To be confused about my babies laryngomalacia or floppy larynx

Baby is 10 weeks old and has very loud rattly breathing. GP said 4 weeks ago that it was reflux as baby has been quite sicky too. The sickyness is much better with reflux meds but her breathing is so loud and rattly.
Took her back to GP yesterday who said he thinks it could be a floppy larynx and that he thinks she'll grow out of it. I took baby to be weighed today and the health visitor said she needs to be referred to a specialist and it's not something that sorts itself out. I'm feeling abit confused now aibu to ask if anyone has had experience of this and what happened? Thankyou

Hi My DS has this. We first noticed it when he was just over 2 weeks old
Took him to the GP who told us to go to the hospital, we were seen and then referred to see a specialist
It did clear up by the time he was one
It was very hard but we got used to it, visitors really found it scary hearing him breathe like that Flowers

My DS had this. Does he sound a bit like a seal sometimes (like squeaky breathing)?

It didn't actually affect his breathing though, he just made funny noises and was a bit more reflux-y. He went to a specialist but not much happened after that. Grown out of it now.

Oh, this takes me back! My then 6 month old child suddenly became very ill at about 6.30 on a Friday night with difficulty breathing. I called the doctor who came out and said he wasn’t at all happy with his condition and called the local paediatric consultant (and also gave ds some heavy duty abs as a precaution.

Paed duly arrived and diagnosed a floppy larynx. Yeah, right, this previously healthy child suddenly develops an under-developed larynx! It was all very scary, but it was a chest infection.

Hi my dtwin2 had this. He kept holding his breath at night but it just sounded like he couldn't breathe in if that makes sense, rather than apnoea. We were taken into hospital and he was out on oxygen monitoring. They kept dropping so after a few days we were sent to the larger general and stayed there for a week (7 weeks old at this point with his twin at home). He had anaesthetic to put cameras into his lungs and scans eventually they diagnosed this.
We had an apnoea monitor at home for him for months, it wasn't a fun time.
The paed was brilliant and he did grow out of it, from about 1 to 5 you could just hear it when he had been very active. After 5 didn't notice it, or very rarely.
He was on a LOT of antibiotics in his first year and a half and also higher fat formula as he couldn't suck and breathe at the same time so got very tired very quickly feeding.
I do think his was especially severe though, hence all the tests at the start.
This takes me back!

I have had alot of conflicting advice it's frustrating. Hopefully she will grow out of it but everyone who visits things she's got a horrendous chest infection!

Push to be referred to a specialist. Then I'd be more comfortable if they said it was minor and would be grown out of.
My DS had it and was seen at 7 months and I was told he would grow out of it, probably by the time his next appointment was...He was right.

My son has this. He had bought of broncholitis every months until he was about 1 year. Treatment was steroid and antibiotics. It never caused problem though until he reached weaning stage. Then he continually choked etc. Turns out he also had large adenoids and this made breathing and eating hard. They took out his adenoids and he has been fab since.
You can ask to be referred to ENT if you want them to double check his airways

imnotreally · 14/08/2018 18:59

Should grow out of it but worth getting it checked.

Is she having difficulty breathing or does it just sound really bad?

We just thought it was a funny breathy quirk our DS has, he wasn’t horrendous but now that I think he was the most colicky out of my 3, but it never seemed really bad.

Speak to your HV or GP and go to a specialist even if to put your mind at rest.

My now 13year old had this and was so loud that He sounded like a demented donkey when excited and Darth Vader when relaxed. He did grow out of it by about 1 year old but we saw a paediatric specialist when he was about two months because in extreme cases it can affect breathing and swallowing.

Typically though, it is nothing to be concerned about (although explaining to every Tom, Dick and Harry that in fact your baby is fine and can breathe can get tedious despite their concern being understandable).
