1 month later and feel like telling them to stick it

After months of looking for a job and countless interviews, I eventually got told I had the job, 1 month later after forking our money for a disclosure I’ve still not started. First it was references which I happily gave the company, then it was a copy of my birth certificate, bank statements, address etc as proof, then a week later a photo for my name badge, then another week passed they asked for a copy of my national insurance number, now it’s proof of qualifications and a written reference from my college lecturer who I’ve never met in my life as I’m doing a distance learning course.
So from being emailed that I had the job to then be told so they can proceed with application has been a waste of my time.
The best of it is they had all my details when they interviewed me and took photocopies of it.

Would I be unreasonable to tell them to stick it, it’s been 1 month back and forth and still earning nothing sitting here.

Don't tell them to stick it but start looking for another job in the meantime just in case. Then if you get another job, tell them to stick it!

Benandhollysmum · 14/08/2018 14:50

Ridiculous after a month though, all I’ll be doing is changing dirty sheets not applying for the secret service.

Got to stage my minds in overdrive why they repeatably want my details

abigailsnan · 14/08/2018 14:58

It took my DIL 3 months to get an offer of a start date after she had completed all you have done and received her disclosure report.

RedPanda2 · 14/08/2018 14:58

I work for the NHS and it can take months to get in post, so we tell people not to leave their current job until they have the confirmation letter that all checks are satisfactory.

OlennasWimple · 14/08/2018 15:03

Depends who the job is with and what checks they are doing. Things like a DBS check or a financial check can take a few weeks

Benandhollysmum · 14/08/2018 15:13

Got my disclosure certificate in last week,
I’ll be working in a care facility that the residents live independently in self contained flats.

I’ve given these details over yet they want repeats constantly.

I’ve shunned off other employers thinking with being succuessful meant I had the job, but doesn’t look like it.

Can you email them and ask for a start date ?

crazycadetmum · 14/08/2018 16:12

Also nhs- took me 3 months to get into post...wait and be patient

Lazypuppy · 14/08/2018 16:19

@Benandhollysmum took me 5 months to start latest job

Benandhollysmum · 14/08/2018 16:30

some people don’t have time to wait though, waiting don’t pay bills or put food on table. It’s quite crap that there’s a hold up on this, ive not applied for nhs. If I drove I’d get a care job in an instant going round peoples homes, the fact all I’ll be doing is washing bedding and helping put food on a plate for service users living independently is just to long a wait.

Why advertise for jobs and keep people waiting months? why not say look we won’t be hiring for a few months in their ads that way people know either to apply or not.

I’m constantly in contact with the HR department and it’s constant with the want this and that, now to get a reference from a tutor who has only passed me on assessments and never spoken to me directly is how I won’t get the job.

they paid for half my disclosure feel like writing a cheque with the cost and a note with I give up.

butlerswharf · 14/08/2018 16:55

Sounds like a pretty standard time frame really.

Darkautumn · 14/08/2018 16:58

This is sort of standard.

booandbumpp · 14/08/2018 16:59

This isn't with the NHS by any chance? Took me 3 months to start my first NHS jobs because of HR. Moving trusts was another 4 months, and moving back to my original trust was another 2 months (even though they'd already checked everything once anyway???).
DBS checks and references take time I guess but understand your frustration!! Like pp suggested, I would keep looking, but not tell them to stick it until you have something else.

RedPanda2 · 14/08/2018 17:01

I understand your frustration but this is pretty standard. Wait it out as another job could take another few months.

DelphiniumBlue · 14/08/2018 17:02

Not standard. DBS check can be done within days, and you shouldn't have to pay for it yourself.
All the rest should be done it one hit, none of it is anything unusual, but it is unusual to be asking for it all piecemeal.
I'd keep applying for other jobs until you get a start date.

BringMeTea · 14/08/2018 17:02

Full sympathy OP. It is shitty. Hope it all turns out well soon. Flowers

Benandhollysmum · 14/08/2018 17:12

Yeah it was done within 10 days but my records squeaky clean though so that’s probably why it was quick.
It’s the constant asking for things they already have, it’s none stop.
Yeah I had to pay half the cost and sent payment to the company.
I’ve a feeling HR in the company is pretty bloody useless. I’m stressed to the absolute max of what next they’ll be asking for when I’m currently in the middle of assessments.
I’m feeling I kinda have the reason to be utterly pissed off but feeling maybe I’m being unreasonable.

Benandhollysmum · 14/08/2018 17:16

I’m not giving them another reference though they asked for 2 they got the 2 and not asking strangers to give me a reference. Nobody should have to jump through hoops like this it’s ridiculous.

OP posts:
Singlenotsingle · 14/08/2018 17:19

It took a friend of mine 11 weeks to get a start date, and he is only an IT man Confused

Gettingbackonmyfeet · 14/08/2018 17:26

It's in a care home....think carefully on what that means

It means you are in direct contact with people who are vulnerable

Most homes will have dementia patients and others who have physical disabilities and they are at risk

Whilst I understand the frustration if they haven't been clear about the timelines....your needs do not come above ensuring to the best of their abilities that those they hire have been checked fully

Dbs is not the be all and end all...ive hired in the care industry and checking employment history is essential and references about whether you've been at college

If they are slapdash you could be anyone given access to vulnerable people

I've asked for all of the above...if you told me no to a reference I asked for you would simply never work for me...ever

It is frustrating I understand but it's for a reason

Again...dbs is a very small part of the checks required by CQC AND industry standard

GoatWithACoat · 14/08/2018 17:27

If they are asking for things you have already sent, just reply, ‘please note this item was sent by post/email whatever on x date. Make sure you get confirmation of receipt each time either by recorded delivery or by email and quote that back to them.

mildshock · 14/08/2018 17:32

DP is a prison officer, it took 10 months from being offered a position to starting his training.

He had to stay in his previous role on a zero-hour contract so he could hand in his notice in a flash.

It's ridiculous, I know, but if you want the job stick it out, but keep looking for something else in the mean time.

Benandhollysmum · 14/08/2018 17:47

Its not a care home, but a residential facility for the elderly who wish to live independently. It’s a unit of self contained flats which won’t be allowed to go in as it’s their home. So those living there won’t have dementia.

Well I’m not working for you but if you find it acceptable to accept a reference from a stranger off someone that’s to work with you good luck with that, I’m not doing it. I’m an honest person.

OP posts:
Gettingbackonmyfeet · 14/08/2018 17:52

The point there (ignoring the attacking tone) is that I'm sure you are honest but they don't know that presumably

I really hope you are not suggesting anyone requests a stranger only reference ? If that's right you are intimating in that last sentence they ignored ones from those that know you and are relying on a stranger one ? Then yes that's completely wrong ...i very much doubt that

I do hope you also realise supported living also has vulnerable people in there?

You know what...im not going to engage any further that last post was ....worrying...

Benandhollysmum · 14/08/2018 19:23

I’ve already explained they want a reference from a tutor I’ve never spoken to or engaged any conversation with, what part of that do you not understand? you’re the one attacking with your patronising tone, it’s there explained at least 3 times. I do not care what you believe, I know differently as I’m engaging with HR.
