I know Abu asking but I need help/info with bottle feeding

I know it’s not the correct place to be asking but I’m posting for traffic.

I was planning on breast feeding my ds 8 days old however due to circumstances I’m bottle feeding. He’s doing really well now 90-120 mls every 3 hours or so. No problems with making up powdered milk.
It’s the ready made stuff that’s confusing me. (Can I blame baby brain ???). If I tip 4oz in his bottle there’s still 3-4oz left in the packaged bottle. I’ve been throwing it away or giving it the dog because I don’t know if it’s safe to store in the fridge till his next feed ? But it feels like such a waste. I’m so scared I’m going to screw up his feeds and make him sick especially after reading the Aptamil stories.
Any info would be a help.

You can store it in the fridge.

Shitonthebloodything · 14/08/2018 08:48

You can store it in the fridge (coldest part not in the door shelf) and use within 24 hours. It'll be fine.

DrunkOnCalpol · 14/08/2018 08:49

Yes it's absolutely fine to save it. The big readymade bottles which are designed to give several feeds say you can keep it in the fridge for 48 hours, the small single serving bottles are exactly the same so I would have though also up to 48 hours, not that you're likely to need to keep it that long. It's only when it's in the bottle baby is drinking from that you can't keep it that long.

dementedpixie · 14/08/2018 08:50

It will say on the carton how long it can be stored in the fridge for - normally 24 hours

PicaK · 14/08/2018 08:50

For 24 hours. I was going to say look on the label - but it's just taken me all this time to find it amongst all the small print so no wonder you hadn't spotted it!

MellowMelly · 14/08/2018 08:50

What PicaK said. Perfectly fine to store in fridge for up to 24hrs.

dementedpixie · 14/08/2018 08:50

The small ones are 24 hours

PicaK · 14/08/2018 08:53

BTW you are looking after baby perfectly - congratulations on your new baby. Flowers

mayandjuniper · 14/08/2018 08:53

I would say it's fine for a couple of hours if it hasn't been heated. With a newborn though the tiny premade bottles with only about 70ml in are more appropriate, amount wise, for the amount they should be having, and even then at a week old they probably wouldn't finish it all in one go.

I'd recommend reading up on paced bottle feeding too. They don't give you much info about it in hospital but it basically just means feeding a bottle in very small amounts and then pausing and seeing if they want more, plus feeding in an upright position so the bottle has some air in the teat, which helps baby control the flow of the milk. Otherwise they just drink and drink because it's hard for them to stop, or they want to suck for comfort but are getting milk, and that can stretch out their stomachs (and supposedly be one of the reasons formula is supposed to lead to obesity). I had no idea about this and used to feed my little boy giant bottles and be completely clueless.

Lazypuppy · 14/08/2018 09:07

It says on the bottle how you can store it. Normally 24hrs in a fridge.

Sorry, not trying to be rude by i'm confused why you would take the time to post on MN insteaf of just reading the bottle, like you would with any food or drink item

cantgetadecentnewname · 14/08/2018 09:08

Thank you all for quick responses.
The label definitely isn’t clear or my brain just isn’t reading it right. I promise I’m not normally a idiot.
It’s just I wasn’t prepared for bottle feeding so I feel a bit thrown in at the deep end with it all

Lazypuppy - i think you have forgotten what brain fog is like!! Unless you are the only mum who's never left the car keys in the fridge etc etc.

anotherangel2 · 15/08/2018 18:42

If the opened milk is kept out of the fridge it be kept for 2 hours or 1 hour from when the baby starts drinking. You go by which ever if the soonest.

Neverender · 15/08/2018 18:44

It's not just you - I didn't realise there was a clipper bit on the inside of the powder lid where you can clip in the spoon until DD was about 10 months.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 15/08/2018 18:44

Maybe post the label? You can definitely keep the ready to drink stuff in the fridge for a bit.
