are getting overcrowded with them causing issues or people are ignoring dog bans. Not saying it’s right but I think that’s often the reason. Many seaside towns often designate a beach well out of town usually with no parking as the dog beach, so people end up using the dog free beach.

prettywhiteguitar · 14/08/2018 17:32

We were at a forest where there is a great play area for the kids to go on.

Signs all around saying dogs are allowed EVERYWHERE, acres and acres of land but not on the children’s playground.

How many people with dogs where there ? 5 ! One woman stood with her mum, both had dogs one of which barked consistently at her child on the swing. So relaxing 🙄

Radardetector · 14/08/2018 17:37

I know someone who never puts his dog on a lead. He is small and well behaved.

He says the dogs on leads rules are due to large, aggressive and/or badly behaved dogs and he doesn't see why his dog should be punished because some people have bad/scary dogs.

I do agree that if all dogs were well trained and behaved we wouldn't need to ban dogs from areas or force them onto leads. But too many people have badly behaved, un-socialised, out of control dogs who ruin it for everyone else.

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 14/08/2018 17:49

Some people are just arses. There's someone in my village who insists on walking his dog off lead over the common grazing when there are sheep on it. He's been asked not to, several times, and just gives out a load of abuse, saying his dog doesn't chase sheep. As a sheep owner, I have a trained border collie, and he's on a lead around sheep if he's not working, so why this guy thinks his terrier should get an exemption is beyond me.
