To think this is so wrong that schools rely on charity donations

This article rings so true but at the same time is really disturbing. We're constantly asked for donations from my son's school but this just seems so wrong now that children's education is reliant on fundraising and 'volunteers stepping in support the most vulnerable children.'

It is wrong, but austerity and cuts mean no other option unfortunately.

ContinuousUp · 14/08/2018 09:48

Oh please don't think I'm blaming schools as all, I agree they have no option, but I cannot believe we've allowed our education system to reach this state!

Sorry my response reads really blunt, it wasn’t aimed at you at all OP! I’m sorry.

I’m just so pissed off with the situation!

ContinuousUp · 14/08/2018 09:51

Ha YeTalk - me too! Very pissed off with it!

It’s very sad. I’m a teacher and schools have never been in a more difficult position as they are now (well during my 23 year career at least)

Our head teacher called a meeting last term asking for people to try and come up with ways to raise money. He is doing everything he can to avoid making teachers redundant but that is looking more likely.

It’s our pupils who are most affected. When we go back in sept I will have two a level classes with 25 pupils in. I used to have 15 max and could therefore give them so much more individual help and support. Their grades will undoubtably suffer as we are all so stretched.

That's what happens when people start abusing welfare systems. There are so many people putting children in state schools when they could easily afford to pay that there simply isn't enough money to go around. State schools were created to fill the gap for the 5% of children that went without any formal education at all. Obviously as standards expected in education improve one would expect a larger proportion of children to require state charity but 90% is unreasonable. There are definitely parents taking advantage. State education should be means tested. If parents who can afford to pay for education want to send their children to a state school they should pay fees which can then be evenly redistributed across state schools across the country.

Very funny racecardriver. Been reading too much infowars?

State education is available to all children and should be properly funded.

ContinuousUp · 14/08/2018 10:32

Wow racecardriver - talk about promoting a two tier system! I think most of us would like to see increased equality for something which should be a fundamental human right!

Most people can’t afford private education, especially if they have more than one child. My DP’s parents put him and his sister through private education and as a result, are both in a lot debt still to this day. There are families who on paper may be able to afford private education but in reality, it would ruin them financially. State education shouldn’t be means tested just as the NHS shouldn’t be.

It is sad but it’s indicative of a Tory government. Remember Thatcher taking the milk away? The current Tories are even worse, they’re taking pens and paper away.

It’s terrible hypocrisy to pretend to provide a service free to users (education, NHS) and then provide a threadbare service and keep asking users to pay for things that shouldn’t even be regarded as extras.
There are other ways of doing it, like making it clear, at a national level, what parents are required to pay for (and then providing a back-to-school grant for the poorest).

YeTalkShiteHen · 14/08/2018 11:35

Private education isn’t always better.

RedneckStumpy · 14/08/2018 11:47

Both the NHS and the Education system have been pushed to the absolute limit. Overpopulation and finding cuts are effectively killing them.

When the Brexit induced economic downturn hits I expect these services and more will crumble completely.
